Fedora Installation :: Will F14 Detect The VT8251 Connected SATA Drives?

There is a FC4 Server with A8V-MX mobo currently running 2x WD500 SATA drives in RAID1 with a third WD500 SATA drive for data backup. This machine has been running 24/7 since January 2007.The plan is to replace the WD500s with WD 2TB SATA II drives in a similar setup as above. i.e. 2 drives in RAID1 and the third drive for data backup.Definitely looking to do a clean Fedora 14 install on the 2TB but have some questions.
1. Will Fedora 14 detect the VT8251 connected SATA drives?
2. If not, how do I get drivers so it will? (I have the mobo CD with makedisk, but prob for windows)
I already have the 14 x86-64 DVD ready to go, but I am not yet at the site.the BIOS settings are: SATA, RAID or AHCI.
Just what the title says ... I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 and it does not detect either 300G SATA drive in my system. One of them is /home for my non-OS software and the other is used for data storage.
It does detect the drive (SDC) where I have 9.04 installed, but /home is on one of the SATA drives. Where to start? 9.04 works just fine, but I'm running tio problems with FLASH web sites insisting I have to upgrade Flash and Adobe doesn't have anything for 9.04.
I've been struggling a bit with install F11. F10 installs without issue. I have two internal SATA drives, a PATA DVD-ROM and a USB drive. The BIOS recognizes everything. However, when I got to the disk partition utility, Anaconda could never detect one of the SATA devices. I tried swapping cables, ports, etc. No luck. Today, I ran across this Bug thread: [URL] I checked the screens Ctrl-Alt-F1-6. Nothing obvious. But, for fun (from the bug thread) I went to the prompt on 2 and ran:
dmraid -r -E It found an "nvidia" RAID "thingy". Forgive my ignorance on what it really is called or what it does. Anyway, I answered yes to erase the "thingy" and voila. I was able to install F11. Not sure if I made a good title, but I've seen bits and pieces of people having similar problems with F11. And BTW, the drive that had "nvidia" on it was from a machine that was using nvidia hardware RAID 0 - but F10 had no problems with it.
I have a 500gig SATA drive and a 320gig IDE drive installed in an HP a6700y/9150e 1.8GHz Quad, 4 gig ram... The Fedora installer only sees the 500g SATA drive, and not the 320g IDE drive where I want to install Fedora. Now I know that I can't always get what I want, but in this case I am not willing to mess with the working Vista installation just to get Fedora installed.
Vista BTW sees the 320 just fine. I am clueless as to where to begin with this. I gave up in Fedora with my Celeron based machine because of speed issues.... But this new box should have more than enough horsepower to run F!
I am attempting to install F11 from full media onto Abit IP35 Pro m/b connected to two (unitilized) Seagate 300GB SATA drives (7200.9) and attempting to create a software RAID1 setup as I have in FC8. I am using the graphical setup (as I have in other releases.) However, the ONLY "drive" shown when creating a RAID partion is /dev/mapper/nvidia_jhhdfjhf with free space of 286165 MB. There is not /dev/sda0, /dev/sda1 drives that I would have expected to see.
NOTE: All BIOS options for SATA are set to "IDE", not RAID or AHCI. The Seagate Seatools software sees both SATA drives and all tests are successful. What now? It seems like this is a major step backwards from F10. It does not seem mere mortals can install with RAID1 on this motherboard.
I have an Asus P5K motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo 8400. It has 2 SATA hard disks, a 250 GB Seagate and a 500GB Hitachi.
I've been running Fedora 10 x86_64 for 6 months on this computer without problems.
I'm trying to do a new Fedora 11 install on this computer but the installer (Anaconda?) only detects the Hitachi disk.
I've tried to make a new Fedora 10 install to check if it was a media or disk problem and it detects the two hard disks.
I've tried to install it via a Live CD, and the installer only detects the Hitachi disk. The LiveCD detects the two hard disks, I can access it, partition, format, write, but the installer only detects the Hitachi.
I've tried to change from Enhanced SATA (AHCI) to Compatible in BIOS without success and I've changed SATA cables from one disk to the other, changed the disk order and nothing.
Must I enter some boot parameters for Fedora 11? Has the LiveCD installer some options?
