when on it`s own but if i put another drive on the same lead either as master or slave it is then reconised? If i boot into a boot disk for windows even though i have no c drive some of the utilities work the same and reconise it hd tune for instance.Would it have some thing to do with the size of the drive? Im using a fujitsu pentium 4 board.

Now, (I dont have discs, and a my cuz let me use his, and he lost the disc), so i cant exactly just repair the MBR. Is there a way i can add it to the bootloader?

Ok, so, I have Ubuntu 10.04 on the main drive (primary master) and xp on a second drive (secondary slave) and from what I've read sec. slave is hd3. I added the lines I found in another thread (here I think) but when I tried to boot xp it said the drive didn't exist.

I have facing a problem on installation of hadoop multinode cluster. I have installed single node cluster in 2 machines and configured the conf folder of both machines. i have taken one as master machine and another as slave. When i execute start-all.sh on master machine all the parameters are enabled properly on master but didnt enable on slave. I have an EeePC 901, with a 4gb SSD and a 16gb SSD installed. Trying to get Natty installed and hit a few problems not least of which, that it won't fit on the 4gb drive! However in my BIOS setup under HDD config it says:
Secondary Master=4gb
Secondary Slave=16gb
I have no other devices attached. Why aren't they Primary? And I can't seem to switch them round.
I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a laptop. The laptop does not have working cd-rom or an operating system installed. I was hoping to install via USB cd-rom. The bios is an old one and will not allow booting from USB. Does anyone know of a way for me to install?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was given an old Compaq Presario computer; it had a 3.2GB hard drive with windoze 98 (put your crucifixes down, please) and a somewhat broken CD drive. I replaced the CD with a spare DVD ROM and the hard drive was replaced with a spare 250GB. I also removed the old ISA Fax/modem and installed a PCI network card. On top of this I also burned a copy of Xubuntu 8.04 on my main PC, for loading onto the old timer.
But then I came to use the old machine, the BIOS recognised the new DVD ROM, but no menu appeared, just the word "COMPAQ", any attempt to access the BIOS met with no response, (would not respond to "Del" or "Esc" or any of the "F" keys) the PC then attempts to boot from the hard drive (it had an old version of, what I think may be Ubuntu, as it comes up with a GRUB error 1!
I did notice the DVD ROM drive's light flash during the boot sequence. how to access the BIOS?It would be a shame for me to throw this old PC out! (I could always salvage the parts, I have 2 other motherboards and cases ready to make up some more computers, making 5 computers in my network)
i have managed to install ubuntu onto the USB and everything is working fine but the problem i am having is that i can't seem to access the bios on the netbook so i can't boot from the USB.i managed to get acess to the root files using this guide:url...all i need to do is figure out how to get access to the Bios so i can change the settings so it boots from USB.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've just installed 10.04 twice on 2 separate disks and it seems to have done something really strange to them. BIOS will not recognise them anymore, it just waits but they never come online. I have to unplug the disk completely for the system to boot.The first time I thought I'd just lost a disk, but when exactly the same thing occurred the second time around, it seems like too much of a coincidence.The installer didn't recognise the disks first time around as they were part of a RAID group previously. I did a dmraid -E -r /dev/sda to fix. After that just installed as per every other time I've used.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

I am trying to try the OS by USB at the start into The BIOS If ya gets what I mean. It successfully loads The Options menu where you pick a choice like run from usb. So I run from usb and and it Loads Ubuntu just the purple background and the beans underneath it loading forever.

