I would like to install Ubuntu 10 on my Thinkpad T400, but would like feedback from other T400 users that have Ubuntu running on their laptops. First, will it recognize all my hardware? I hear most Thinkpad users had issues with video and webcam drivers, but that was with an earlier version of Ubuntu 8 through 9. So my plan is to have Ubuntu 10 as my primary OS on the T400 and use Win7 within VMware.
View 7 RepliesI have a TP T400 and wanted to use a bit of Linux. Installed Ubuntu 10.04 in my notebook using Virtualbox. The problem is that it doesn't recognizes the video chipset, which is a X4500 integrated graphics. After booting I receive an error msg saying that my video is not recognized and asks if I want to fix it. Dunno how to do that, so I cancel. After that I can only use 800x600, wanted widescreen (1440x900). Is there a simple way to fix it? Liked Ubuntu, wanted to use it.

My problem is that the plasmoid-network manager shows that I am connected to my wireless network (with SSID "Fatty"), but I can't get onto the web. Browser, chat application, twitter client - nothing is able to connect. Followed the instructions given by the stickies at the top of this forum. Here is what I got.

I have a Thinkpad T400 running FC11 and am using integrated (intel) graphics, because I know FC11 doesn't have 3-D acceleration support for the ATI Radeon Mobility 3470. I take this to be because the 2.6.29 kernel and the X Server release were too new, and unsupported. I know from phoronix that 2.6.29 is now in fact supported with the advent of 9.8, and that I believe my X server is supported too.
As far as I can tell, this means I **should** be able to use fglrx..I was wondering how one backed up their X configuration on Fedora, as it doesn't really use xorg.conf very much. I was also wondering how to reconfigure X for a completely new graphics card with a completely new driver, without reinstalling. That is, quite simply, out of the question for me, as I've made many customizations to Fedora, and I don't have the time to back them up and restore them.
My laptop has a very high consumption when running on idle (I mean nothing that write on the disk or video etc..). I read on lenovo forums that people could get 10-12W and I can hardly get lower than 20W. My cpufreq is set to powersave and my cpus are always at the lowest scale.
configure my laptop to save some power. It used to last almost 7h on battery (sadly I don't remember the consumption) on Ubuntu and now it can barely last more than 3h with slackware.

I've just successfully updated a Thinkpad T400 from 5.5 to 5.6 with no problems.In fact, the wireless led indicator now works, which is kind of neat. What's annoying is that it blinks whenever there is network traffic.Perhaps I'll get used to it, but if I can just make it "on" when the network is on and "off" when the network is off, that would be better.Googling turns up this issue on ubuntu and other distros in the past year or so, and the recommended fix was to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlcore.conf
options iwlcore led_mode=1
I did this, unloaded and reloaded the kernel modules, but to no avail. Output was:

This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. I have both pigeon and empathy working on my laptop, and can chat in both, but i have been wanting to activate my video for both, but apparently it doesn't recognize my webcam. It seems strange as i have skype working perfectly on my system, and can use the video option in it without any problem, so it cant be that my webcam isnt recognized. does anyone know how i can get my webcam working in either or both of these instant messengering services.

I downloaded the 64bit iso and burned it to a thumb-drive, just before booting the thumb-drive. I have not yet installed Ubuntu, but rather I'm still running it from a thumb-drive. I want to make sure everything will work fine, before installing it permanently.
However, it doesn't appear as if any drivers for my wireless card were loaded, as I can't view the available wireless networks. I successfully installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my desktop several months ago and I haven't booted into Windows since, -not one time. Therefore, I'm hoping to have my new laptop run Ubuntu as well.
video playback is like I have applied a blueish sepia filter over it. And this is just the playback from totem player or mplayer, and not the playback from ..... (and generally online streaming) - this works just fine. this messy video playback also appears when I use cheese to capture video with my webcam. Note that the preview picture of the video file on nautilus has the natural colours it should have.

It seems the latest nvidia drivers (255.44) don't seem to work on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 in Lucid. Has anybody gotten it to work? I've tried to just use the System -> Drivers control panel to install and activate the current nvidia drivers as well as installing it from the command line. However, when I reboot, I see the nvidia splash screen come up for a second, then the screen goes blank, and then the nvidia splash screen pops up again, and then the screen goes blank again, over and over. It seems to be in some kind of infinite initialization loop. My T61 has the nvidia NVS 140m chipset. This is frustrating since the previous drivers seemed to work ok. When I try to revert to older drivers, it complains now that they're no longer compatible with the latest kernel headers, etc. I've had to boot up into the failsafe graphics mode to be able to use the laptop.

