Ubuntu :: Installing Webcam Drivers On 11.04 ?
Jun 8, 2011
I've been trying to install all the drivers for my laptop that I recently installed Ubuntu on and I've been having trouble installing the driver for my webcam.
I followed the instructions on Ubuntu Documentation > Community Documentation > Ov51x (sorry but I can't post links) but I'm having trouble with preparing the installation files with the "make" command.
This is the message I keep getting:
(See attached picture)
Also, as an aside, I often get the message when I'm trying to install a package that it is "Unable to locate pack ______".

I have a Philips webcam I would like to get to work with a proper driver on Ubuntu 10.04. It will work under a generic driver on programs such as Skype, but as soon as I try to use it for web cam sites such as BlogTV, it will say "Webcam required on this site."I have seen similar posts on this and other websites, pointing towards SPCA, but everything I have tried has not worked. When trying SPCA, I tried to do install on the terminal and all that would happen is terminal would respond with: "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded."Is there an easier method I am missing here, or is there something am I doing wrong?

Okay, I've got a small webcam for my laptop that doesn't come with Linux drivers, only Windows drivers. Any linux-based drivers that came with Ubuntu 9.04 that might work don't. How do I make the Windows drivers for the webcam work with the hardware so I can use the webcam?

Ubuntu 10.10 installed no problems. Like what i see so far But how do I install drivers etc for Webcam (Logitech Quickcam STX) Printer (Cannon MP600). I'm reasonable at sorting out problems in windows but this OS seems like you really have to be a computer wizard. Am I out of my depth using this? or am I just missing the obvious.

The label on the underneath of the webcam itself states:

I would like to install Ubuntu 10 on my Thinkpad T400, but would like feedback from other T400 users that have Ubuntu running on their laptops. First, will it recognize all my hardware? I hear most Thinkpad users had issues with video and webcam drivers, but that was with an earlier version of Ubuntu 8 through 9. So my plan is to have Ubuntu 10 as my primary OS on the T400 and use Win7 within VMware.

So I found this webcam lying around, and I ordered the installation disk online and it came in the mail the other day, so I installed it with Wine and got all the programs it came with to work fine. However, I can't get my computer to recognize the webcam when I plug it into the USB port. Does anyone know what I can do to get this thing to work?

I did some research on both Mic and Webcam, but nothing for the mic seems to work, and I can't seem to find decent instructions for installing the spca5xx driver for my webcam. lsusb result for my webcam: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04fc:0561 Sunplus Technology Co., Ltd Flexcam 100
My mic, on the otherhand, doesn't seem to be nothing too special. It plugs into the back of the computer right next to the speakers. I've searched everywhere for how to fix these, but can't seem to find anything that works. As for my mic, I've tried installing the... linux modules backport, etc... through synaptic, nothing. I've gone through alsamixer, and sound properties. The only thing I can think of, is that the computer isn't reading my mic.
Sorry if this post is kind of scattered, but I've gotten 2 hours of sleep last night, and not able to sleep again, Also, if anyone can point me in a direction of IM services that allow AIM, MSN, and YIM chat support through my friends on the windows OS. I've heard of Skype, but I don't want to seem too demanding to ask them all to download a program just to speak with / see me.

When I had a wubi install(after I restarted, logged in, etc.) a little icon appeared in the top right-hand corner of the screen informing me of an nvidia driver update, which was required to run compiz desktop effects. Now I have ubuntu installed on an actual hard drive(wubi was deleted beforehand) and I get no such icon. So I'm wondering how to update my drivers. BTW I have a 9500GT

I have been using Linux for over a month and have gone through several books on it. My weak point in linux is system internals and the kernel, (which I am reading up on now). I am a computer scientist and so I am computer savvy, but have not had much experience until recently with linux. (I was a windows guy, but Ubuntu 10.10 has changed my opinion) I am trying to install drivers for the alfa networks wireless adapter AWUS036H. I followed their online manual and I didn't get very far. After looking at the error messages then I assume it is a kernel issue. Here is the error messages I get when I am trying to make the program:
steven@steven-Satellite-A100:~/Downloads/Software/Wireless_Adapters/AWUS051NH/Drivers/RT2870_LinuxSTA_V2.3.0.0$ sudo make
[sudo] password for steven:
make -C tools

I'm reasonably new to Linux and very new to Ubuntu . I've just installed 9.10 as a dual boot on a Windows XP Pro Dell Inspiron 9200. I have a Samsung CLP-315 that I need to configure first as a local printer then as a wireless network printer. I found the software (.bin file) on the Samsung site and downloaded it but that's as far as I got. Can I use any of the GUI package managers or do I need to use Terminal and command line syntax? Here's the real question "what is the syntax for installing software/drivers?"

I've got an old Gateway desktop machine that a friend gave me, but any time I try to do something in a window-based environment like GNOME or KDE, the system locks up. I'm under the impression that this is a driver issue since the ethernet and video are integrated on the motherboard and neither works appropriately.
I cracked the case and got the number for the motherboard, which is: 4000811. From here I'm not quite sure what to do to make sure I've got the right drivers for the motherboard in place and could use some I'm on 10.04 server and ONLY have access to a command line.
