Apr 3, 2010I'm using 9.10 on acer aspire one (not the netbook remix).im using the default messanger client empathy.everything else works fine but when i try to video chat the video chat begins but if the other person even moves a litte or even nods his head then the video becomes so choppy that u cant see anything and then after 5 min comes back to normal for a second or two.i have all the latest updates and gstreamer0.10-ugly-multiverse which is required for video chat b/w empathy and gtalk.

However, when I establish a connection on aMSN or Skype, the other person only sees a white screen instead of my face. (I've already installed farsight2)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: How To Create Video Chat App
Jan 11, 2010I have been tasked with the job of finding a way to create a video chat application on Linux to use with our health software. We are basically just wanting to add a video / audio component to the system. I have been using Ubuntu a long time and have decided to use it as our platform for the new software. We currently use Emblaze VCON with our software on Windows and I want to eliminate the need for Windows completely. We supply the hardware so if I can get good quality video chat integrated into our software then I am all set.
I have been playing with some apps like vlc, cheese and luvcview. I am quite impressed with the video quality I am getting so I know Linux can give our users a great chat experience. I even tried Skype 2.0 beta and that worked great too.
I see the software working just like Yahoo or MSN does. I provide a list of users and whether they are online and when you double click on their name they get a ring and prompt to accept the incoming call from "Joe". If there is an engine already in place that we are free to use and bundle with our paid product then that would be great. I am really ignorant on GPL licensing so I want to be careful on what we do. Also, I think this method is best for the connection... I like the idea of a server which receives input from all clients and tracks their online status but when you make a call to the other person it communicates p2p style to minimize hops and server load. We will be controlling the firewalls on the hardware but not what this hardware may be behind, ie. Router - so I guess I need something that can tunnel through / around such obstacles.
I would really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction on what I could use to do this and also not have to worry about licensing and Intellectual property violations. Btw, I don't see the need to modify the software if it can handle the p2p chat out of box and do it well. I will write the components to handle online / offline status if the "engine" doesn't handle this.

Sep 5, 2010I'm running 9.04, and wanted to use GMail's talk and video features. Registered with Gmail, and had to install a deb called google-talkplugin_current_i386.deb , and after installation, Gmail appeared as if it was ready/ok for a chat, talk or video.
Then I noticed the .deb was not shown under Synaptic, as a 'standard' deb, so in the interests of some 3rd party software NOT running on the computer, uninstalled it.
Went looking in Synaptic, and it does have a 'gtalk'. Is that all that is required, to run talk or video under a web browser, after logging into my GMail account ? Or, should I use Empathy ?

Jun 17, 2010When Lucid Lynx came out I did a clean install on my laptop by burning an iso. Unfortunately, I got an annoying bug in which the image would always be wiggly (wavy) in the external monitor. In an attempt to fix the issue, I tried to installed Ati's restricted drivers. Unfortunately, my graphics card (Radeon x1200) isn't supported by them on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install it anyway only made things worse.
Right now, I just want it to be back to what it was when I first installed Lucid. Following the instructions on this page, I have already removed the fglrx drivers, and I think I installed the open-source driver. However, I can tell that things are not the way they were when I first installed. By going in "Main menu > System > Preferences > Monitors" I get the usual menu to configure the monitors, except I can't actually configure anything.
There's only one monitor (listed as Unknown), and the system doesn't let me change any of the settings (such as resolution or frequency). The external monitor is showing the same output as the laptop monitor, and doesn't get recognized by the system. I just want to use the exact graphics drivers that came installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But I don't want to do a clean install.

Oct 15, 2010uestion by saying that I don't know anything about how video drivers work under Ubuntu or Linux in general.My situation is as follows: I have installed Ubuntu on a portable hard drive for use on multiple computers, so as such, I chose not to install drivers for a specific video card as I can't be sure of the hardware of the computers I will be using it on. Everything was working fine, but while setting some wine games up, I have managed to "break" my video drivers/video config so now some games give me an error. I have been told that the quickest way to get rid of this error is to reinstall video drivers, but I am lost, as I can't find out what drivers, if any, I have installed. So my question is: how could I go about resetting the configuration and generic drivers that came with the Lucid?