I am using Windows 7 Build 7100* with a computer I built a year ago. Intel e8400,6gb Ram, Asus P5Q SE Pro,and 100gb left on hard drive (30 Excluding cause I partitioned it.
I've played with Ubuntu, and a linux evangelist at work has talked me into trying it again.I happened to be wiping my machine, so my plan was to have Windows 7 and Ubuntu on one hard drive (100GB for Ubuntu, the rest for Windows), and the second hard drive for downloads, TV, films, etc.First I installed Windows, then I torrented the x64 Ubuntu 10.04 live CD iso, and burned it to a DVD. I booted from it and installed on the second partition, but I then found when I booted back into windows that my second hard drive wasn't there any more.
It didnt take long to work out that Ubuntu had installed using the second hard drive as a mirror. This is very confusing to me, as I've disabled RAID in my BIOS. I booted from the Ubuntu CD again and looked for options about this but didn't find any. Eventually out of frustration I just unplugged the second hard drive, but now when I boot from the CD to install, no hard drives show up for me to install to.
I'm trying to install ubuntu Linux on a Pentium 3 computer which does not support booting to the CD-ROM drives. What are my options on other ways to install? Could I either use a 3.5inch floppy disk to get it started or install on another computer and just switch the disk back over right before configuring all the hardware?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI know Ubuntu can be installed from a USB thumb drive but I have a unique problem. My CD drive in my laptop doesn't work any longer and I have no way to replace it. I know I can place Ubuntu on the flash drive but the bios in my laptop does not allow booting from USB and not ROM update for the laptop. So my question is, since this laptop does have Win7 on it, I can partition the drive to make room for a dual boot, but how do I get Linux on the new partition with out a CD Drive or bootable usb?

Around this time I already had a new computer. I decided to install Ubuntu on it to muck around with. However, Ubuntu also runs slowly and I have a dual-booting computer. However, when I try to get into the BIOS of the computer and run the 98 disk, I can hit every button and BIOS will not load. Question: How do I reinstall Windows if I can't access the BIOS?

To make this configuration, I have not enabled the raid from bios (since Ubuntu gave me problems) but I followed this guide [URL] (Official guides) to configure software RAID offered by ubuntu. Everything went ok and it works perfectly but when released the 10.04 and the system asks me to update, you think there will be some problem or leaving will be updated throughout unchanged RAID configuration?
I donwload the Ubuntu 10.04 *32bits ISO image, and i burned each image with diferent speeds. Then, i tried to install, appears the Language Selection screen, all good. then, the Localization screen, I select Colombia (I'm from Colombia), clic on forward and the mouse shows the "loading animation", but the PC doesn't do anything (I let it for 30 minutes). I tried with the 2 CD, but ever the same result. And in some times when I try to out and reboot appears an error, so I have to reboot manually (with a button ).
And other problem, is that my BIOS doesn't let me boot form USB, so I can't install form USB. The last opportunity, and tried to install it, upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10, but in the instalation it gave me some errors, and in the 80% (or something like that), appears a window asking me to install GRUB AND EVERYTHING FREEZES, so I had to rebbot manually, and reinstall Ubuntu 9.10.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on my WinXP desktop computer. I used the LiveCD and manually configured the partitions. I resized my XP partition (the entire SATA HDD) and created a 37GB partition for Ubuntu, as well as a 3GB swap file. I installed the boot loader on the Ubuntu partition. But BIOS doesn't recognize that the drive has separate partitions, and I can't boot into it from Windows either. I know I didn't modify WinXP's MBR, but should I have? I didn't know where it was.
I booted into the LiveCD again, and went into the disk manager. I Edited the Ubuntu partition and saw a checkbox that said "Bootable". I checked it and hit apply, hoping that might do it. I waited twenty minutes and the little circle was still spinning with no indication that it was actually doing anything or any warning of how long it would take, so I rebooted. Still no luck.
Someone told me that Ubuntu sometimes won't be bootable if you have both SATA and PATA drives in the system, which I do (although both XP and Ubuntu are on the same, SATA drive) and gave me a page that told me to use Grub4Dos. I fiddled around with that, only to come onto the Ubuntu website and find out that the page they gave me was outdated, before Ubuntu used GRUB2.
I would update the bios of my asus with this utility [URL]. Do you think I can use that under wine?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI purchased a book about Linux called the Linux Starter Kit. It came with a full install disc. The disc is labeled: Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, Bootable & Installable LiveCD.
After playing with the thing for a while, I decided to take the plunge and install it on my Dell Inspiron laptop. I went through the entire install. Everything worked fine. I shut the computer down.
The very next time I turned on the computer I got the message "BIOS does not find a bootable source."
Right now, the laptop is a big paperweight--unless I either learn how to get Ubuntu to run installed so I can do real work with it, or reinstall XP.
I'm having some issues getting Ubuntu to boot. I've installed it a bunch of times before, but dual booting and not. Right now though, I'm having issues installing it along with Windows 7, on separate hard drives. Here's my current configuration:
60GB SSD with windows 7
500GB HDD, NTFS, windows 7 data
I bought a 1TB HDD that I want Ubuntu on, but I only want Ubuntu to use 100 GB. I want the other 900GB for Windows 7. So, I put in the Ubuntu CD, chose to edit the partitions manually in the 1TB HDD, created a 100GB ext4 primary partition for linux and a 2GB swap partition, leaving the other 900GB unallocated. Ubuntu seemed to install fine, said it succeeded, and asked me to reboot. When I did, however, my computer boots straight into Windows (no GRUB screen at all). I've tried changing the boot priority to all three of my installed drives from BIOS and tried putting GRUB on both my SSD and 1TB HDD.
i just downloaded Ubuntu10.10,i used to burn the .iso file to a cd and then boot using the CD. recently my cd/dvd writer crashed and i was wondering could i boot from my pen drive in such cases,i also prepared a bootable pen drive but in my BIOS settings there is no option visble for such booting.
View 8 Replies View RelatedThe brand new MEMOREX 24X Lightscribe DVD player(SATA) is not detected by my UBUNTU 10.10 install (via USB stick LiveCD install). I know it should have worked out-of-the box, but it does not, dmesg or lshw command shows all other SATA connections ( 2 hard drives) , BUT the DVD Drive. The DVD drive is detected by the MSI BIOS, it is also fully functional in the dual-booted Windos 7 installation next to the Ubuntu 10.10, so I know the DVD player is ok. I have the latest B3 Stepping MSI P67A-GD65 motherboard with Intel i7 2600K cpu.