View 2 Replies View Relatedafter a recent foray into Ubuntu. Every day is a school day at the moment, so please be gentle! I recently obtained an old IBM Thinkpad T41 which I've made dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu (windows was my backup option - it's installed but with none of the drivers; thankfully I've not yet hit a problem Ubuntu can't handle!) and which is connected up to the TV in our lounge. I have installed XBMC on it, and we're currently enjoying having access to all sorts of multi-media and iPlayer in the lounge. The thinkpad connects to our home network wirelessly, using the Thinkpad's built in wireless hardware - providing a whopping 11Mbps connection. Our media is all stored on NAS on the network, and I thought that even full 54Mbps wireless would not be fast enough to stream videos smoothly onto another machine.
However we have two windows laptops (one windows 7, one windows xp) which have 54Mbps connections and they can stream the videos smoothly from the NAS, so clearly I was wrong (wer'e not talking High def or blue ray rips here or anything). So my first question. Does anyone have an recommendations of a 54Mbps wireless card (PCMCIA preferably) that is compatible with both Ubuntu and the Thinkpad so that I can improve it's connection speed to the network? I have a "Max Value" branded card in the windows xp laptop (bought cheaply from Amazon) that I tried to but failed miserably to get working in the Thinkpad with Ubuntu last night. All hints and tips welcome....
Second question: Improving video playback on the thinkpad. Some of the videos were a bit choppy, which I thought was just to do with video quality. However having been playing them on the windows xp laptop - Sony Vaio PCG-FR215S, so similar in age and processor speed to the thinkpad - they play absolutely perfectly. So what are my options for improving the video playback on the Thinkpad running Ubuntu? - Upgrade memory to 1GB from 512MB? Will this make much difference? The sony has been upgraded to 1GB, which is why I ask the question. Do I have any options on the dedicated graphics processing hardware front? I'm guessing they are severely restricted as it's a laptop, but thought I'd ask as obviously I'd only be interested in something that is supported by Ubuntu.
Nvidia acceleration is enabled in Ubuntu, and in XBMC. The playback quality in XBMC is comparable with using VLC so I don't think there is anything XBMC specific to be concerned with at the moment.
I just received my laptop this week and have been tweaking my laptop to acquire more stability. I just installed the NVIDIA proprietary drivers for the NVS 3100M chipset and I have a residual windows that wont disappear even after reboot. Even after reinstalling the NVIDIA driver it stays. Is there some way to flush the framebuffer?

when I start up ubuntu (10.10) and reach the desktop, the screen is messed up. The center of the screen becomes blurry, and it looks like what is normally the right part of the screen is duplicated in the middle of the screen (with what should be the middle of the screen disappearing).
I think its an ATI video card, and I tried to install different driver from Softwarecenter but no succes.I know the screen is working, because when I boot forinstance, the Ibm logo is showed nicely across the screen. So its not a hardware issue. Another thing, I got puppy linux to work correctly after having the same grapphic issues on that OS when I first installed it. But some how I managed to get the right drivers. But as I like ubuntu more, I would appriciate your help with figuring this out
ps. when I try to setup screen resolution in System>Settings>"resolution", Ubuntu says "unknown display" (marked with red color).
I installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.

I followed the instructions on Ubuntu Documentation > Community Documentation > Ov51x (sorry but I can't post links) but I'm having trouble with preparing the installation files with the "make" command.

I've loaded Fedora and must say what a nice OS! But I'm having some issues getting the video working correctly so let me jump right into the issue. The video is very garbled and hard to read. can't seem to find a way to correct what would appear to be a driver issue. Here are a list of things tried:
- display works fine with Ubuntu
- display is clear but is chopped off when using an external monitor from onboard vga slot
The video card is an ATI radeon and the linux drivers from the ATI site don't work with the new images that are out yet.
How do I check what video driver I have installed in the terminal? Then how do I install or yum install it? I wanna do everything through command line soz.. I have an ATI 4850 I believe.
