Ubuntu :: Display Driver Warning When Upgrading To 10.04 LTS?

planning to upgrade to the next LTS version i.e. 10.04. Have already applied all the updates and got the system up-to-date prior to upgrading. But when the upgrade starts I get the following message: Upgrading may reduce desktop effects and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs.This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardware in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
Do you want to continue ?Obviously, I clicked on NO and got out.What gives ? How come an upgrade is supposed to DEGRADE performance ? What kind of upgrade is that ? Also what is the implication for me ? Will I have to happy with 8.04 forever ?The machine in question is a Toshiba Satellite A100. I use GIMP quite a bit on it, so problems with graphics intensive applications is kind of worrying.What am I supposed to do ?? Upgrade anyway or stick with 8.04 ?

I've manually installed the latest NVIDIA display drivers from the website (newer than the restricted driver package that came with 9.10). When there is a new Linux kernel, or a newer Ubuntu version, will I need to uninstall that driver before upgrading? Will having this driver cause any special installation issues during upgrade (such as the need to reinstall the driver after upgrading)? I am using 9.10 through Wubi.

Acer veriton 5000 pentium4 1.7mhz 2Gb ram. double booted with win2k.I had no trouble upgrading from Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.04. For some reason 9.04 would not upgrade to 9.10 so I installed from disc, with minor hics. Now works well but randomly hangs with no warning and I have to switch-off and restart to continue. Very annoying. I do not get any error alert it just hangs and when rebooted carries on quite unperturbed.

When I become root and try to run gedit, I get the error:

This does not happen from my user profile....xhost + actually solves the issue....so I guess I just need to add the host root to the list of hosts allowed to access the x server...
I try xhost +root......but that does not work....

I was running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick with no big problems till last 3 days ago.
The update manager checked some updates to install and after installing them, I had no graphic desktop any more. Only the command line.

For example, the gparted application menu item doesn't work; using it means that there is almost no filesystem support. The only way to get it to work is to open a terminal, run 'su -', and then open it from there.As another example, I tried creating a nautilus script to open files as root with a command like this:

I attempted to install ubuntu 10.10 (64x) on to my Dell Inspiron M5010. it booted to cd, and got to the main menu. i clicked install ubuntu, and it thought for a little while, then turned to a black screen and it had a cursor in the top left that blinked. it didnt do anything for a while. wouldn't let me type or anything.
my brother said it might have been the cd, so i made another one. same thing happened. i assumed ubuntu 10.10 (64x) didnt like my computer, and i gave up. until, i attempted to install an earlier version of ubuntu. I managed to get ubuntu 9.04 (64x) installed on to my Dell Inspiron M5010 with no problems. now here is where the problem lies...
i went to upgrade ubuntu 9.04 to the next avail (ubuntu 9.10) and the updates went smoothly. but when the upgrade was finished and the computer restarted, after booting the computer wouldnt show any display. but i could tell ubuntu was okay because even though i couldnt see, i logged onto my user name. so ubuntu works, it just doesnt have a display.
so i reinstalled 9.04 (64x) that way i would be able to get some insight on this situation, and maybe make some changes before i upgrade again. because ultimately i want to have Ubuntu 10.10 upgraded on here.

I'm trying to install Fedora10 on my new desktop. It has Windows 7 beta on it and Vista. It starts up fine and I select install. For some reason my wired usb keyboard will not respond unless I press the caps lock button while it loads the begging. (I don't know if another button will work, ive only used the caps button since i can see the light come on) once it loads i skip the disk check and anaconda runs, i get the warning (mini-wm:1462): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :1 .