My computer has two 2TB drives and I want to mirror the partitions for redundancy For the Linux partitions (ie root and swap) I'll be creating raid partitions on each drive and using software RAID 1 to create md partitions of type ext4 and swap.
For the GPT's bios boot partition, am I also meant to use software raid ? Ie create a raid partition on each drive and use software RAID 1 to create a md partition of type bios boot ? Or am I meant to not use raid partitions and just create a bios boot partition directly on each drive ? In this case, will xubuntu's install process and grub tools ensure that both partitions contain the relevant grub files or do I have to explicetly do somthing to ensure that ?
I'm completely new to Fedora, though not to Linux (I'm switching from Ubuntu 9.10, now) and am having a few problems getting it installed. I followed the installation instructions, torrented the i386 DVD image, and put it on a 4gb USB drive using UNetbootin.
This is where my problems started. I restarted the computer, figured out which F key I needed to press to select the boot source, and then there wasn't a USB boot option. I've looked all over the place (using Google) and can't find out how to get the BIOS to have a USB option there-- I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A10, and that doesn't come with the USB boot option.
Now I'm trying to either figure out how to add the USB boot option or find another way to install. Burning a DVD (or CDs) doesn't work, as I don't have the resources to do so. I've seen somewhere that there's a way to install from a hard drive partition, but no instructions on how to do so (if someone could point me to a way to do that, it seems to be my best option right now-- if it even exists).
When I boot, I can grub into linux, but when I try to boot windows it doesn't work.

However, if I change the harddrive boot order in bios I can easily get back into windows by selecting that harddrive for the first slot.
However, I don't want to do this everytime I want to switch operating systems.
I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my desktop a month ago before I left my apartment for winter break. It worked beautifully for the week I used it, but now the computer won't boot. I'm using the ubuntu live cd right now to type this. I can't install it over my last hdd because apparently both of my hdds aren't bootable. I unplugged the computer for the month I was gone and the BIOS date reset to 2004. I'm not sure if that affected anything, whether I need to replace the CMOS battery? The computer was built in 2004 so I'm thinking the battery might be old. Basically the computer functions on the live cd, just won't boot from either hdd.

I tried to access the bios so that I can activate the Num-Lock during bootup but it's asking for a password. I tried my user password but that didn't work. How do I get that password? It's the only OS on the computer.
