i have managed to install ubuntu onto the USB and everything is working fine but the problem i am having is that i can't seem to access the bios on the netbook so i can't boot from the USB.i managed to get acess to the root files using this guide:url...all i need to do is figure out how to get access to the Bios so i can change the settings so it boots from USB.
View 6 RepliesI was given an old Compaq Presario computer; it had a 3.2GB hard drive with windoze 98 (put your crucifixes down, please) and a somewhat broken CD drive. I replaced the CD with a spare DVD ROM and the hard drive was replaced with a spare 250GB. I also removed the old ISA Fax/modem and installed a PCI network card. On top of this I also burned a copy of Xubuntu 8.04 on my main PC, for loading onto the old timer.
But then I came to use the old machine, the BIOS recognised the new DVD ROM, but no menu appeared, just the word "COMPAQ", any attempt to access the BIOS met with no response, (would not respond to "Del" or "Esc" or any of the "F" keys) the PC then attempts to boot from the hard drive (it had an old version of, what I think may be Ubuntu, as it comes up with a GRUB error 1!
I did notice the DVD ROM drive's light flash during the boot sequence. how to access the BIOS?It would be a shame for me to throw this old PC out! (I could always salvage the parts, I have 2 other motherboards and cases ready to make up some more computers, making 5 computers in my network)
I have an old computer, it came with Windows 98, later I updated it with Windows XP. XP ran slowly because of it's outdated hardware. Around this time I already had a new computer. I decided to install Ubuntu on it to muck around with. However, Ubuntu also runs slowly and I have a dual-booting computer. However, when I try to get into the BIOS of the computer and run the 98 disk, I can hit every button and BIOS will not load. Question: How do I reinstall Windows if I can't access the BIOS?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIm trying to test out Ubuntu while running Windows currently, once i got the ISO image installed into my USB device by following the steps on the Ubunto site, i rebooted my PC and tried to get into BIOS to change the setting to boot through the USB device.
but i was unable to open BIOS.
this is all i saw in the bottom right side of my screen as far as commands to open some thing before my PC would boot through my Cdrive and load Windows.

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I installed Ubuntu 8.04 with Wubi a while ago on my Toshiba Satellite A500/02j and recently uninstalled it (with Wubi). For whatever reason, Windows will not get rid of its bootloader and I cannot access my BIOS settings. I've tried spamming every function key that I have when it boots up but nothing happens (if I press ESCAPE when I'm at the boot menu it restarts). Any idea on how to get rid of it and get me my bios back?

I had the previous edition of Ubuntu Desktop Edition installed on my Acer Aspire 1 and it asked me to upgrade which I then confirmed and proceeded to do. When it was done it started up with the Ubuntu Netbook edition and Samba was removed.
How do I access a windows share with a netbook edition, because there's no places menu? What programs / addons do I need to install to be able to access windows shares when using the netbook edition?? Otherwise, how can I revert back to my previous edition of Ubuntu which I was happy with?
I set a domain name in the U 9.10 PC. It has Samba 4 installed because I needed to connect it to a W7. Do I need Samba to connect to another Ubuntu?

Has anybody been successful in getting a N130 with a RTL8192E wireless chip to access the internet? I�ve tried practically every suggestion quoted on this message board �downloading drivers, from Samsung and Realtek which won�t open also linux versions with the same result, trying the Ubuntu compilation of Wine etc, etc. Am about to give up, which is a pity, because the Netbook version Ubuntu is very user friendly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed 10.04 twice on 2 separate disks and it seems to have done something really strange to them. BIOS will not recognise them anymore, it just waits but they never come online. I have to unplug the disk completely for the system to boot.The first time I thought I'd just lost a disk, but when exactly the same thing occurred the second time around, it seems like too much of a coincidence.The installer didn't recognise the disks first time around as they were part of a RAID group previously. I did a dmraid -E -r /dev/sda to fix. After that just installed as per every other time I've used.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was wondering to restore on old laptop to working order. This laptop is an old early 2000's Sony Viao, which I found in the trash. Still powers on, and can boot the latest Ubuntu LiveCD. The issue is that it did not have a harddrive in it, and I really do not want to shell out money for a drive for a laptop this old, but would still like to bring it back into service as a thin client or general purpose web/email terminal. The BIOS does NOT have a USB boot option, and every tutorial I have seen requires that in order to boot Ubuntu from a USB stick (which is what I do have). What I am wondering is, is there any way to just keep the LiveCD in the drive and use that to boot the kernel, etc, and then have it look for the rest of the filesystem on the USB stick?

