General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Ubuntu :: Installing Java VM And Making It Available To Other Programs?

Jan 31, 2011

I'm trying to install a program which requires Java VM. The installer is a install.bin file, coming with a eclipse folder; in this folder, you can find a "jre" directory. I also installed Coconut Java virtual machine, as well as OpenJDK Java 6 runtime environment. However, I still can't install the program. Executing the installer gives me this error message:

Code:
Preparing to install. Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive. Configuring the installer for this system's environment. No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH environment variable. You must install a VM prior to running this program. I think I should make Java VM available to the installer somehow, but I don't know how. I tried searching online but couldn't figure out the answer. Please help.

General :: Can Specify The Path To Libpcap When Configuring/making/installing

Dec 9, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.1 and am trying to get packet capturing working for my Bluetooth dongle using hcidump. From what I've read, libpcap must be compiled to enable Bluetooth sniffing and given that hcidump isn't finding a single packet, I'm guessing the version Ubuntu has installed for me isn't compiled with bluetooth support. So I downloaded a newer version of libpcap and installed the bluez header files. Configured libpcap and it gave a "Yes" for bluetooth support. It is now installed and sitting in /usr/local/lib/. Now I'm trying to compile hcidump to use this lib rather than the system default but I can't figure out how...I've read that GCC can be passed the -lpcap flag to set the path but I haven't figured out how to do this.

Server :: Making A Minor Server For An Mmorpg Game That Will Run In House Network Only?

My Computer options arent great, but i am going to be starting the process of switching all the computers in my house to linux, i wanted to see if i could make a server to connect all of them for file sharing, but mostly for world of warcraft in the house.it would only be 10 computers accessing it at once. i would basically want to know what the best form of linux would be, the programs id need to have, if it could be done on a desktop based machine, or if id have to use my server. if i would need different hardware or if the linksys hardwired router going to be enough connection. i guess the filesharing would be more the pressing need, especially if it is possible to create a server and convert the connected computers to linux through use of the server

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing My Sql Server ?

There are no .exe files which you just click on and then follow the instructions like windows. I'm having troubles installing my sql server. I need to install mysql-5.1.50-linux-i686-glibc23.tar.gz. The website is [url]. I tried some commands in the terminal but it's of no help.

I also need to install earlier versions of firefox (at least before 3.6). So I downloaded 3.5.13 from the mozilla website but have no clue on how to install it.

Ubuntu :: Making More Use Of The Server?

Sep 26, 2010

I'm running relatively overpowered server right now, that all it really does is host files and download movies/music that I might enjoy. I'm just seeking to expand it's capabilities to make life in the house more simple. The first thing I'd like to do is create a kind of automatic grocery list generator concept. Here's how I envision it working.

We create a list of recipes for meals we enjoy, specifically an ingredient list. From this list, we create bi-monthly meal lists; what do we want to have for the next two weeks. The server chews through the two lists, compiles a list of ingredients and how much of each we'd need.. and emails this off to our smart phones for us to refer to while shopping. What equipment do I have? I have a headless Ubuntu server running 10.04 and administered via a GUI and NX Client. Two blackberries (both 9700 Bolds) as portable smart clients that would need to at least receive the list, tho ability to add in would be great.

Home network is a mix of wired and wireless, so no issues there for connectivity. So why post this here? Because I'm at a loss as to the software/configuration part. Doing an automated email daemon is easy to send the list out. And a list of recipes or such is easy to get (dozens of cookbooks in the house, plus a small army of them available online).. the issue I'm having with is how to create/manage the database. I'm not familiar with SQL or any database programming at all. Is there something akin to this already in the repositories? Or is there someone who could point me in the right direction so I can do this?

Installation :: Log Off All Steps When Installing Ubuntu Server?

Jun 13, 2010

I'm about to install Ubuntu Server 10.04 on my home server. I have looked around, a lot, without finding a nice way to record or log all the steps of the installation.

I see two general paths of how my problem might be solved:
Is there any installation log file which I could look in to see which options I choose? It would be best if it included all steps, including partitioning and, in my case, setting up an encrypted volume with a KVM-volume inside it.
Are there any ways to record the installation or take screenshots of it? It's done using the console (with no X window system available). Maybe fbgrab could work, but I do not know how to make it available during the installation.
I could also use a pen and paper. But that is error prone as I do not have the patience to write everything down. It's my last resort though.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 10.04 Server On A Working 10.04 Workstation?

May 21, 2010

I have a 64 bit Dell laptop happily running 10.04 32-bit and Windows 7 booting with GRUB. I want to also install Lucid server on a spare 20GB empty partition and I would like to have Lucid server available in the GRUB menu along with Lucid 10.04 and Windows 7.

I don't want to blow away what I already have working and last time I booted from the server CD to try to install it (9.10), it didn't look as easy as when I installed workstation. Will an install of Lucid server gracefully and safely allow itself to be put on a spare partition and install itself in GRUB or so I need to do this manually? If I lose my Lucid workstation install, I am in trouble.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu Server 10.04LTS on an IBM x3650 server (Model 7945 K2G). The install CD cannot find the drives, so I cannot continue with the installation. Manually selecting mptsas as the storage driver doesn't work either.I have tried various permutations:

1. 64 / 32 bit Ubuntu Server

2. Using weBIOS to configure a RAID0 redundant virtual drive or not

3. Loading BIOS defaults or messing with most of the related settings

This particular server makes use of the ServeRAID M1015 controller (based on an LSI SAS2008 device).

Ubuntu Servers :: Making A Samba Server With LDAP Authentication?

Oct 24, 2010

Making a Samba Server with LDAP authentication. Will post as I go along. Found these sources, anything/hiccups I should know before jumping in? Figure would follow the official documentation then check the others for comparative errors.

https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/server...ap-server.html
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/server...amba-ldap.html
http://tuxnetworks.blogspot.com/2010...cid-short.html

Also Do other computers that want access to server also need samba installed (or just client)?

The server is 10.04 and my proposed client is 10.10, does this create problems?

Do I need to use ACL? I see them only in certain places.

Using xfce after Ubuntu install, not sure if this matters.

If it's possible, I'd prefer X server not to listen at all (and communicate through other IPC if needed), is there a way to make it not listening at all? -nolisten flag or something like that? (and do it automatically, every reboot). Also, Is there a way to make X server bind to 127.0.0.1(localhost) instead of 0.0.0.0(generic interface)? It should be in one of the configuration files or the start-up command to run X.

Slackware :: Making Desktop Into A Functioning Web Server

Feb 26, 2011

I would like to try making my desktop into a functioning web server on the web, if this is possible. The plan is to have web pages attached to a database where data provided by the users will be stored and to have programs that will process this data to generate new pages or PDF reports. I plan to user FireBird as the database manager and build the front end with Lazarus, if possible. My desktop is a small Acer with a 1TB hard disk. At the moment it has 1 partition containing Windows 7 which I would like to keep, for now. My internet connection is a phone company supplied standard residential high speed. Here are my questions, if this idea is actually possible:How should I partition the disk or is a root and home partition OK? When I install Slackware, is there anything special that I must do? How do I actually let the web know that this server exists? Are there any Slackware specific sites where I can learn how to do this type of stuff?
