Ubuntu Installation :: Unmount / "Error No Unmounted Disk Are Found?
May 23, 2010
Using Clonezilla to try to backup (as image) my partition. It gives me an error saying, "Error! No unmounted disk are found! To use clonezilla to save or clone a disk, the source disk must be unmounted! "
So I tried doing these commands: url. (2nd post down) but they didnt recognize the unmount command. Plus when I did mount to see what was mounted, i did NOT see an sda1 or anything like that. I got a bunch of other stuff. ?
Is there another command to unmount?

I have two internal disks that are accessible from my ubuntu. I installed ubuntu using wubi, and those two disks are the same disks I use on Windows. One of the disks contains windows system files. These disks were easily accessible from ubuntu, I could mount/unmount anytime I wanted and had no problem with editing files. I did something I can't remember, I was just following some instruction trying to solve problem with my SD card reader. turned out it wasn't the right solution (but I fixed the SD card issue using some other instruction).

I ran the ubuntu 11.04 live CD on my laptop that had an earlier version of ubuntu (9 maybe??). I really liked what I saw so I used the Install ubuntu 11.04 wizard and chose the option to override the earlier version. During the 'Importing document and settings' step a pop-up entitled Failed to unmount partitions. the body stated: migration-assistant needs to mount a partition, but cannot do so because the following mount partition could not be unmounted:
/dev/sda1
The only app showing on the taskbar is the Install. this is running from the live CD.

I figured I'd set up a test partition to test the waters before jumping head on to a full upgrade. I've created a new ext4 partition on my disk and marked it to be used as root for the install. Halfway through the installation an error message pops up saying it cannot unmount sda7 because it's in use, sda7 has nothing to do with the Natty install, it's the root partition of my main setup! I then aborted, rebooted and everything was fine with my main system, obviously the Natty install didn't take.

I know there are many threads about recovering damaged superblocks. I've spent 3 evenings reading them and trying what they suggest. Invariably the commands do nothing except to report bad or missing superblocks. I've removed the physical disk from the machine and am working with a dd image file (/mnt/image). I can mount what used to be hdc1 and read its files with no problem. I'm trying to recover partions hdc6 and hdc7.$ mmls /mnt/image -b

As i understand, after autofs unmounts disk (network or otherwise) it keeps spinning. It costs energy, so i wonder is there any way to put hard disk to idle state after autofs timeout kicks in?

what I think will be a long post, but I want to include as much information as possible to get some help. I post my question here because it is mostly a boot issue and not strictly a server issue, although that is what I am trying to install. I bought a used server, motherboard has all IDE connectors for HD and cd/dvd. The board is am Asus cuv4x-d. It is a rather old board, introduced to market around Sept. 2000. The two IDE hard drives that came with the mobo have presented the problem as what I will describe for the SATA problem. I wanted to use my SATA-Hard Drive as my storage. I bought an SATA-to-IDE adapter. I installed the hardware and booted from the Ubuntu Server cd. Everything went fine and the installation smooth. When the initial reboot started, this is where the error comes. I get an error that says, Error: out of disk. The next line shows a grub rescue prompt. It appears that Grub can't be found. The motherboard has a Primary and Secondary IDE connection. I have tried connecting the adapter to both.

Code:

I have just bought a WD USB disk and (of course) it is formatted in NTFS and I want to reformat it to ext3. But Gparted can't unmount it, I get the info:
Unable to find mount point
Unable to read the contents of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable. The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support:
ntfsprogrs. But ntfsprogrs is already installed on my Ubuntu (Natty) system! How can I reformat that disk?

This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...
In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.
When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.
First laptop, first try:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:
Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.
Fails to boot, "insert system disk".
"use entire disk" works perfectly.
Second laptop, first try:
Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.
Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.

I'm running ubuntu from a usb currently. However, when I try to install it, it looks for the root disk on step 4 of the installation, and nothing is shown. I can't go on with the installation since I can't select a disk to install to.
I'm on an hp pavillion laptop.
By the way, windows vista is installed but won't currently boot. Don't know why. Is it probably a problem with the hard disk (the cause of both issues)

I've installed Debian 5.0.7 on a partition of my hard-disk. Before I was using Slackware, so now I have in sda1 slack 13.0 and in sda2 debian 5.The problem is that Lilo can't find the ram disk image. I tried to insert in lilo.conf file the line "initrd=/deb5/initrd.img", but it doesn't work. I tried also to create from the installation cd an initramfs file and to make the link "/deb5/initrd.img" point to it.I've used the "lilo -v" command from slackware, so in / was /dev/sda1 with slackware 13 and in /deb5 was mounted /dev/sda2 with debian 5.

