CentOS 5 Hardware :: 5.6, Iwlcore, Blinking Led On A Thinkpad T400?

Apr 9, 2011

I've just successfully updated a Thinkpad T400 from 5.5 to 5.6 with no problems. In fact, the wireless led indicator now works, which is kind of neat. What's annoying is that it blinks whenever there is network traffic.Perhaps I'll get used to it, but if I can just make it "on" when the network is on and "off" when the network is off, that would be better.Googling turns up this issue on ubuntu and other distros in the past year or so, and the recommended fix was to add the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/iwlcore.conf

options iwlcore led_mode=1

I did this, unloaded and reloaded the kernel modules, but to no avail. Output was:

[cbender@kauai modprobe.d]# rmmod iwlagn
[cbender@kauai modprobe.d]# rmmod iwlcore
[cbender@kauai modprobe.d]# modprobe iwlagn[code].........

Having problems with getting wireless to work on my laptop. My problem is that the plasmoid-network manager shows that I am connected to my wireless network (with SSID "Fatty"), but I can't get onto the web. Hardware :: Thinkpad T400 Graphics Cards And Fglrx 9.8

Aug 18, 2009

I have a Thinkpad T400 running FC11 and am using integrated (intel) graphics, because I know FC11 doesn't have 3-D acceleration support for the ATI Radeon Mobility 3470. I take this to be because the 2.6.29 kernel and the X Server release were too new, and unsupported. I know from phoronix that 2.6.29 is now in fact supported with the advent of 9.8, and that I believe my X server is supported too.

As far as I can tell, this means I **should** be able to use fglrx..I was wondering how one backed up their X configuration on Fedora, as it doesn't really use xorg.conf very much. I was also wondering how to reconfigure X for a completely new graphics card with a completely new driver, without reinstalling. That is, quite simply, out of the question for me, as I've made many customizations to Fedora, and I don't have the time to back them up and restore them.

Slackware :: High Consumption On Idle With A Thinkpad T400?

Oct 29, 2010

My laptop has a very high consumption when running on idle (I mean nothing that write on the disk or video etc..). I read on lenovo forums that people could get 10-12W and I can hardly get lower than 20W. My cpufreq is set to powersave and my cpus are always at the lowest scale.

configure my laptop to save some power. It used to last almost 7h on battery (sadly I don't remember the consumption) on Ubuntu and now it can barely last more than 3h with slackware.

My config is:
T400 intel duo core 3,06ghz
14.1" TFT display with 1440x900 (WXGA+) resolution with LED backlight
Switchable Graphics with Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 (256 MB)

After booting I receive an error msg saying that my video is not recognized and asks if I want to fix it. Dunno how to do that, so I cancel. After that I can only use 800x600, wanted widescreen (1440x900). Is there a simple way to fix it? Liked Ubuntu, wanted to use it.

Ubuntu Installation :: ThinkPad T400 - Video And Webcam Drivers

Dec 30, 2010

I would like to install Ubuntu 10 on my Thinkpad T400, but would like feedback from other T400 users that have Ubuntu running on their laptops. First, will it recognize all my hardware? I hear most Thinkpad users had issues with video and webcam drivers, but that was with an earlier version of Ubuntu 8 through 9. So my plan is to have Ubuntu 10 as my primary OS on the T400 and use Win7 within VMware.

CentOS 5 :: Gnome-terminal And Blinking Text

Jan 11, 2011

I have a text based application that I need to use inside X. So I created a gnome-terminal profile called counter3 which runs the command /counter/counter3. I then created added a startup application: gnome-terminal --full-screen --hide-menubar --window-with-profile=counter3

Everything works great. I turn the PC on, it auto logins to the user counter, X starts, and the counter application starts full screen. The only problem is the text doesn't blink when there is a problem. How can I get the text to blink? The text blinks if I boot into runlevel 3 and run counter3 manually. However I need to run counter3 in X as there is a second application that requires X. The text application runs in the foreground and is used constantly. The X based application is run in the background.

CentOS 5 :: 5.6 Install Blinking Cursor At Boot?

