View 6 RepliesI seem to recall that there is a utility that sets up and manages completely different Wine installations for different programs. People use it primarily for games, so that the necessary tweaks and config options that work well for one game do not interfere with another.
I can't remember the name of it, though, and no amount of searching has reminded me.
I just assembled a PC
amd x3 64bit
4 GB RAM
ATI HD4350
Asrock MB
2 HD WD 320 put into RAID 0.
To make this configuration, I have not enabled the raid from bios (since Ubuntu gave me problems) but I followed this guide [URL] (Official guides) to configure software RAID offered by ubuntu. Everything went ok and it works perfectly but when released the 10.04 and the system asks me to update, you think there will be some problem or leaving will be updated throughout unchanged RAID configuration?
I'm looking for a way to make a bootable floppy that has drdflash.img, my flash utility and my bios file on it for a bios recovery disk. This is on a board that has a failed bios, so everything is pretty much dead (except for the humble floppy drive). I don't have a screen to work with so this floppy needs to be able to run the utility and automatically flash the chip for me. I've heard this is possible, but am unable to find clear instructions on how to do any of this. I know the basics of it is to copy the bios file and flash utility to a floppy along with a bootdisk that will run these things (sometimes the .bat file needs to be modified in order to do this automatically). So I've downloaded drdflash but it came as a .img and I don't think it can be 'just' copied to disk. I came across the 'dd' command but have also heard its nicknamed 'data destroyer' or words to that effect.

I updated Fedora 14 with the new kernel-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.i686 but when I reboot its rebooting automatically after showing the bios. What can I do now.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have inherited a Dell Inspiron 1300 with a 1.6 Ghz Celeron M and would like to fit a Pentium M 765 2.1 Ghz.
My questions are, will i need to update the BIOS after fitting it, or can i just plug and play?
If an update is not necessary, as such, will i see any kind of gains from doing so?
and if an update is necessary will i have to do it from a boot CD?
Also, as a side note, i plan to eventually boost the RAM and install a bigger HD, will a BIOS update be required after fitting either?
I just flashed/updated my BIOS using the MSI LiveUpdate4 utility under Windows 7. Everything worked the way it was supposted to as far as I can tell. Except that I can no longer boot up under Ubuntu. Windows XP and Windows 7 both boot up fine.
I get the error message:
Quote:
Mount of filesystem failed
A maintenance shell will now be started
CONTROL+D will terminate this shell and continue
Give root password for maintenance
I never set a root password under Ubuntu so I can't do that. It also said after failing to accept my user/sudo password something about running Fsck manually. So I put in the Ubuntu installation CD and am running it live. It comes with Fsck but there are quite a few options and I don't want to choose the wrong one and end up loosing data.
I have recently installed ubuntu but the fan on my laptop isnt working,
the file to update the bios is an exe, so I installed wine, but when i used it, it gave me a erroe message about not being able to run a driver and so the exe doesnt run.
I have searched for the forums for how to run exe files but the responses seem a little confusing and very varied! probably because it is such a frustratingly frequent question that gets raised
also my laptop cant be on for very long without it shutting down from the heat so I am against the clock !

I have been told by the staff from supermicro to update my BIOS, but they only have .exe to update. I ask them if they can help me to update my bios from Centos, and this is what they said
You can use RHEL driver: [URL] use same kernel driver for CentOS as RHEL. I'm really new with Centos OS, can you guide me on how would I be able to update my software via RHEL Driver? I see alot of RPM and images.
I installed REL 5.5 on this Dell laptop (originally win 7) and everything works ok except when i get to the login GUI the LCD brightness (or lack of) sets to it's lowest so i have to click the f5 button to brighten the screen. If I log out, the LCD resets to the dimmest setting (can hardly make out the login GUI) and again I have to click on f5. I believe I need to update the BIOS but I don't know how. The BIOS update I dound on-line if a xxx.exe file.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a bit of a weird problem, I have updated the BIOS for my motherboard (MSI K9A2 Platinum V2) to version 1.B which updates the CPU AGESA code. After the update I was unable to properly shut down linux (gentoo linux 64 bit, kernel 2.6.34, kde 4.4), when I try to do a shut down (tried it from kde and from the command line as well with the same result) the computer shuts down but then it starts up again, only this time the keyboard doesn't work. I think that somehow, the way the pc shuts down has changed (maybe linux is sending the wrong commands in order to shut down) because from windows 7 I can shut down the pc properly.
I have tried to recompile the kernel (I thought that maybe I forgot to add support for some ACPI, APM or CPU options that could affect the shut down procedure) but with no luck.
I use Debian 7.7 x64 and after BIOS upgrade my sound card not worked . I posted details information here :

But...This seems to be way harder than it should be. I'd be great if motherboard manufacturers could provide bootable iso images with all the tools to do the job without us having the build these ourselves...
Anyway, how do I go about creating a freedos bootable CDR under Kubuntu that is BIGGER than 1.44 MB!
My image file is 1MB already. The flashing program 32KB. I tried the methods from the various forums and just couldn't get them to work. Either ran out of space, or all the links to fdos were broken.
By the way, [url] doesn't seem to be right anymore and thats where everyone is pointing. I would probably have had this sorted if I could have the 2.88 MB image, but all I can find is a 1.44MB image and I have now idea how you can grow that to a bigger one. Why be stuck with 1.44MB? are we still in the 1990's ?

I found it is impossible to format partition during Ubuntu 10.04 installation.
My storage configuration is as following. 1TB (500GB X 2) AHCI RAID 0 (it is said fake raid) and covers below 4 partitions.
/dev/mapper/pdc_dgbbagea1 9621688 5872752 3260168 65% /
/dev/mapper/pdc_dgbbagea4 945587172 95673304 802259056 11% /home
/dev/mapper/pdc_dgbbagea3 9698380 1363364 7846240 15% /opt
Partition 2 is swap partition and root partition is ext3 original.
Since there is no enough space for upgrading, I try to format root partition and install a complete pure new OS. After I booting up system from Live or Alternative disk, I try to switch root partition from file system ext3 to ext4 and format it. However, Formating process always get failed after couple trying. Even I quit installation and use tools "Disk Utility" to check and adjust partition information. It reports device is busy.