I am trying to try the OS by USB at the start into The BIOS If ya gets what I mean. It successfully loads The Options menu where you pick a choice like run from usb. So I run from usb and and it Loads Ubuntu just the purple background and the beans underneath it loading forever.

I am using Windows 7 Build 7100* with a computer I built a year ago. Intel e8400,6gb Ram, Asus P5Q SE Pro,and 100gb left on hard drive (30 Excluding cause I partitioned it.
when on it`s own but if i put another drive on the same lead either as master or slave it is then reconised? If i boot into a boot disk for windows even though i have no c drive some of the utilities work the same and reconise it hd tune for instance.Would it have some thing to do with the size of the drive? Im using a fujitsu pentium 4 board.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've played with Ubuntu, and a linux evangelist at work has talked me into trying it again.I happened to be wiping my machine, so my plan was to have Windows 7 and Ubuntu on one hard drive (100GB for Ubuntu, the rest for Windows), and the second hard drive for downloads, TV, films, etc.First I installed Windows, then I torrented the x64 Ubuntu 10.04 live CD iso, and burned it to a DVD. I booted from it and installed on the second partition, but I then found when I booted back into windows that my second hard drive wasn't there any more.
It didnt take long to work out that Ubuntu had installed using the second hard drive as a mirror. This is very confusing to me, as I've disabled RAID in my BIOS. I booted from the Ubuntu CD again and looked for options about this but didn't find any. Eventually out of frustration I just unplugged the second hard drive, but now when I boot from the CD to install, no hard drives show up for me to install to.
I'm trying to install ubuntu Linux on a Pentium 3 computer which does not support booting to the CD-ROM drives. What are my options on other ways to install? Could I either use a 3.5inch floppy disk to get it started or install on another computer and just switch the disk back over right before configuring all the hardware?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI know Ubuntu can be installed from a USB thumb drive but I have a unique problem. My CD drive in my laptop doesn't work any longer and I have no way to replace it. I know I can place Ubuntu on the flash drive but the bios in my laptop does not allow booting from USB and not ROM update for the laptop. So my question is, since this laptop does have Win7 on it, I can partition the drive to make room for a dual boot, but how do I get Linux on the new partition with out a CD Drive or bootable usb?

The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.
Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...
For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

To make this configuration, I have not enabled the raid from bios (since Ubuntu gave me problems) but I followed this guide [URL] (Official guides) to configure software RAID offered by ubuntu. Everything went ok and it works perfectly but when released the 10.04 and the system asks me to update, you think there will be some problem or leaving will be updated throughout unchanged RAID configuration?
I donwload the Ubuntu 10.04 *32bits ISO image, and i burned each image with diferent speeds. Then, i tried to install, appears the Language Selection screen, all good. then, the Localization screen, I select Colombia (I'm from Colombia), clic on forward and the mouse shows the "loading animation", but the PC doesn't do anything (I let it for 30 minutes). I tried with the 2 CD, but ever the same result. And in some times when I try to out and reboot appears an error, so I have to reboot manually (with a button ).
And other problem, is that my BIOS doesn't let me boot form USB, so I can't install form USB. The last opportunity, and tried to install it, upgrading from Ubuntu 9.10, but in the instalation it gave me some errors, and in the 80% (or something like that), appears a window asking me to install GRUB AND EVERYTHING FREEZES, so I had to rebbot manually, and reinstall Ubuntu 9.10.
