Slackware :: High Consumption On Idle With A Thinkpad T400?

Oct 29, 2010

My laptop has a very high consumption when running on idle (I mean nothing that write on the disk or video etc..). I read on lenovo forums that people could get 10-12W and I can hardly get lower than 20W. My cpufreq is set to powersave and my cpus are always at the lowest scale.

configure my laptop to save some power. It used to last almost 7h on battery (sadly I don't remember the consumption) on Ubuntu and now it can barely last more than 3h with slackware.

My config is:
T400 intel duo core 3,06ghz
14.1" TFT display with 1440x900 (WXGA+) resolution with LED backlight
Switchable Graphics with Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 (256 MB)
320GB 7200rpm 2.5" SATA HDD
Intel Wifi Link 5300 (AGN)
9 cells battery

My problem is that the plasmoid-network manager shows that I am connected to my wireless network (with SSID "Fatty"), but I can't get onto the web. Browser, chat application, twitter client - nothing is able to connect. Followed the instructions given by the stickies at the top of this forum. Here is what I got.

Hardware :: Thinkpad T400 Graphics Cards And Fglrx 9.8

Aug 18, 2009

I have a Thinkpad T400 running FC11 and am using integrated (intel) graphics, because I know FC11 doesn't have 3-D acceleration support for the ATI Radeon Mobility 3470. I take this to be because the 2.6.29 kernel and the X Server release were too new, and unsupported. I know from phoronix that 2.6.29 is now in fact supported with the advent of 9.8, and that I believe my X server is supported too.

As far as I can tell, this means I **should** be able to use fglrx..I was wondering how one backed up their X configuration on Fedora, as it doesn't really use xorg.conf very much. I was also wondering how to reconfigure X for a completely new graphics card with a completely new driver, without reinstalling. That is, quite simply, out of the question for me, as I've made many customizations to Fedora, and I don't have the time to back them up and restore them.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: 5.6, Iwlcore, Blinking Led On A Thinkpad T400?

Apr 9, 2011

I've just successfully updated a Thinkpad T400 from 5.5 to 5.6 with no problems. In fact, the wireless led indicator now works, which is kind of neat. What's annoying is that it blinks whenever there is network traffic.Perhaps I'll get used to it, but if I can just make it "on" when the network is on and "off" when the network is off, that would be better.Googling turns up this issue on ubuntu and other distros in the past year or so, and the recommended fix was to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlcore.conf

options iwlcore led_mode=1

I did this, unloaded and reloaded the kernel modules, but to no avail. Output was:

[cbender@kauai modprobe.d]# rmmod iwlagn
[cbender@kauai modprobe.d]# rmmod iwlcore
[cbender@kauai modprobe.d]# modprobe iwlagn[code].........

Ubuntu Installation :: Thinkpad T400 Video - Intel Chipset Only

Jun 18, 2010

I have a TP T400 and wanted to use a bit of Linux. Installed Ubuntu 10.04 in my notebook using Virtualbox. The problem is that it doesn't recognizes the video chipset, which is a X4500 integrated graphics. After booting I receive an error msg saying that my video is not recognized and asks if I want to fix it. Dunno how to do that, so I cancel. After that I can only use 800x600, wanted widescreen (1440x900). Is there a simple way to fix it? Liked Ubuntu, wanted to use it.

Ubuntu Installation :: ThinkPad T400 - Video And Webcam Drivers

Dec 30, 2010

I would like to install Ubuntu 10 on my Thinkpad T400, but would like feedback from other T400 users that have Ubuntu running on their laptops. First, will it recognize all my hardware? I hear most Thinkpad users had issues with video and webcam drivers, but that was with an earlier version of Ubuntu 8 through 9. So my plan is to have Ubuntu 10 as my primary OS on the T400 and use Win7 within VMware.

Ubuntu :: 10.04: High Load Average At Idle

May 5, 2010

Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, my system is noticeably less responsive and exhibits halting behavior for at times 10s of seconds. There is nothing obvious in the various logs that I can find. The only objective indication I can find that demonstrates that something is seriously wrong is that my load average never drops below 0.5 and is often over 1.5, even at idle. In this situation, top/ps/whatever shows very few processes running (usually just top). This suggests to me that either the new kernel scheduler is horrible or that something new is resulting in blocking I/O or other uninterruptable sleeps.Typical top output:

Quote:

top - 12:18:01 up 1 day, 49 min, 5 users, load average: 1.42, 0.86, 0.71
Tasks: 262 total, 1 running, 261 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.9%us, 0.8%sy, 0.0%ni, 97.6%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.7%si, 0.0%st

Ubuntu Servers :: High Load Average But Idle CPU?

