Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 10.04 Server On A Working 10.04 Workstation?

May 21, 2010

I have a 64 bit Dell laptop happily running 10.04 32-bit and Windows 7 booting with GRUB. I want to also install Lucid server on a spare 20GB empty partition and I would like to have Lucid server available in the GRUB menu along with Lucid 10.04 and Windows 7.

I don't want to blow away what I already have working and last time I booted from the server CD to try to install it (9.10), it didn't look as easy as when I installed workstation. Will an install of Lucid server gracefully and safely allow itself to be put on a spare partition and install itself in GRUB or so I need to do this manually? If I lose my Lucid workstation install, I am in trouble.

Ubuntu Installation :: Compile Errors Installing VMWare Workstation 7.1.0

Aug 19, 2011

I have played around with Fedora for a few years and recently switched to Ubuntu. I am installing VMWare Workstation version 7.1.0 from a retail packaged CD. When I attempt to install VMWare Workstation and VMWare Player I get the following error:

Aug 15 16:24:54.826: app-3078788800| Your GCC version: 4.5
Aug 15 16:24:54.837: app-3078788800| Your GCC version: 4.5

Aug 15 16:24:54.895: app-3078788800| Trying to find a suitable PBM set for kernel 2.6.38-10-generic.....
Aug 15 16:24:56.163: app-3078788800| Failed to compile module vmmon!

I tried installing the patch for kernal 2.6.38-8 found here - [URL] - but it did not resolve the issue. Is there a patch for kernal 2.6.38-10?

I also found this posting for the same problem: [URL]. I followed the following instructions as advised in the post . . .
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install make
sudo apt-get install gcc

Then enter:
uname -r

My kernel was: 2.6.38-10-generic
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic
Now run the vmware-install.pl script.

Everything ran without error. However, I continue to get the same error. Another post suggested uninstalliung and reinstalling the software, but this had no affect either. Another post suggested that after running the above update to them run the /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl script. However I do not seem to have the vmware-config.pl in my /usr/bin directory. I checked the various VMWARE directories in /etc and the /tmp/vmware-root directories but no vmware-config.pl

glxgears/glxinfo works on my fedora 11 linux workstation

glxgears/glxinfo does not work when I SSH in from my PC or from other unix workstations. I need this to work so I can do relatively low-powered graphics work on the workstation remotely.

Other x-windows graphics/programs work fine.

The error message is uniformly:

I didn't install fedora (our sysadmin did), but he is out of ideas as to why this isn't working.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Not Working: Natty Narwhal In VMWare Workstation

Jul 30, 2011

I started playing with Natty Narwhal (11.04) last week. I have a Toshiba Portege R700 laptop with 4GB of memory. Firstly, let me say that when I run 11.04 on the bare metal laptop (installed via WUBI) it appears to work flawlessly. That is, both the ethernet (hard wired) network and the wifi network work just fine. The networking problem occurs when I try to run 11.04 as a (Type 2) VM in VMWare workstation with an underlying o/s of Windows 7 Enterprise.

In this mode, the ethernet network works fine but the wireless network does not work. The o/s does not even see the wireless card. I have downloaded and installed about 216 MB of updates from the update center to no avail. I have "bridged" the VMWare "virtual switch" across to both the ethernet port and the wireless port (see below):Basically, it appears that the interface is not being presented to the VM.Also, of interest, Unity which works fine on the bare metal install does not run on the Ubuntu 11.04 VM.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install On Sun M40 Workstation ?

Aug 4, 2010

A few years back, Ubuntu announced a "partnership" with Sun Microsystems, and explicitly listed the Ultra 40 Workstation is compatible with the then current version of Ubuntu. I installed that version (8.04) on my Ultra 40 M2 workstations, and everything worked very well. I later upgraded them to 8.10 and then 9.04, with good results.

Well, now I'm trying to jump to 10.04, and I'm having no luck.

A fresh install seems to hang at GRUB (as near as I can tell.) I get a quarter screen of magenta (the top 1/4 of the screen turns magenta) and then ... nothing. Hang. I've tried re-installing with the full graphical install, and got this hang from the Live CD. Using the "alternate install" CD in text mode, everything seemed to install fine, but the first reboot hangs immediately.

