Ubuntu Installation :: USB Detected Beofre The Sata Disks Are?
Oct 19, 2010
used to run ARC linux and Windows 7 on my computer and i am now trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 X86_64When i used the live disc of Ubuntu 10.04 and load the installer it finds my four harddrive they way it should... sda, sdb, sdc, and sdd...When i however try the same with ubuntu 10.10 it displays my usb cardreaders drives first and then my hardrives as sde sdf sdg and sdh.I tried installing ubuntu with the reader unplugged and then reconnecting it after installation...But when i then boot with the reader attached it says it cannot mount drives sda, sdb, sdc and sdd becuase they are not ready.I think it is again detecting the usb cardreader before the sata controller ...Is there a way for me to alter the boot detection order so it will find my harddrives first and then the usb cardreaders ports ?
I have servers which contain SATA disks and SAS disks. I was testing the speed of writing on these servers and I recognized that SAS 10.000 disks much more slowly than the SATA 7200. What do you think about this slowness? What are the reasons of this slowness?
I am giving the below rates (values) which I took from my test (from my comparisons between SAS 10.000 and SATA 7200);
dd if=/dev/zero of=bigfile.txt bs=1024 count=1000000 when this comment was run in SAS disk server, I took this output(10.000 rpm)
(a new server,2 CPU 8 core and 8 gb ram)
1000000+0 records in 1000000+0 records out 1024000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 12.9662 s, 79.0 MB/s (I have not used this server yet) (hw raid1)
i installed latest ubuntu server 9.10 on my mini itx board which i have 1 4gb IDE disk and 4x2TB sata disks attached no i want those disks to automount on startup is there a way without modifiying fstab? the thing is, i want to expand the storage over time (next hard disks in a few months) and maybe a second mainboard in a year so i need a simple way to mount everything without being to mainboard specific like doing fstab entries
i currently try to mount 4 internal sata disks using hal on a server installation?
i did
apt-get install hal and copied a .fdi script to /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/30-storage-all.fdi
as far is i understand now i need a hal/dbus client gnome-volumen-manager seems to be one apt-get install gnome-volume-manager
now im stuck there is no such executable like gnome-volumen-manager thus, how does it work? how can i start it? how do i know if and why the .fdi script works or fails?
since its a server edition and its purpose should be a very minimized server install i dont want a GUI like gnome fully installed
I tried to install 11.04, but the partition tool shows no HDD. If I try to run Ubuntu from the CD, I can explore the HDD but the partition tool in the installation program won't find it. What can be wrong with my Promise SATA controller
I'm trying to install 10.04b2 x64 on my new rig and for some reason the live cd can't detect both of my 1TB Sata 3 drives. There is no Raid and the bios has them flagged as IDE. I have also tried adding pci=nomsi to the boot string to no avail.
I upgraded F14 to F15; However, F15 no longer recognizes my 3 sata disks connected through Marvell controller. The controller is an integrated Marvell chipset 88SE6480. The controller has its own manufacturer driver but it was intended for RHEL 5.4 (mv64xx) and installation of this driver fails to generate mv64xx driver.
I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 via a DVD-ROM but I faild. I got the message "no common cd-rom drive was detected." I have tried to install ubuntu 11.4 and failed too.
Hardware Setting:
DVD-ROM was attached to SATA 3.0 port. SATA controller was set to IDE mode. PCH is CougarPoint.
I use the same hardware setting to install Red Hat 6.0 and it works fine. I tried following boot option but in vain: noapic, acpi=off, nodmraid, all_generic_ide. It is ok to boot via a live usb but ubuntu 10.10 still can't find DVD-ROM. I have to use the hardware setting I descripted to install Ubuntu 10.10.
dmesg:

I am trying to install FC4 in my pc having WDC WD800JD SATA HDD. During the installation it shows that no HDD found. I have searched a lot but no driver are found for fedora core 4.
How to configure the master and slave on 5 Sata disks? Is there that or it is automatic.I install Debian, ok, master boot ok, on the first sataAnd at reboot, just after install, the boot hangs and no grub appears.
I've just removed fedora 10 and installed CentOS 5.4 both x86_56 on my Lenovo ThinkCentre 9091-CTO workstation, and observed serious performance degradation while intensive I/O operations and huge load without significant CPU consumption in user mode with about 50% in I/o wait. For example if I do the "tar xjvf some_large_tar.bz" file and run vmstat i get the output below. This is the only cpu and io intensive process running. The load gets up to 6 on C2D CPU and the machine has unacceptable responsivness.
[root@f00 ~]# vmstat 5 10 procs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- --system-- -----cpu------ r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa st
I have Fedora 13 installed in a new computer, and form some weird reason, udev is skipping three of my HDs. Looging the output for udev --triger, the entries for the HDs are skipped

Trying to install SUSE on a perfectly working PC that was running Windows. Blew away all the partitions and formated the drives. When trying to install SUSE, Installer will not detect my two hard disks. Tried with version 10.x, 11.1 and 11.2, without success. My Mobo is a XFX GeForce 8209, and my SATA drives are both Seagates (1x120GB, 1x320GB). I've tried different SATA mode selection (i.e. SATA, AHCI, and RAID) without any success either.I've tried to look for SATA controller drivers for my Mobo, to try to load on Installer startup, but failed there too.