Aug 20, 2011

Im using 5.6 DVD install to a HW raid1 Card (2 x SSDs in raid 1, Arcea Card Natively recognized by centos anaconda).I select to wipe the entire drive and remove ALL partitions (ive also tried setting this to just remove linux partitions). The install location (raid drive) is /dev/sdh the A-G are other 1.5TB drives.I also un-check EVERY drive except the raid drive (sdh). it then asks me if it ok to wipe/reformat drive (Prompts Yes or No, i click yes)Every time i do this install i get the blinking cursor after post. Im told this means i dont have GRUB installed, i do NOT disable grub or anything related to the boot-loader in anaconda installer (all those setting are left at default). ive also tried setting this to NO boot loader, and i get the same result.

This DOES work as i have gotten it to install and run prefect for a few weeks. I think what i did then was removed ALL THE DRIVES except teh raid drive, and then did the install then. This way the install drive was /dev/sdA and all worked, even when i added the drives back online after the install, the machine ran great and booted several times this way (i had to do a os re-install or else i would have left it as is.)YES bios is 100% set to the raid card as the first device to boot from, Centos 6 installed to the same raid drive boots and works great - but i need 5.6.no google help on this one, searched hard, only one article on Ubuntu doing this all the time.also everytime im retrying to install 5.6, i go into the HW raid card's bios and delete and recreate the raid1 volume (it takes about 10 min for it to format and initialize the raid1 array

CentOS 5 :: Kernel OOPS - Scroll Lock Keys Start Blinking

Apr 25, 2009

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.3 on a VMWare virtual machine running VMWareServe 1.0.4 build-56528. I have 8 virtual machines that are running some older kernel (RH FedoraCore 4) without any trouble. My system has an AMD Athlon XP 1800 processor and has 1G RAM. Every time during the installation after choosing skip media (I have already checked that the media is OK) I get a kernel OOPS and the capslock and scroll lock keys start blinking. My first guess was that this could be a ACPI issue, so I have disabled ACPI using the acpi=no boot option. The problem persists with the acpi=no option set. During the boot install process, I have seen some messages like this one

ACPI Exception (processor_core-xxxx): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [xxxxxxxxx]

I have searched for this issue and found a RedHat Bug 435653 that reports this same issue, but this report is somewhat old, so i think that this issue as already been fixed and reflected to upstream. I have tried also to install using the text mode installation, but the same problem. To further isolate this problem, i have avoided the hardware detection and this was the first time that i have overcome the first screen (test media screen), as i have choosen with the success the language and the keybord layout. After choosing the beyboard layout, the kernel OOPS shows up again. On the screen 4 (debug screen) I don't see any relevant messages.

At first there was no problem. There is no particular program that causes a crash. I havent edited any configurations. The most recent packages I installed were some data recovery packages and Gkrellm. Is there any way to find the time of installation for each package?

I upgraded to kernel 2.6.32 Ive been looking at the syslogs and before every crash there are several lines of:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lenovo T400 - Intel Video Card And Compiz - Desktop Effects Cannot Be Enabled

I'm running Karmic Koala 64 bit on my Lenovo T400 laptop with switchable graphics having both Intel and ATI video cards. I've set my bios to use the intel card only and turned the automatic switching off. So far so good, but I'd like to turn on compiz for basic window animations. When I try to start compiz by selecting

Code:

"Appearance Preferences" -> "Visual Effects" -> "Normal"

I get an error message saying "Desktop effects cannot be enabled"

doesn't show any new drivers that could be installed. This was working out of the box when I first installed Karmic Koala a few month ago, but things got messed up when I installed the restricted drivers for my ATI card. Now I can enable compiz if I switch to ATI from my bios settings and install the drivers but I don't want to use it due to high power consumption and I've removed the ATI drivers.

Fedora :: 15 Locking Up On Thinkpad X41

I've recently installed F15 on my old thinkpad X41 to give it a go after sticking to ubuntu for quite a bunch of years now.