Suspecting GRUB 2, I moved to another machine and decided to try an in place upgrade rather than a fresh install. I figured that the upgrade would retain Grub 1, and I'd have a better chance.

So far, "better" is a good word. Only a little better, though, unfortunately. The upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 seemed to work OK, but upon reboot, I got a message telling me that it was waiting for the partitions to mount. <ESC> gets you to a recovery console, which is great. I can mount all the partitions by hand, and they seem to mount, sort of. "df" doesn't see them, but you can access all files on all partitions, so they really are mounted. When you exit the recovery console, however, you go back to waiting for them to mount.

Have the changes to Ubuntu left the Sun Workstations behind? Do I need to switch to another distro, or put Solaris 10 back on these things? Or are we going to be stuck on Ubuntu 9.04 in our "Advanced Unix Lab?"

2) VMWare workstation sits on top of Windows 7, 64 bit. Am I best off with 64 bit Ubuntu or will the 32 bit install suffice ? I am not doing anything performance heavy with Ubuntu, I am just playing with it to become more familar. I've heard such great things.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install 10.4 On A Dell M4500 Mobile Workstation?

Jul 5, 2010

I have a brand new Dell m4500 workstation. Here are some hardware features:Core i7-820 processor4 GB RAM256GB Solid state diskNVidia quadro FX 1800M graphics cardWhen I try to run the 10.04 graphic installer (from a CD or from a USB stick built using pendrivelinux) I see all of the text information as it is loading (i.e. all the white text and dots and stuff) but then the screen just goes blank.

When I try to run the 10.04 alternative installer from a CD, I can install successfully, however when I boot into it, I get the same problem as the installer. I see a bunch of text as it's booting up, and then the screen goes blank. I figure this is a graphics driver issue, so I downloaded the NVidia drivers, and then tried to start the computer in "recovery mode" to get to a root shell and install the drivers. But after selecting "recovery mode", I again see a bunch of white text, and then I get a momentary (~0.5sec) view of the recovery menu (i.e. dpkg, root, netroot, xfix) or something like that. Then... surprise... the screen goes blank.I tried both the 10.04 64bit and the 10.04 32bit versions with the same results.

After installing 10.04, and after booting up with the blank screen, on a whim I entered my user name and password and happened to hear that familiar login sound... though the screen is still blank. I tried logging into the root shell from the "recovery mode" via memory (pressing down a whole bunch, and then up one), and then I tried to run the NVidia display driver installation by typing the installer name, and then by entering options based on notes I took when I ran the installer from 9.04... however since I can't see the screen there's no way to tell if that worked... and nothing has changed.I'm currently running 9.04 which is working moderately well, with the exception that the SDCard reader and the network card don't work. I'm using a USB network device for now. I don't know enough about linux to know how to diagnose this problem

Server :: Fdisk Does Not Like Md Devices On Machine Since Configured A Raid And Made Changes To Main Workstation

Mar 24, 2011

It's been a while since I configured a raid and have been making some changes to my main workstation/server.
fdisk does not like md devices on my machine... always says it has an invalid partition table. While this is said to be normal all over the net, I don't feel warm and fuzzy about that fact. What is best practice these days, to create a non-partitionable md device or a partitionable mdp device?

If I create a partitionable md device, I would imagine it would look good in fdisk. However, I am concerned about growing the array afterward. I would then have to grow the array, redefine the partition, and then grow the file system. The PITA factor goes up. Has anyone worked with both? Pro/Cons? My array was created with:

mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --force --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1

FYI: I have backups. I understand RAID 1 may be a better choice of raid level.

This at least showed the purpl-ish install screen. After I pressed enter over install, it went to the blank screen again. just black, nothing appeared.I'm not sure what the problem is. My laptop is fairly new, it shouldnt be having an issue to run it.I have 4Gb RAM, plenty of space on the hard drive, and a 1Gb video card...I have no clue what to do, as this is my first encounter with an Linux distro ever. help?
