I am very new to ubuntu/linux so dont really know what these files are. i know they are some sort of compression file, thats about it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI performed an install using the 5.0.6 amd64 netinst cd on a dual opteron server with an Areca ARC-1110 4-port SATA hardware RAID card. I have 2 250GB drives set up as RAID 1. The debian install saw it as only one drive, just as it should. Install went smoothly, but on reboot, the system would not load.
I did some research and tried a couple of things with no luck. Like adding a delay in the grub command. It jus sits at loading system for a while then times out and loads busy box. Just to check things out, I booted into an Ubuntu live-cd and mounted the volume. The file system is there and all of the necessary files. How to use one of these cards successfully?

The most recent update that produced the kernel version above is bit of a disaster for me. The open source radeon driver does not work with VirtualBox (it crashes at startup), and the ATI fglrx driver either builds without acceleration (or the X server loads it that way?) or fails to build.
Is there a way to undo some (or all, if necessary) of the update?
I just used dd to clone a linux partition to a new hard drive, it had 800mb left on the old hard drive, after dd, new hard drive lists 1.29/1.3 terabytes full. Is this what happens by default in dd? How can I fix this?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

I really liked what I saw so I used the Install ubuntu 11.04 wizard and chose the option to override the earlier version. During the 'Importing document and settings' step a pop-up entitled Failed to unmount partitions. the body stated: migration-assistant needs to mount a partition, but cannot do so because the following mount partition could not be unmounted:
/dev/sda1
The only app showing on the taskbar is the Install. this is running from the live CD.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to install ubuntu 10.10 onto an HP laptop and could not get anything to boot apart from windows vista. When I entered the boot options and selected CD to try and load the ubuntu CD it just booted off the HDD repeatedly. I removed (foolishly perhaps) the HDD and formatted it on my other machine, then created a start-up disk for ubuntu on it. I re-installed the hard drive and loaded ubuntu with no problems, but I can't install it. What do I need to do to the HDD (partitions, flags, etc) to make it so I can boot the iso from one part of the drive and install on the other?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've done a search thru the forums on a recent headache but couldn't find anything. now we all know that windows installations knackers the grub boot-up, and it becomes modus-operandi to repair the boot loader, with a live distro. however, in my current dual boot system (vista.sp2/fedora12), i've done a clean install of windows7 over the current windows ntfs partition. as standard, the boot menu would vanish. but when i put in the live-linux cd, gparted now shows the fedora partition (sda6) as LVM2. i'm somewhat of a neophyte with linux, but fedora12, suse11.2 and ubuntu don't seem to yet support this file system. since i don't have critical data on the fedora partition yet, i usually wouldn't mind reformating this part', but the wireless chipset on my laptop cost a fortune on cups of coffee and beer to install, and in addition i used the fedora12 FEL spin and want to keep the installation intact. is there anyway to make the LVM2 indentifier back to ext3 or 4 and repair grub form there (without loosing the current partition kernal etc.)?
View 2 Replies View Relatedthe normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?

View 14 Replies View RelatedAttempting install of 11.3 on previous 11.2 dual windows boot box. I want to format the Linux parts including /Home and retain the Win / NTFS part. (dual boot) Peculiar behavior of install DVD. Here is fdisk -l that clearly indicates a 500 GB HD and the Win partition, extended partition and the 3 basic Linux partitions and they seem okay in total.

I aborted the installation. What could possibly cause the 11.2 parts and bootloader to get this wacked up ? Outside of some sound issues the 11.2 install works okay for the most part. No crashing or lockups. Really want to get up to 11.3. though. I obviously have some work to do with 35 GB of missing space on the HD and Grub living someplace on the wrong side of the river. Suggestions and a pointer or two would be most welcome guys. ( I really don't want the pain of installing that �other� OP system or I'd reformat and reinstall nice and clean.) Do I need to repartition, change mount points and reinstall Grub maybe.
I just today installed OpenSUSE 11.0 on an empty drive I had (320GB) and I had Ubuntu 10.04 on another 500 GB drive, and I have now lost my GRUB menu.

windows 7 and ubuntu netbook edition 10.04. I installed windows xp after running these two OS' for a while to try and fix an issue I had with video playback. However, when I run the pc now it boots straight into xp. I have read the forums about reinstalling grub. However, the first command in the grub shell that locates the HDD doesn't work . Which means the other commands don't work
I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?
i've just migrated my desktop machine to Ubuntu 10.04. My problem is that i've purged a package and can't install this package back. Because I can't see it in the aptitude or apt-get's package list. I think I have play with some configurations. How can i fix this issue?
Edit: The problematic packages are sun-java6* . I installed sun-java6-jdk from oracle's web page and installed other ones using APT.
I need is to retain an entry in GRUB2 for a second disk, which has it's own GRUB2, which I want to keep intact, and not have removed when re-installing the GRUB2 on the 1st disk...
View 1 Replies View RelatedI hate using Software Center. I can't pick more than one program to install at one time. It downloads only one program at a time.The downloads take longer. I'm not able to look at all available programs at once. It doesn't categorise the programs on the sidebar, but instead you have to use another icon window. Gnome-app-install was just easer to use. Anyone else feel this way?
Following lines taken from other replies in this post to make it easier to do:
-You can install gnome-app-install from this ppa repo.
-Update the repository (including the new PPA):
sudo apt-get update
-Install the gnome application installer:

I just did a fresh install from 8.04 to 10.04 with separate "/" and /home partitions. I really wanted a new 10.04 system to start from scratch and rebuild it again & differently. Instead I got a really messed up system. Is there any way to change it to a fresh new 10.04 install. That nothing has been added to yet?
This is very important because on 10.04 my video card won't handle all the mods that I had on 8.04 and my system freezes very soon after I log on.
I intended to upgrade to fedora 15 but my old laptop only has 512mb so I have to stick with 14 (which is good anyway). I did this at the command line on the way the upgrade:

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a system with SUSE 11.2/11.1 and windows 2000 on it. Before i put Ubuntu on i was using the GRUB with 11.2. Now, i am using ubuntu grub. Is there any way to install GRUB from 11.2 back into the MBR.

I have loaded 9.10 ( 64 bit ) under VMWare Workstation 6.5 and each new install results in fast audio ( mp3 ) and video ( avi, mpg, etc ) playback. I am trying to keep the installs as vanilla as possible. My other VM distros are fine.
I am creating the VMs under vista x64, SP1 ( now updated to SP2 ), using workstation 6.5 ( will upgrade to 7 later on ).