After installation of debian, using the squeeze net-installer, on a HP elitebook 6930P, i get the following error. "non-system disk or disk error"
It is right after boot process, and just when it should load grub. Grub is installed in the MBR. Windows7, is installed as well, and is not an option to remove. (Should not be the problem though).
/ is set with the bootable flag.
The installation went without any issues, and I have actually tried to install twice with the exact same thing.

I would like to test 12.1 M5 on my real hardware, so I have special for this purpose two additional partitions (sda2 (to install milestone) and sda3 (to store installation ISO files)). I am running my stable 11.4 with Grub on sda1.
I do not like to burn DVDs just for short test of one milestone, so I was used to download DVD ISO, to unpack it to sda3 partition with all its files, then I changed Grub to boot install Linux from sda3. Installation complains there is no DVD or CD, then I chose to force installation from hard disk and select sda3 partition and select root directory "/". As I was used to from 11.4 this will start installation as it would be started from DVD.
But I think the problem has appeared since 12.1, where I get message: No repository found. (on sda3 / ), so the installation does not start.
I know this is not official way to install openSuse, but it worked before, and it was fast and easy for me, to install from hard disk.

i finally decided to updgrade from Hardy Heron to Lucid Lynx. for this i made a backup of my old install, then i couldnt find my Lucid CD so i used a Karmic one to partition my old ext3 to ext4. There were some errors but after trying a few times it worked. Installed Karmic, rebooted (worked fine), downloaded all updates - (did NOT reboot to let updates take effect) and upgraded to Lucid.
Everything went fine so far. Now when i try to boot into Lucid the system hangs, i've also got a windowsXP partition on there so i tried booting that, first grub tells me Error 29: Disk write error then trying again windows seems to boot but it takes much longer than it should and seems to hang.
Then i tried Karmic and Lucid LiveCD (which i found in the meantime) none of the LiveCDs make it to boot after about 20 minutes. (previously they worked fine)looking at the errors it seems to be something about the harddrive. Why the harddrive would stop the LiveCD booting is a mystery to me but the same messages appear when i select Recovery from the Grub menu so i guess the problem is related.

using 'ntfs-config' to make ntfs partitions mount on bootup so that I can access my data partition from Ubuntu. The first time I installed ntfs-config it would not run. I uninstalled and reinstalled it and then it ran, but it didn't seem to be responding very well. I attempted to tick the partition I wanted and set it to be writeable. After I closed the app ALL my ntfs partitions were mounted, even the windows and system reserved partitions, and when I attempted to unmount them I got the following error:
Unable to unmount Data
Error unmounting: unmount exited with exit code 1:
helper failed with
unmount /dev/mapper/isw_dfjjdefcdi_RAID5p4 is not mounted (according to mtab)
I tried rebooting. I tried uninstalling ntfs-config, then reinstalling it (now it wont run again). So I'm at a loss as to what to do. I simply want my data partition mounted on boot up and writable, not the others.

I have recently installed debian jessie on my laptop , during installation i didn't mount 2 of my partitions , now when i want to access them i have to give the root password every time i click on them , i searched the google , i found that i have to add a line in fstab file : so i i checked the partition that i wanted to mount (by typing fdisk -l) , and i added this line to the end of the fstab file :
Code: Select all/dev/sda3 /mnt/2 ext4 users,noatime,auto,rw,nodev,exec,nosuid 0 0
(i had created /mnt/2 before ) ..... and this is the output of fdisk -l :
Code: Select allDisk /dev/sda: 465.8 GiB, 500107862016 bytes, 976773168 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x4a373773
[Code] .....
After adding the line at the end of my fstab file , something strange happened , i rebooted the computer and mate didn't come up , it was a console like screen , i had to access fstab from there to delete the line and enter mate . i did this for 2 times and both times the same thing happened . How can I mount my partition permanently ?

I'm trying to install Fedora for the first time on my Desktop. Unfortunately, upon restart once the installation is complete I get the following error:
Code:
This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

I have Puppy installed on an old laptop and one way or another I ended up with a file inside /usr/bin that has the Stale NFS file error. I've tried to look around for a way to fix it but all places I've looked have only been for the situation where it's on a drive you're able to unmount. At least I think they were. I certainly don't know what I'm doing well enough to know for sure. Obviously restarting the computer has been tried as well as attempting to unmount things, but I can't unmount the drive that is running the unmounting.