Somehow there seems to be a problem with the installation tho: the screen freezes up (as does the keyboard) after a while using it - not many programs open, a couple of workspaces enabled, no memory or CPU stress whatsoever - and all i'm left with is a moving mouse cursor. Ctrl + alt + F2 doesn't work and the only solution is to restart the laptop again.

Tried the fallback mode and same thing still happens, so maybe its not a graphic card issue.

Hardware :: Use HDD In ThinkPad Ultrabase?

Nov 23, 2009

My ThinkPad has an UltraBase dock. The dock has a drive bay for either (1) the CD/DVD drive, or (2) an HDD drive. I put a new larger HDD drive into the dock and booted CloneZilla. I get an error "only one drive found". From the shell, I could only find the original system drive and could not see the HDD in the dock. During boot of the CloneZilla media, I get an error saying that there is an HDD problem "press <esc> to continue".

I have another HDD drive and a second ThinkPad with Ubuntu linux. I can see both the internal drive and the dock drive on the Ubuntu box. CloneZilla won't see any HDD in the dock bay. Ubuntu sees the internal drive as /dev/sda and the ultra-bay drive as /dev/hda. Both drives are mechanically SATA devices. I suppose that there are drivers or kernel modules missing from the CloneZilla ISO so that all-both drives are available.

Debian Multimedia :: DE For Older Thinkpad T41?

Jul 21, 2010

I was wondering if anyone uses older laptops (for e.g., Centrino M) like Thinkpads from the T40-series.I am finding LXDE to be extremely buggy. There's been more than one occasion in which I've been totally surprised at weird 'events.' It's been so often that it annoys me now and I wish to switch DEs now.

I guess my choices are Gnome, KDE and xfce. I think KDE 4 will be too bloated so I guess that leaves Gnome and xfce. I also read that LXDE is actually a 'beta' (release?) even though LXDE versions are in 'release' form. I come across too many 'bugs' so I think the other desktops, even if it takes up a bit more resources, is a compromise I have to take.

Is xfce the best choice for an older laptop like mine? I thought LXDE sounded great and had great potential but the amount of bugs I find and the fact it looks like there's not much of a team developing and working on it, is disconcerting. Hopefully, things will improve but I don't want to work out or encounter 'bugs' on my laptop so often.

I have tried both upgrading and new installs from an fc10 HD but it still fails to format.I have also tried formatting using fc10 (ext3) and have just read if I am using a live CD it must have an ext4 partition on it, but I assume it should be OK with the LXF DVD?I have been using Fedora for over five years now but if I cannot resolve the problem soon I will have to reluctantly change my OS, but before resort to doing this, could someone point me to any information that might help me to resolve the problem?I did try manually partitioning using gparted and ext3 without LVM but that also fails.

Ubuntu :: 8.10 - IBM ThinkPad R32 Poor Performance

Feb 8, 2010

i'm trying to run ubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex on an old hand-me-down laptop that i got from a family member, and i've noticed that the performance is actually much worse than it was on windows xp professional (32-bit).

first of all let me give you my specs:
ibm thinkpad r32
intel mobile pentium 4-m 2.0 ghz
ati radeon mobility m6 (i think this is actually the mobility radeon 7000 igp) with 16mb ram
256 mb ram (pc-2100)

i understand that these are very low performance specs, but it feels like the computer is running very sluggishly even for those specs. the computer ran just fine in windows xp, but is extremely sluggish in ubuntu. it seems like it detected all the hardware just fine, but i feel like it may not be utilizing the cpu and/or video to the extent that it should be. a couple of places where it really seems to struggle is when first opening new programs, viewing flash intensive web 2.0 type webpages (i.e. videos), and listening to music/podcasts (with rhythmbox).

it seems like rhythmbox really kills my performance more than anything else, but the performance is poor all around compared to xp, and i feel like that shouldn't be the case. like i said, i understand that the specs are poor, but it feels like it's not even living up to those specs. i know that 8.10 is old and outdated now, but it's what i had laying around and i figured that it might perform better on this old deprecated laptop than 9.10 would anyway. am i wrong in this assumption? would 9.10 perform better for me?