I have a Dell Studio XPS running openSUSE 11.2 with dual mirrored disks (using Dell's SATA controller). Does anyone know how I can set up automatic monitoring of the disks so that I will be informed if either fail? I think smartd might be what I need here. Is that correct? I added: /dev/sda -a -d sat -m <my email> /dev/sda -a -d sat -m <my email>
smartd is running, but how do I know that it will report what I need? I also have a client with a Dell PowderEdge SC440 with SAS 5/iR also running openSUSE 11.2. They also require automatic monitoring. There doesn't seem to be a SAS directive for smartd. I notice that the newer release says it does support SAS disk. I upgraded to 5.39. On restart (with DEVICESCAN as the directive) I get the following in /var/log/messages for my SAS RAID disk.
Sep 18 10:47:26 harmony-server smartd[25234]: Device: /dev/sdb, Bad IEC (SMART) mode page, err=4, skip device I ran: smartctl -a /dev/sdb and got the result: smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu] (openSUSE RPM) Copyright (C) 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, smartmontools
Device: Dell VIRTUAL DISK Version: 1028 Device type: disk Local Time is: Sat Sep 18 11:32:08 2010 JST Device does not support SMART Error Counter logging not supported Device does not support Self Test logging
Is there some other tool/package that does support DELL virtual disks?
I've bought a new e-sata external HDD. It work fine if it's connected throught USB. The problem goes when I connect it throught e-sata. The disk isn't detected (see the first screenshot).I must restart my computer to get the HDD detected (the HDD must be pluged in while booting, I think). Is it possible to repair that? I need the HDD to be detected immidiately when connected, like USB, without any restart.
I have an issue with Hard Drives in GNU/Linux CentOS 5.3I installed linux 5.3 frash copy to new SATA MAXTOR 1000GB Hdd.And see the partitions is SATA MAXTOR 1000GB (NEW INSTALLATION CentOS 5.3)
/dev/sda1 Boot /dev/sda3 / (/dev/sda2 is the SWAP)
I am trying to install Debian 5.0 "Lenny" on a PC with a very new hardware config (i3 processor, DDR3 RAM,LG SATA DVD drive, and Seagate SATA HDD). During the hardware detection phase of installation, I get a message saying the driver for my CD drive is not known, and asking me to select one manually. The options I get are only 'devcdrom', which does not work, and my installation cannot proceed.
I tried the following:
1. I read in a similar query that to use SATA DVD drives, I will have to set some boot options, so tried entering install libatapi_enabled=1 as an install option. This showed 'unknown parameter' error followed by same problem.
2. My Intel m/b BIOS has an option to set the DVD drive to "Native" or "Legacy", default is Native. I also tried changing this to "Legacy". Still same problem.
3. Read that I have to point to different drivers, but don't know how to do this during the installation.
I have a working F-10 box with an older motherboard (pre-sata). The p-ata ports are full (4 drives), so I'm trying to add a sata controller and another drive. The sata controller plugs into the pci bus, but is not detected by the bios (very old). After booting, the OS loads the driver module(s) and detects the new controller and drive. I was able to add the new sata drive into the LVM system using system-config-lvm. All was fine until I rebooted.
I get pages of lvm errors and booting fails. It looks like it's trying to mount the volumes before the sata controller is modprobed. Is there a way to get the os to modprobe for the new controller before trying to mount? The extra drive space is on a data partition, not the boot partition.
All of my computers are second-hand (except 1 laptop but it doesn't count) and I see in my Dell 4600 there are 2 SATA connectors on the motherboard. I picked up a 250 GB SATA hard disk and cables recently and tried plugging it in but the system doesn't see it. I even disconnected all other disks to make sure there wasn't a conflict (master/slave) issue going on but the system still does not see it.
The disk is vibrating so I assume it is getting juice and is spinning. Is there a setting or something I have to do to tell the system to access the SATA? Do I have to look at RAID settings if there is only 1 SATA disk? Can I not have a SATA disk and an ATA disk plugged in at the same time? I want to try and determine if the disk is bad, or is it PEBKAC!
I have/had a PC with several hard drives, and a mix of ubuntu and windows on multi boot. The old boot drive died screaming, and I need to start again. (But my data is safe! yay!)
Is there anything special about which drive can be the main drive to start booting from? Or to put it another way, can I install to any of the other 3 and expect it to work, or do I need to switch them around so a different drive is on the connections for the recently dead one?
However fdisk and mount does not find the drive. I tried echo "---" /sys/class/scsi_host/host3/scan based on one of the previous threads but get "write error: invalid argument".
I bought a Rampage III Extreme Black Edition wich has a SATA III controller (Marvell 88SE9182). I try to install Fedeora Core 15, but FC15 just dont recognize any of my HDs placed in SATA III ports. Has any fellow succeed installing linux on this SATA Controller?
I keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:
1. Problem with SATA controller 2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA 3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI 4. Replacing the SATA cable 5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps
- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")
ubuntu 8.04 server can not detect seagate sata hard drive 2tb or sata Lg dvdrw x22 sata drive .is it possible to install it without buying a pci ide sata card?is it possible to get a driver for sata driver and sata drive that can be recognise by ubunto 8.04 server ?or to get the files for 1.44 floppy diskdoes the late edition of unbutu recognise sate hdd and sata cdrw drive automaticly during the installation of the unbutu?