I upgraded F14 to F15; However, F15 no longer recognizes my 3 sata disks connected through Marvell controller. The controller is an integrated Marvell chipset 88SE6480. The controller has its own manufacturer driver but it was intended for RHEL 5.4 (mv64xx) and installation of this driver fails to generate mv64xx driver.
ubuntu 8.04 server can not detect seagate sata hard drive 2tb or sata Lg dvdrw x22 sata drive .is it possible to install it without buying a pci ide sata card?is it possible to get a driver for sata driver and sata drive that can be recognise by ubunto 8.04 server ?or to get the files for 1.44 floppy diskdoes the late edition of unbutu recognise sate hdd and sata cdrw drive automaticly during the installation of the unbutu?
1. I install Desktop 10.4 or server 10.10 on my 250GB IDE drive using guided partition structure.
2. I add SATA Drives (of varying types and sizes to test) to the system and create a raid.
3. When I restart grub won't initialize with the SATA's plugged in.
4. I have tried this in various ways, installing with the SATAs already connected, making the raid in the install process etc.
I have tried re-installing formatting the drives in windows, deleting partitions, making new ones, low level formatting. It appears to be related to an issue with GRUB re-ordering drives so it is trying to boot off the wrong drive - I would edit grub but it doesn't get that far into the boot. Just rudely flashes it''s cursor at me. Is this really so uncommon that there isn't a straight simple answer?
What makes me think it has to do with partitions and formatting is that when I first added new drives they worked on the boot. I even made the raid in Desktop mode in Server - Rebooted- Rude flashing cursor.
I have a sata card in my RHEL5 server that is not working. It has a 1.5tb hard drive attached to it that I would like to use. It seems that the 2.6.18 kernel did not detect and use it by default. I was able to find some info about the

Recently i upgraded my dvd writer from pata to sata, now i install LG sata dvd writer into my system, now my problem is that its unable to detect in my fedora 8 box , but i can successfully boot fedora 8 from this dvd writer.i have a kernel version 2.6.23. solution for this.
I'm trying to install 10.04b2 x64 on my new rig and for some reason the live cd can't detect both of my 1TB Sata 3 drives. There is no Raid and the bios has them flagged as IDE. I have also tried adding pci=nomsi to the boot string to no avail.
The system is running great in fedora 7 or 12 with 6 sata drives installed. I tried to install 2 more sata drives(total 8 drives), tested some combinations: 6 drives in sata ports and 2 in sas ports, or 2 in sata ports and 6 in sas ports... the BIOS can detect all 8 drives, but the fedora 7 and 12 just detect 6 sata drives. It could be problem of sata/sas drivers of Linus. The chip set: Intel ESB2(6 ports) + LSI 1068E SAS controller(8 sas/sata ports) Linux: Fedora 7 and Fedora 12
I've posted about this problem on a lot of similar threads and found nothing, so I'm creating a new one in the hopes of finally getting some answers.Ubuntu 9.10 never detected my two, IDE-controlled, non-RAID SATA drives. I never bothered to make it until the PATA drive that was running karmic died. Now I'm trying to dual-boot with my XP install on those SATA drives, but I can't get ubuntu to recognize them.Mobo: ASUS a8v-xe, North Bridge VIA K8T890, South Bridge VIA VT8251, Phoenix AwardBIOSHDs: one SATA 3.0 40 gB Maxtor drive, and one SATA 3.0 500 gB WD drive. The drives are not RAID, and the BIOS lists them as IDE-controlled.The install partitioner does not detect any drives. When I boot off of the live CD, neither GParted nor Disk utility detects them.I have tried each of the following, with no luck:
-removing DMRAID, both in Synaptic and Terminal -installing with 8.10, 9.10 txt-alternate, and 10.04 Beta -booting in expert mode with txt-alternate CD and disabling RAID
I have two drives one is a 500 gig SATA drive running Vista SP 2 now the other Maxtor 160 Gig drive is empty. I would like to install Ubuntu on that drive. Now I just though of installing from the setup however would this screw up my Vista partition ?
I have recently built a new system which has two internal sata drives. The plan was to install windows 7 one drive and ubuntu 10.10 on the second drive for KVM hosts. I started with the windows install which completed, then I went forward and installed ubuntu 10.10 64bit to my second drive (sdb). During the installation I chose to manually partition my drive. i partitoned the drive (sdb) as follows
I then selected sdb to hold the boot record, as it was set by default to sda (my windows drive). The OS installed fine. I then went to reboot my system so go back into windows, by selecting the first drive in the bios. Once selected the system keeps booting into Ubuntu, no matter which drive I select. Now I checked the grub.cfg file and i see all references to hd1 there is no reference for windows found. I then proceeded to do 'sudo update grub2' this did not pickup any reference to my windows droive to add to the grub menu. When i select the ubuntu drive to boot fom my bios, i get no grub menu appaer it just boots quite happily into ubuntu. Can anyone please provide any resoloution to this, I can provide additonal outputs regarding my partion tables etc. later this evening when I get back from work.