1. Download and install from AMD catalyst = fail. keep getting error 454 Bad Substitution.
2. Try "Additional Drivers" = nothing here.
3. Try "Synaptic Package Manager" search "fglrx" find one that looks right, let it install dependencies = fail. (maybe this is where I should be?)
4. Try this guide, however its a bit outdated. Get stuck on the repositories .deb files.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: ATI Video Drivers Gone Bonkers After Upgrade?
Feb 16, 2011My drivers are not working right, I removed the ati drivers from synaptic to stop a stuttering screen problem I had, worked fine...rebooted reinstalled them rebooted and the problem came back after I reinstalled them. So now I've removed them again but I have not removed the Fire GL driver, on 10.04 I had stuttering screen and let the system find the driver then everything was fine.
Can I do that again, will 10.10 have the Fire GL driver if I let the system find it again?

Jan 4, 2010 For those of us who were stung last year by ATI's decision to drop support for <= R500 series cards from their closed source, or proprietary driver (known as the FGLRX driver), we are now forced to use the opensource ATI XORG driver. This is not as bad as it sounds, as in doing so, ATI has released a lot of the hardware specs on these older cards and the opensource driver has improved dramatically in the last year as a result.
Ubuntu includes both the ATI and the FGLRX driver install capacities in recent releases (since Intrepid(?)). If one can install the FGLRX driver, you should be able to do this by choosing System>Administration>Hardware Drivers and choosing to activate the ATI drivers; or you can manually install them using this guide: [URL]
However, if you have a card that is or below the R500 series (i.e. not R600+) DO NOT install the FGLRX drivers - you will break your X server (video display). If you don't know what series chipset you have, try the following:

These are fairly easy to remove (as described on the site); just remove the PPA from your Software Sources and downgrade the drivers.

Apr 6, 2010I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. All went well until I upgraded the video drivers for the nvidia chipset on my motherboard. If I leave Gnome to start with the single user i created i get a black screen and 'mode not supported ' message on the monitor. BUT if i drop to root and 'startx' all is well and i can adjust the various screen resolutions and they all work well.
At this point i created another user name to check, and that works fine also, but if i drop back to the original user i get no screen unless i select 800x600, although all the other resolutions work fine with root and the other user name. Im stumped as I presume there's only one xorg.conf file for all users.

Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. Oct 17, 2010When I play large HD videos in mplayer, the video and sound frequently get out of sync, and the video plays a little strangely (occasionally speeding up and occasionally slowing down).
I think it's because mplayer is only running on a single core. As I've got a quad-core processor, it seems inefficient. I've seen that there is theoretically a way to get mplayer to work with multicore setups, but it requires compiling with different options. That'd take me a little while to work through.
Ideally there would be a pre-compiled version in the software centre, or a player which has support built in (again, ideally in the software centre). Is there such a thing available?

May 30, 2011this happens with both VLC and Totem, when in either of those programs playing a video, if I click on one of the top menus, say View in Totem, the video stays on top of the drop down options. In order to see the options I have to hover over them with the mouse at which point they become momentarily visible. I read a post somewhere where someone had a similar problem and it was solved by reinstalling Compiz, but I've tried uninstalling it entirely, reinstalling it, etc. and none of it works. It doesn't happen with flash videos in firefox, it does happen with visualisations in Totem, and it only started happening since I upgraded to 11.04.

I have previously used Cinelerra-cv (on Karmic) and recently Openshot (on Lucid) with not much trouble. I have been sampling other video editors (Kdenlive, avidemux, kino etc). Now I have my video card crashing whichever I use, mainly when trying to load clips. I have disabled Compiz, uninstalled all video editors and then reinstalled one at a time. I still get early video crashes whichever I try.