Nov 26, 2010

I am having a problem with the server that I use to host my personal site. The load average quite often spikes to exceed 1.00 for the 1 and 5 minute intervals, and the 15 minute interval gets above .5. This occurs while the server is idle, serving very few or no requests and with the CPU 99% idle with <1% IOWAIT usage. I have checked top and vmstat, but neither one provides any useful info. Top continues to say the CPU is 99% idle, and vmstat says that there are 0 runnable and 0 blocking tasks. Occasionally, vmstat will say that there is 1 runnable task, but this doesn't even coincide with the load average spikes. I have already searched for other solutions to this problem, but everything I have seen says to use top and/or vmstat, but those aren't showing anything out of the ordinary. Can anyone recommend anything else I might do?

My server has a Pentium 4 HT 3gHz processor, 2GB RAM, and runs Kubuntu 10.10. (The reason it runs Kubuntu instead of Ubuntu Server is that it needs an X environment so that the Nvidia driver can initialize and put its graphics card into a power saving mode.)

Slackware :: After Some Idle Time It Hangs /freezes

Jun 6, 2011

After some idle time Slackware hangs up/freezes. When, for an example, i turn on music i can hear it on idle time but after some time music still plays but i'm losing picture (monitor detects no signal), num lock is locked, led on keyboard are turned on but won't turn off while pressing num lock. I've switched off power saving options in Slackware and on bios setup.

My spec is:

X4 620 (without overclocking)
AMD 760G (Radeon HD 3000)
Catalyst 11.5 for Radeon graphic.

BTW - computer works fine with Windows. Also, with Slackware i can work for an hours, many hours and everything is fine but as soon as i leave it for some amount of time = it hangs/freezes. There is something wrong with hibernation. Not always computern is turned off correctly. TV is switched off, slackware logged off but i hear drives working and cooler fans. It should be switched off completly.

Slackware :: Cannot Suspend And Resume - ThinkPad Edge 13 (AMD-ATI)

Jan 19, 2011

Slackware 13.1 installed clean on a new ThinkPad Edge (version 13 inch with AMD Processor and ATI graphics). I can get most of what I want working fine except for suspend and resume. I read somewhere that I should be using generic rather than huge kernel, so I have done that and scrapped ATI proprietary driver in case that was causing problems, but nothing so far has allowed me to suspend and resume with pm-suspend, acpitool suspend or with KDE suspend command. In all cases the screen blanks and the single ThinkPad red LED goes from on to blinking, but nothing seems to wake the machine up again. I had both suspend and hibernate working fine with Slack 13.1 on an older Lenovo laptop and ubuntu users report on their forums that this laptop does suspend and resume "out of the box" so I feel it must be possible.

Slackware :: Enabling Sleep / Hibernate - Buttons On Thinkpad X32 (13.1)

Jul 26, 2010

I have some problems getting some of the buttons on my Thinkpad working properly. Volume buttons, thinklight, etc. work through tpb. It's the other buttons (sleep, hibernate, etc.) that are causing problems. The wireless radio button also works. I can hibernate and suspend successfully from the command-line using pm-suspend, etc. I have copied the 30-keymap-module-thinkpad-acpi.fdi file to /etc/hal/fdi/policy, where it sits alongside my UK keyboard layout policy (10-keymap.fdi). In this file, I have edited the 'radio' button to call a 'bluetooth' event instead, but it seems to be ignored and pressing Fn+F5 toggles both bluetooth and wlan radios and not just bluetooth... Is there something I have to do to merge the 2 files together? Or do I have to rename the thinkpad .fdi file so I have 10-keymap.fdi and 30-keymap.fdi?

I have the tpb daemon running but it's set not to block keystrokes and when I run xev and press the key combination for sleep, it reports 'xf86sleep' correctly, hibernate reports 'xf86suspend', etc., so I know the keys are getting recognized in some form... However, it seems that the HAL daemon is not picking up these events and running the corresponding commands. I am a member of the 'power' group, nevertheless, even running as root does not seem to make any difference. Finally, I am running wmii as a windowmanager with no desktop environment, and none of these buttons is configured in the window manager. hald should be picking up the events but it seems it isn't

Slackware :: Choose Between The Lenovo Thinkpad W500 And The Older T61p?

Jul 9, 2010

I'm trying to choose between the Lenovo Thinkpad W500 and the older T61p. The W500 is said to have a higher quality display than the T61p, however there seem to be more problems with running Linux on it. One of the reasons for this is the fact that it has switchable graphics, with one of the GPUs being an ATI FireGL. The older T61p comes with Nvidia Quadro FX only, which as we know is more Linux-friendly.

Which model should I choose? Will certain issues such as being able to suspend / resume be cleared up with newer kernel releases?

Slackware :: Thinkpad T500 Fan Control - Way To Control ?

Jun 2, 2010

I have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.

My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?

The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.

So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

I am running slackware-current x86_64 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T500.