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop and have tried booting the ISO from a USB stick and also installing it to my HD with Wubi.Unfortunately my experience hasn't been any better than when I tried Ubuntu 8.10When booting the Live iso from my USB stick, my display goes into sleep mode (IE is receiving no signal) from the momentUbuntu begins booting until eventually the desktop appears several minutes later. If I was the average punter I would probably have assumed nothing was happening and rebooted.
As I have some experience with Linux (barely), I thought to try Ctrl-Alt-F1, which brought the monitor back to life and showed the terminal. As soon as I switched back to the main window (Ctrl-Alt-F8 I think) the display went back into sleep mode.Once it had booted, I did "sudo apt-get update", which worked and then "sudo apt-get upgrade", which did a lot of updates and then sent my monitor back into sleep mode, requiring me to reboot!When I tried to boot the Wubi install, again the display went into sleep mode as soon as Ubuntu started booting but this time the desktop never appeared and after about 5 minutes I rebooted.My motherboard is a Gigabyte MA780G-UD3H and I'm using the onboard HD3200 IGP and a Phenom II X3 720 and 4GB DDR2 1066Mhz RAM.

Recently I upgrade to the latest Nvidia driver for Linux. I checked that it was compatible with my Ubuntu 10.04 x64 system and my geforce gt 220 graphics card. I decided to go with the newest beta ver 260.1904. Installation went well, better actually than other times I tried to install the newest driver from their site. After installation was finished I restarted and let my system load up. As soon as it got past the ubuntu logo, the screen just went blank as if there was no signal.
I determined that everything but the display was working. When I pressed ctrl-alt-F1 the numlock light turned off (this usually happens) and was still toggle-able. When I went through the other x-servers (ctrl-alt-(F2-F6)) the light went out but could be turned off and on by hitting numlock. When booting in from recovery mode, the screen displayed up to the point where it would show recovery options with no noticeable error showing before the screen turned off. This is what worries me the most.I don't think it is my Xorg.conf because I replaced with a backup and still have the same problem.Does anyone have any ideas about why this is happening or how I can at least see the terminal. As a side note, its definitely not the card because the card worked fine before, works in windows and live cds, and I tried with an older nvidia card and had the same problem.

when i ran an upgrade in squeeze, there was an updated virtualbox package.When the upgrade of virtualbox finished, I got a warning like this one "insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (1) of script `vboxdrv' overwrites defaults (0 1 6)."From my understanding, this is not critical by any means, but I would like to know a little about why this happens and if there's something you should do when it does.By the way, I get virtualbox from the "virtualbox.org" repository for squeeze.

using Ubuntu 10.10 amd64, my older NVidia card suffered a hardware failure last week, and so I replaced it with an NVidia GTS 450.
As the driver that was previously in use was nvidia-173, at the next boot with the new card the X server didn't start. I got to the text console, where the /var/log/Xorg.0.log had the message that the GPU/chipset is unknown to the driver. (well, ok )
Some web searches revealed that the chipset GF106 of the GTS 450 is only supported by the NVidia 260.19.12 driver, which is not in the Ubuntu stock repositories, so I followed the instructions at http://halvar.at/blog/?p=258 to install the latest driver from the PPA repository:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-current
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude full-upgrade
In short, although all of the above worked fine, the problem is that even after a reboot, the system still uses the nvidia-173 driver (according to Xorg.0.log, and starting X still fails).
Before I tried the above, I also tried
sudo aptitude install nvidia-current
alone, in order to get the latest driver that is in the stock repositories, but the result is the same in both cases.
What do I have to do in order to activate the nvidia-current driver (either stock or from the ppa above) instead of nvidia-173??
I tried to modify the proper blacklist file in /etc/modprobe.d/... (sorry if the file names are slightly wrong - I'm typing all this from the top of my head, as the affected Ubuntu system has no graphics, and thus no graphical browser etc. ), but then there is the error:
"Error: API mismatch: the NVidia kernel module has version 260.19.12, but this NVidia driver component has version 173.14.28 ..."

I've recently installed Fedora 14 (x86_64) on my Alienware m15x laptop which has a NVIDIA GTX 260m onboard. Now I have followed leigh123linux's guide to installing those drivers on F14. The installation is a success and everything seems to be in working order, until the system randomly logs the user out and/or restarts the session with no warning. The screen goes black and the nvidia logo appears and then its back to the login screen again. This can happen many times with no apparent stop insight. This does not happen with the default F14 drivers that come with the installation, I have tried several re installations of the Fedora OS and several re installations of the NVIDIA driver, i still have the same problems.