I have recently added 2 500GB sata drives to my machine. I have a Supermicro X6 mobo (yes its rather old) and the Bios recognizes the drives as Master 2 and Master 3 ide , but the linux will not recognize the drives. The system is running RH8 kernel 2.4.31 and i dont have the option of upgrading the kernel at the moment. Is there any way to get the linux to recognize the drives?
I have the following PC set up: Dell 8400 with 3 GB of RAM with 3 160 GB SATA drives: The first one has Windows XP installed on it. The second one has been newly formatted and Ubuntu 10.04 has just been installed on it (20 GB / and 6 GB swap) with grub being installed on the first partition and not the master boot record. The remainder will be for storage for Windows. The third drive is simply storage for Windows.
At this point I am able to boot XP just fine, but I'm not able to boot Linux. I just getting a blinking cursor or the PC just reboots when I choose Linux. I believe I have set up my boot.ini properly using: C:Bootsectc.lnx="Linux Ubuntu" After running dd if=/dev/sdc1 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 and putting that file in place.
For reference, I don't believe this is a Linux problem, as much as I am simply trying to guide the ntldr to be properly pointed to a place where it can boot Linux. When I go into the bios and disable the first and the third hard drives, grub pops right up and I'm able to boot Linux with no problem, so that piece is fine. I think it's just now trying to get the correct syntax so I can boot Linux without having to disable drives and reenable them.
For kicks I even tried these syntax types in boot.ini: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)="Linux11" (i.e. 2nd disk, 1st partition ...etc...)
I read many troubleshooting documents on dual booting and so forth but I just can't get this right. For reference, I stated the way XP views my Hard Drives in the intro, which seem to be a different order than Linux sees them, yet I believe I've tried all the combos of settings for this to work (yet clearly have not). I have attached the output of boot_info_script*.sh here: [URL]. Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ..... Devices which don't seem to have a corresponding hard drive.
I recently finished installing Fedora 9 on a Prolient ML 330 G6 Server, but i configured the SATA hard drives to be viewed as four seperate hard drives. I was asked to merge the drives to be seen as one 800GB hard drive, my biggest fear is that we had set up Samba to share folders between fedora 9 giving specific users access to specific files saved on the Prolient server, will those settings be lost.And could you call that a File Server or do you have to enter any more settings And also if anyone could point me to a tutorial on Logical Volume Management and Raid specifically for fedora 9
I have a Windows XP system, and wanted to install Ubuntu to a 100 GB XT3 partition on the same drive. I was told I could chainload Ubuntu from the NT Loader menu. I booted from a Ubuntu 10.04 CD and ran the installer. It didn't find any hard drives. On a hunch, I tried the 10.04 alternate installer CD. That DID find the hard drive and partitions. I had the installer make /dev/sda7 (the XT3 partition) the root. Installation proceeded smoothly, but then the installer told me it did not see any other OS's on my drive! Why? I directed the installer to place grub on /dev/sda7 instead of the MBR.
Per the instructions I was given, I used DD to copy the first 512 bytes of /dev/sda7 to the Windows primary partition (sda1) as bootloader.lnx. But the resulting file is empty, and it won't boot. I repeated the whole process - formatting, installing FOUR times, and same results. I have no idea where GRUB was installed. It is apparently not in the MBR, because I still have my normal Windows boot. I downloaded the 10.10 alternate installer and got the same exact results. Even switched from XT3 to XT4. After two weeks of this nonsense, I still have yet to see Linux boot.
Having an issue I've been unable to resolve for for a week now. I've 2 drives, SATA1 for OS and operating files, SATA2 for media storage. came home last week to an update manager window present and error in Transmission stating unable to second drive due to "Read Only" status. the drive was never set to read only status but following the update manager a reboot was needed. once rebooted, the GRUB menu came up (dual boot system), selected Ubuntu then booting stopped. blank black screen with blinking cursor. rebooted several times, checked bios recognition of both drives, replaced cables, switched power to drive to separate cables, used different SATA ports but nothing worked. finally removed the second media storage drive and Ubuntu booted normally. now any time i connect the second drive and reboot it fails to boot into ubuntu or XP. i removed the media drive and installed it in another computer and it worked normally. have searched everything i can but no answers have been found so far. wondering if anyone here has had similar trouble or has idea for what to try.

