I'm reasonable at sorting out problems in windows but this OS seems like you really have to be a computer wizard. Am I out of my depth using this? or am I just missing the obvious.

Ubuntu Installation :: ThinkPad T400 - Video And Webcam Drivers

Dec 30, 2010

I would like to install Ubuntu 10 on my Thinkpad T400, but would like feedback from other T400 users that have Ubuntu running on their laptops. First, will it recognize all my hardware? I hear most Thinkpad users had issues with video and webcam drivers, but that was with an earlier version of Ubuntu 8 through 9. So my plan is to have Ubuntu 10 as my primary OS on the T400 and use Win7 within VMware.

I followed the instructions on Ubuntu Documentation > Community Documentation > Ov51x (sorry but I can't post links) but I'm having trouble with preparing the installation files with the "make" command.

This is the message I keep getting:

(See attached picture)

Also, as an aside, I often get the message when I'm trying to install a package that it is "Unable to locate pack ______".

Installation :: Live Disks Won't Install Drivers Or Install?

Feb 19, 2009

So far I've tried gOS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and SuZE. The result is the same: The live disk runs, opens up but the graphics are shoddy, sound doesn't work, everything is very slow, and in attempting to partition and install the os, it stays at "Resizing partitions 0%"I know Live disks are going to be a bit slower, but this is super slow and this computer is just a few months old. Usually the live cds have a database of drivers for common media but it just isn't accelerating the graphics or even recognizing my wireless. I know its not the CDs because they work fine on other (much older) computers.

Ubuntu Installation :: Way To Install Proprietory Drivers That Came With Monitor?

Jan 7, 2010

I recently bought myself a 22" widescreen LG monitor and am running Ubuntu 8.10 with it. Trouble is when I set the screen resolution to 1920*1080 which is the actual resolution of the monitor it shrinks the text and web pages to miniscule proportions.Text becomes tiny and web pages with firefox display as a column occupying about a third of the screen.I have to decrease the resolution to 1024*768 which makes web pages display better (at least they take up the whole screen)

Is there some way to install the proprietory drivers that came with the monitor? They are an .inf file on the supplied disc.I have a Nividia graphics card a GE Force FX 5200.I also have the 173.14.12 Nividia driver installed if this means anything to anyone.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Properly Install NVidia Drivers On 10.04

Oct 8, 2010

Being a total beginner to linux, I can't seem to find a decent guide on how to install these drivers without much hassle, even though I've been searching for almost couple of hours now.

First, my system specs, taken with Hard Info
Processor: 2x AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 240 Processor
Memory: 3091MB (1865MB used)
Operating System: Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS

-Display-
Resolution: 1360x768 pixels
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GT 220/PCI/SSE2
X11 Vendor: The X.Org Foundation

-Multimedia-
Audio Adapter: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
Audio Adapter: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia

-SCSI Disks-
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS50

Now, I've installed the "default" (dunno if that would be the correct categorizing) driver with the "Hardware drivers" utility from System->Preferences->Hardware drivers because I've failed numerous times trying to install the package from nVidia site ; I would always get an error while trying to run the package :
"It seems that X server is running on your linux, please deactivate it to install this package" or something like that, but I'm sure it was about X running.

Ubuntu Installation :: Add LSI Drivers For 9750 RAID Controller During Install

Sep 1, 2010

I need to add the LSI drivers for the 9750 RAID controller during the install. These drivers are not included in 10.04 (or 10.04.1) and I need to install onto the RAID device I've created. LSI provides the drivers and instructions here - [URL]

Here are my steps, with the drivers on a USB drive -
Code:
Boot from the installation CD and select Install Ubuntu Server.
Press CTRL+ALT+F2 to switch to console 2 while Ubuntu detects the network.
# mkdir /mnt2 /3ware
# mount /dev/sda1 /mnt2
NOTE: LSI drivers are at /dev/sda1, via USB
# cp /mnt2/9750-server.tgz /3ware
# cd /3ware ; tar zxvf 9750-server.tgz
# umount /mnt2

* Remove the USB flash before insmod command *
# insmod /3ware/2.6.32-21-generic/3w-sas.ko

Press CTRL+ALT+F1 to return to the installer. Continue the installation as usual. Do not reboot when the installation is complete. Press CTRL+ALT+F2 to switch to console 2 again.

# cp /3ware/2.6.32-21-server/3w-sas.ko /target/lib/modules/2.6.32-21-server/kernel/drivers/scsi
# chroot /target
# /sbin/depmod -a 2.6.32-21-server
# update-initramfs -u -v
# exit

Press CTRL+ALT+F1 to return to the installer. Reboot to complete the installation. There are no errors, but after I reboot I just get "GRUB" in the upper left corner, nothing else.

Fedora Installation :: No Drivers Found With New F12 Install

I have an SATA drive installed as my primary disk. I have not been able to install any version since F9 so I thought I should finally try to nail down what is going on.
