Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 10.10 Server 64bit Asking For ISCSI Volumes?

Feb 1, 2011

I'm trying to make a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 Server 64bit but is stuck with the Partitioning Disk part and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS provides the same error. The installation wizard gives me a menu:

This menu allows you to configure iSCSI volumes

CentOS 5 Server :: ISCSI Volumes No Longer Mount After Reboot?

Sep 22, 2011

We have a Centos 5.6 server mounting two iSCSI volumes from an HP P2000 storage array. Multipathd is also running, and this has been working well for the few months we have been using it. The two volumes presented to the server were created in LVM, and worked without problem. We had a requirement to reboot the server, and now the iSCSI volumes will no longer mount. From what I can tell, the iSCSI connection is working ok, as I can see the correct sessions, and if I run 'fdisk -l' I can see the iSCSI block devices, but the O/S isn't seeing the filesystems. Any LVM command does not show the volumes at all, and 'vgchange -a y' only lists the local boot volume, not the iSCSI volumes. My concern is that, the output of 'fdisk -l' says 'Disk /dev/xxx doesn't contain a valid partition table' for all the iSCSI devices. Research shows that performing the vgchange -a y command should automatically mount any VG's that aren't showing, but it doesn't work.

There's a lot of data on these iSCSI volumes, and I'm no LVM expert. I've read that some have had problems where LVM starts before iSCSI and things get a bit messed up, but I don't know if this is the case here (I can't tell), but if there's a way of switching this round that might help, I'm prepared to give it a go.There was absolutely no indication there were any problems with these volumes, so corruption is highly unlikely.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing On A Dual-boot With Lots Of DOS Volumes?

Feb 9, 2010

I have a DOS/Linux dual-boot system. After recently replacing the original motherboard (an Elitegroup P6VEM3, of all things!) with a salvaged Dell D300 motherboard, I'm preparing to replace the Red Hat 8 currently installed with a Ubuntu live CD that I've had for some time (but that wouldn't work at all on the old motherboard, for some reason) I have a question about the "partitioner" stage of the installer: I don't know what to do with my 5 DOS volumes. My hard drive is partitioned as follows (from the partitioner's report when I select manual mode; annotations in parentheses):

/dev/sda
/dev/sda1 fat16 57MB 33MB (C:, "DOS")
/dev/sda5 fat16 106MB 33MB (D:, "STUFF")
/dev/sda6 fat16 633MB 121MB (E:, "APPLICATION")

Debian Configuration :: ISCSI Connection - Attach To The ISCSI LUN

Jun 24, 2010

I have never done this before but stood up a new Debian (testing) x64 system. It only has 146GB available for RAID1 so I created a 500GB iSCSI LUN on my NAS device on the network and am really confused how I can attach my Debian to the iSCSI LUN I created. Right now the OS is installed all locally on the machine but I would like the iSCSI LUN to be the /home directory for mail storage. Is this possible or do I need to mount the LUN to a newly created folder / mount point that is locally attached?

Ubuntu Servers :: Installing RAID 10 Fresh Install 10.10 64bit Server On A Supermicro 6025B-T?

I have a client with a pair of Supermicro 6025B-T servers that he wants to have Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Server running on for VM/Cloud experimenting. He needs these to be set up RAID 10. I can go into the Adaptec utility and make the array and make it bootable and get to the point in the installer where it asks me if I want to use the SATA array - then it gets to the partitioning screen and the array is nowhere to be found.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub - Installing 10.04 64bit On An External USB Drive

Jul 15, 2010

The default (graphical) installer did not work on my PC (i7 quadcore 8 GB DDR3). I have installed Ubuntu using the alternative installer (Desktop, 64 bit) on my external USB drive. I installed grub on the MBR of the second drive (/dev/sdb) as I did not want to touch my (first) Windows disk. After reboot (chosing the USB drive as boot device, else Windows is booted) grub reports an error and enters the rescue mode. I tried all possible combinations of "root=(hdX,Y)" in grub.cfg to no avail.

I repeated the whole procedure but now disconnected the internal HD with Windows. Installation went smooth again (Windows disk was not seen this time), but after reboot (the internal drive connected or not) I again get (slightly different this time) grub error: can not find file.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Two NICs During An Installation From CD (one Network One ISCSI)?

May 10, 2010

Is it possible to install two NICs during an installation from CD? I tried and failed yesterday. The eth0 would have a static ip address 192.168.0.11 and would be used for Internet/network whereas eth1 would have a static ip address of 192.168.2.81 and would be used for connection to the ISCSI system (DROBOPRO). Oh yes, it's Ubuntu 10.04 Server version.

Install asks me to choose one of the two devices for configuration - I tried to be clever and set up one then the other but it didn't work, although the ISCSI subsystem was clearly working when I set up eth1 because the DROBO kicked into life as soon as I entered the IP address - communication was taking place. Thinking that my fudge had worked, I continued to complete the installation only to find that neither network interface worked on reboot.

I would like it easy enough so others can backup files without any terminal commands and such. What would you suggest? CIFS? RAID? iSCSI?

CentOS 5 Server :: Create GFS Shared Storage Without SAN/iSCSI

I built a CentOS 5 Linux cluster with GFS storage using local RAID volume and share it with gnbd_export/import on two web-servers. Now I need to expand that storage to another servers local volume. I saw the picture in the manual, but I don`t know, how can I create that scheme.

I can use gnbd_export on the second server and gnbd_import on the first. In that case I will have two volumes on the first storage and I can expand volume group, logical volume, etc on it.

Server :: ISCSI Failing At Reboot To Detect Mapped Volume

Sep 28, 2010

I am trying to connect the one of server RHEL5.4 to the IBM iSCSI storage. Server is equipped with 2 single port Qlogic iSCSI HBA(TOE). RHEL detected the HBA and installed driver itself (qla3XXX). I have configured the HBA ip address in the range of iSCSI host port of storage. Both of the HBA is connecting to the two different controller of storage. I have discovered the storage using command iscsiadm -m discovery command for both of the controller and it went through fine. But problem is whenever server is restarting if both of the hba is connected to the storage then server will not detect the volumes which is mapped to the server and then to detect the volume I need to run "mppBusRescan" and "vgscan" command each time. If only one path is connected it is fine.

Also when I telnet 10.1.1.25 4949 and run

Server :: Network Disk Mirroring Of >16TB XFS Volumes?

Jul 29, 2011

I'm setting up two media servers - one will be primary and the second will be the failover box if the first one dies. My original plan was to use Heartbeat and DRBD to replicate the first to the second, but it turns out DRBD has a limitation of 16TB per volume, and my RAID 6 is 30TB in size. I'm trying to figure out some options.

One is to split the partition into two, so it's under the 16TB limit of DRBD, share both partitions, and then use LVM to join them as a single volume at the OS level. I'm not sure what kind of performance hit that will make on read/write access since now it will need to go through LVM *and* DRBD.

Two is to use something like GlusterFS or XtreemFS. However, I am wary of both of those as the first is a FUSE-based system and isn't really tuned for performance, and XtreemFS is still kind of beta-ish.

Three is good old rsync, but that is a bit too asynchronous in my opinion. I'd like to be able to fail over virtually instantly and not lose any content. This is a production system and performance of the disk systems are paramount, followed by reliability.
