Dec 21, 2010I have been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 UNR on my netbook, but it hangs up on boot menu and BIOS and never loads when trying to boot it. I have been using "Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.9" and the .iso to try and it won't work. Is there any other methods I could try or a different program used to write to USB on Windows 7?

Jan 18, 2011I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Sep 13, 2010after messing with fstab + mtab, my aspire one netbook completely failed , so i rebooted using a live USB. My desktop and default settings were restored. When i tried to install firefox 3 (default browser is firefox 2 ), yum hangs and refuses to do anything. I tried deleting and reinstalling yum, and it was mostly successful until i tried the "make" command which according to bash does not exist. how to install make without using yum?

Mar 4, 2010I'm trying to upgrade my netbook (sylvania meso g) from ubuntu 8.04 to ubuntu 9.10 i downloaded the ISO downloaded the usb creator so that i could put it on my thumb drive, create the ISO and reboot with my freshely made ISO thumbdrive. When i reboot i get to the install screen select install and my netbook reboots and starts the process all over again without 9.10 ever being installed. When i select help i get the install screen but if at the very tipy top of my screen you see a 1/2in section that i cant read because it so small for help screen.

Dec 2, 2010I downloaded the iso from the site and followed the instructions making the usb bootable with the universal usb installer and it simply will not boot. (and yes I did change my boot priority to usb in bios) when I restart the computer it just says "SYSLINUX 4.02 2010-07-21 EDD Copyright (c) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al" I aslo tried making the boot usb with lily and the same thing. is the iso from the site bad? has anyone else encountered this?

Apr 5, 2011I tried for at least 4 hours last night and I could not get Ubuntu to install on my Acer Netbook. I used a 4GB Sandisk pendrive and changed the BIOS so the netbook booted from the pendrive, but all it did then was go to a black screen with white letters across the top saying Syslinx and a bunch of info kinda like copyright info.

Oct 3, 2010I used unetbootin to make a bootable usb with PeppermintOs and then reset the BIOS to boot from 'removable'.
It would not boot - went straight to the (grub?) menu offering mint, and mint safe recovery which is from the hard drive.
First USB did not work, so bought a new one (4gb) and that did not work so borrowed a 1GB from a colleague. This did not work either.
I have tried two different ISOs (having done the MD5sum on them as directed).
I have tried fat 32 and ext formats (using gparted to format it as I don't know any other way) and from there I can see that it says boot, lda).
When I disabled HDD from BIOS, the USB was read but then the message was that no boot device found, replace with proper boot device.
I also tried using the start-up disc creator.
Each time I have tried it on my desktop PC too, having set up the BIOS and I haven't been able to boot with them there either. I know that the netbook will boot from USB as that is how Mint 9 got installed on it.
In desperation I even tried creating the USB from windows. Even that didn't work.
Whilst I have a working copy of MInt 9 on the netbook, this is not vital, but I so want to try peppermintOS on it.

Jan 23, 2011I have read the sticky and taken the quizzes, even installed ubuntu, mint, and fedora. I am looking for a distro for an older (4+) years E-machine PC. All I really want it to do is play Netflix online, and movies I have stored to an external hard drive. Maybe some torrenting and VERY light document work. I want it to be fast, and stable. Not bloated with all kinds of stuff I don't need like Ubuntu and mint, or crash like fedora every 20 mins.

Jan 12, 2010i was in the process of trying to put the latest version of netbook remix on a flash drive (2gb Kingston), but failed mid-process. I had forgotten to format to FAT32, and thus ran into problems in the middle. I'm now left with a flash drive that is partially written to, and completely write-protected. And I can't get rid of anything on the flash drive. Nothing I've tried (Killdisk, re-formatting, MS-DOS) has helped me erase the flash drive permanently (every time I try Windows returns the message that the device is write-protected). Neither can I re-run the USB installer, which I downloaded from the pendrivelinux folk.
Either in erasing my flash drive completely, and starting again -- or in re-doing the making of this flashdrive into a boot disk for the netbook remix version of ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Sound On EMachines Notebook?
Mar 13, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 10.4.2 on a M622 eMachines notebook. I have no audio what-so-ever even after installing an ALSA mixer and updating everything. I can control every option as if the sound drivers were functioning fine. I've made sure nothing is muted and I've checked the headphones as well. What's strange is that the microphone input works and I'm able to record with sound recorder (according to the audio in level meter). The only thing I can think of is that the wrong drivers are installed but I'm not sure how about changing them or what to change them to. Here is a copy of my ALSA report:

Hardware :: Old Emachines Does Nothing Except When The Power Button Is Pressed?
Jul 1, 2011A friend of mine has an old emachines with XP on it and at first it would complain it had to test the disk and turn off in less then a minute. Now it won't do anything except run the power supply and cpu fans while the start button is pressed. I checked for power on the blue , purple ,red and orange wires while 14 and 15 were jumped on the power supply. There are no lEDs on the board and no beeps. I disconnected all the peripherals also

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Or Install Will Not Run On Old EMachines Desktop?
Jul 11, 2010I'm attempting to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's old desktop. Her gateway laptop's motherboard just died on her, and until we can figure out a real solution she's using this old desktop that was running Windows XP. It was her parent's and it's an eMachine. So, meh. It's whatever.
I have an Ubuntu disc from Canonical and one from burning the .iso image. I've been fighting with it all evening trying to just get the thing to boot. It starts up, shows a purple screen with an Ubuntu logo on the bottom. If I don't hit Enter it will go into a crazy cycle of black screen command line things. It says various errors, but moves too fast for me to see anything that is actually happening. However, if I do hit Enter it takes me to the "Try Ubuntu without installing, etc." screen.
No matter what I hit from the selection, it goes to the black screen with random command line entries floating about. Various error, various actions being done. If I hit to run as Live CD or Install it, it will eventually stop and say "Welcome to Ubuntu! *insert website address here*" and give me the chance to type in commands.
ONCE during the power on/power off cycles of me fighting did the Live CD actually run. It ran nicely, and I clicked the icon to install Ubuntu and it got to 49% complete and said there was an error with the disc. I installed Ubuntu on my desktop last week with the same disc flawlessly. It ran with the real Ubuntu disc, the burnt ones do nothing.
I could tell you system specs but Windows was erased during the Live CD stint and there are no stickers on the front to tell you. But I can crack it open and look if needed.

Mar 22, 2010I am running the 64 bit ubuntu 9.10 and cannot connect to the Internet. Everything appears to be working (and recognized) yet no connection. My Atheros eth0 (wired) works all the time but my eth2 (wireless Broadcom wireless does not under Ubuntu Linux) everything works well under Windows 7 (dual boot). Using WEP security. Shouldn't eth1 be the next scheme after eth0? Would eth1 be controlled by my wireless switch whereas eth2 not?

I) Just started Computer normally, using new Kernel and 11.04 then the screen became black as before. Waited until Harddisk (Light) wouldn't work too much and boot seemed to be over.
II) IN BLIND FLIGHT (without seeing anything, since screen is black):
1) opened the Terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F2
2) typed my "Username" (enter)
3) typed my "Password" (enter)
4) typed "sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=30" (enter)
5) typed my "Password" (enter)
III) Now it is not really satisfactory to do this over and over again each time restarting my computer. Is there any way to use a batch or use the grub to setpci ? I'd like to install 11.04 with an USB Stick on a similar computer - how do I setpci there?

After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

Apr 30, 2010I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?