Trying to install SUSE on a perfectly working PC that was running Windows. Blew away all the partitions and formated the drives.When trying to install SUSE, Installer will not detect my two hard disks. Tried with version 10.x, 11.1 and 11.2, without success.My Mobo is a XFX GeForce 8209, and my SATA drives are both Seagates (1x120GB, 1x320GB). I've tried different SATA mode selection (i.e. SATA, AHCI, and RAID) without any success either.I've tried to look for SATA controller drivers for my Mobo, to try to load on Installer startup, but failed there too.
Does anyone know if fdisk is currently blind to SATA drives? If so, is there an alternative command one can use to list ALL partitions, mounted and unmounted, that are available to the system?
I realize this has been asked many times before, but I'm fairly certain I've read through the majority of those threads and haven't found a working solution yet. I recently built up a Ubuntu Server 10.10 x64 box for backups, serving up files, and development activities. The server is running SATA drives in AHCI mode. Because this is a file server I have quite a few hard drives installed, which are currently a mix of WD 1TB Black and Green drives. I'm attempting to get my non-boot/data only drives to spin down after 10 minutes. I've tried the following:
1. Edit hdparm.conf with the following, replacing 'b' with the identifier for each disk:

/dev/sdb { spindown_time = 120 }
This fails, and based on my research I'm pretty sure udev isn't properly running the hdparm configuration anyway.
2. I've also tried manually setting the spin down time with hdparm as follows (via command line and through rc.local):

hdparm -q -S 120 /dev/sdb
Which states that it successfully set the spin down timer to 10 minutes, but this also fails as the drive never spins down.
3. Finally, I just forced it to spin down immediately with:

hdparm -y /dev/sdb
This worked! Unfortunately, that approach isn't terribly useful. The drive stayed spun down for 20 minutes (thus far), so I haven't bothered to run iostat, etc to try and figure out if something is keeping the drives active. I don't believe there is because one of my drives isn't even mounted currently and it also won't spin down automatically.
(Ubuntu 10.10) I went to System->Preferences->Power Management and checked spin down hard disks whet possible. I have two internal sata hard drives. One is for the OS and the other is for media. Neither Hard disk is being spun down. Is there something else I need to do?
I asked this on an Ubunut forum about a year or so ago but got no response. I have an Asus M2NE-SLI motherboard. All my HDD's are Sata. I have 2 burners - both IDE. For windows, it see's my hard drives in the order I have them setup according to their cable placement on the motherboard (Sata ports 1-3, Sata 4 I have set for external sata). However within Linux - and I mean any linux distro I've tried (Gentoo, Sabayon, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, even Gparted) see's my Sata drives completly out of order.
For example:
Sata Port 1 - Primary HDD - 500GB Sata Port 2 - Secondary - 500GB Sata Port 3 - Secondary - 250GB
Windows see's them as drives C:, D:, E: Respectivly Linus see's:
Sata Port 1: SDB Sata Port 2: SDC Sata Port 3: SDA
Or something like that. Its really messed up. Does anyone know what could be causing this? This causes all sorts of problems setting up a dual boot environment because Windows will place its boot loader on the Primary boot drive (Sata Port 1), Grub will install anywhere i tell it to, but because the drive order is messed up it breaks - unless I completely mess around with the drive order in the bios. I've resorted to putting Windows on one HDD, and Linux on an old external Sata for the time being, and use the Bios's Drive Boot Manager to select which drive to use. This is not the ideal way to run it.
i have 2 shiny new 1TB SATA drives. I have a running system already, basic install on a single disk. install both new drives & raid1 them on a single partition - mount them for storage. Seems simple but all i can find are howto's on instaling the whole system & booting on RAID.
I am running the 2.6.25.14 kernel on a RedHat 5.3 X64 bit OS. I am booting off a USB compact flash. When I put two hard drives in a test system the OS does not allow me to access either, however if I have one hard drive inserted I am able to mount the hard drive fine. Extremely strange. When both hard drives are inserted dmesg reports a sde and sdf, it just will not let me access them. I am not sure if this is a hardware issue or OS.
fdisk /dev/sde says unable to open. smartctl -i /dev/sde says NO Medium found. When I boot with only one inserted i am able fdisk. mount, etc... /dev/sde just fine. The USB controller has 5 slots to insert various media, but I am just using it for its compact flash slot.Why will the system play nice with one hard drive and not with two?
I have an old computer that I want to turn in to a backup server. I was planning on using a 1 TB drive connected by a SATA card since the motherboard only has PATA. However when looking everything I've found makes it sound like I need to install the card for it to work. I want to know if I can install Debian to the hard drive through the SATA card or not?
