Mar 1, 2010I am unable to mount partition in ubuntu 10.04. Icons for different partitions are not coming within "Places". Every time I have to manually mount the partition or CD or DVD and manually unmount it. Seldom it shows the partition icons within Places>Computer. Then the partitions are getting mounted upon double clicking its partition-icon. But I fail to unmount the partition as it throws the error "media/partition_name is not in the fstab (and you are not root)."

Is there any way I can prevent it mounting when linux launches, prevent it from being mounted in linux, and (ideally) prevent it from being displayed/opened/edited at all from linux?(In case it's relevant:

Nov 15, 2010I've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"

I really liked what I saw so I used the Install ubuntu 11.04 wizard and chose the option to override the earlier version. During the 'Importing document and settings' step a pop-up entitled Failed to unmount partitions. the body stated: migration-assistant needs to mount a partition, but cannot do so because the following mount partition could not be unmounted:
/dev/sda1
The only app showing on the taskbar is the Install. this is running from the live CD.

May 1, 2011I figured I'd set up a test partition to test the waters before jumping head on to a full upgrade. I've created a new ext4 partition on my disk and marked it to be used as root for the install. Halfway through the installation an error message pops up saying it cannot unmount sda7 because it's in use, sda7 has nothing to do with the Natty install, it's the root partition of my main setup! I then aborted, rebooted and everything was fine with my main system, obviously the Natty install didn't take.

Jul 10, 2011using 'ntfs-config' to make ntfs partitions mount on bootup so that I can access my data partition from Ubuntu. The first time I installed ntfs-config it would not run. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and then it ran, but it didn't seem to be responding very well. I attempted to tick the partition I wanted and set it to be writeable. After I closed the app ALL my ntfs partitions were mounted, even the windows and system reserved partitions, and when I attempted to unmount them I got the following error:

Error unmounting: unmount exited with exit code 1:
helper failed with
unmount /dev/mapper/isw_dfjjdefcdi_RAID5p4 is not mounted (according to mtab)
I tried rebooting. I tried uninstalling ntfs-config, then reinstalling it (now it wont run again). So I'm at a loss as to what to do. I simply want my data partition mounted on boot up and writable, not the others.
Software :: Stale NFS File Error - Cannot Unmount Drive
Jan 10, 2009I have Puppy installed on an old laptop and one way or another I ended up with a file inside /usr/bin that has the Stale NFS file error. I've tried to look around for a way to fix it but all places I've looked have only been for the situation where it's on a drive you're able to unmount. At least I think they were. I certainly don't know what I'm doing well enough to know for sure. Obviously restarting the computer has been tried as well as attempting to unmount things, but I can't unmount the drive that is running the unmounting.

May 23, 2010Using Clonezilla to try to backup (as image) my partition. It gives me an error saying, "Error! No unmounted disk are found! To use clonezilla to save or clone a disk, the source disk must be unmounted! "
So I tried doing these commands: url. (2nd post down) but they didnt recognize the unmount command. Plus when I did mount to see what was mounted, i did NOT see an sda1 or anything like that. I got a bunch of other stuff. ?
Is there another command to unmount?

Jun 30, 2011I'm a total newbie in Linux, so patience I've managed to get Ubuntu up and running and love it so much I want to wipe out my Windows XP partition. (Right now I boot from startup and choose Ubuntu.)But when I open up Gparted it only shows me one "host" partition, a ntfs file system, and no reference to linux anywhere. More troubling, I cannot figure out how to "unmount" the partition. I've tried to boot from a CD unsucessfully, not sure why, but can't get the download to unzip, I think. Sorry, I said I'm a newbie.

May 19, 2011Having problems with external hard drives. I may be wrong, but I suspect they originated with an upgrade to 10.04 last Christmas. Around that time I also started using Amazon's S3 storage system, and, as a consequence, I stopped using my WD 80G external drive, previously used to backup my important files.
A week or so ago I decided to start using the WD drive again. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't happy - never caused any problems before. When I plug it in, the on-off light as the front keeps flashing on and off, and when I try to remove the drive I get the message: Error unmounting volumne An error occured while performing an operation on "My Book" (Partition 1 of WD 800BB External): The device is busy
Details: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy Assuming the device had died - it's about 5 years old - I bought a 160G Samsung S-Series drive - my but they do look neat! Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I plugged the new drive in, and it happily appeared on my desktop. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I then started to format the drive - using the default option of FAT. All went well at first, but then the format process stopped.
My new Samsung drive now seems to be operating pretty much as the WD device, I can't copy to the drive, and attempts to unmount it generate a response similar to what's happening with the WD drive. Currently, although plugged in, I can't see the drive on my desktop, although it appears under Places. However, when I try to mount the drive, I get the message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG A job is pending on /dev/sdb1

May 20, 2010I was installing opensuse 11.2 in parallel with windows xp.but during installation suddenly power has gone and after that opensuse is giving me the error message corrupt partition.i am also not able to login in xp. so I decide to reinstall windows, I got the error saying "invalid partition table" after the first restart of windows xp installation.
I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.
i have 2 window partition(1 for windows and 1 for data).i do,nt want to format 2,nd partition.
How can I installed windows?My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

I don't want to Eject it. I have a clever idea! I will add Mount Manager to the panel. Mount Manager should be called Eject Manager because that is all it does!! Even Krusader seems to have lost its ability to unmount a device.

Jan 7, 2011I am using CentOS 5.5 with kernel 2.6.18-194.26.1, 64 bit. I am unable to unmount my usb using mouse. I get the error message:
An application is preventing the volume 'XYZ' from being unmounted. No app seems to be accessing the usb. If is copy or modify some content in the usb then sometimes i can unmount it. Once when i inserted a dvd when the usb was already inserted, the usb was allowed to unmount but the dvd wasn't ! Gave me the same error message for the dvd. As root i can do a lazy unmount, but that sometimes corrupts my data.

I have inserted my handy drive. However, when I right click and select unmount I get the following message:

umount: /media/New Volume: device is busy. All I have done is copied some files to my handy drive. So I am not sure what process is keeping my handy drive busy.
Is there any command that I can use to see what process of anything else is using the handy drive?
