Ubuntu :: Completely Deleting Files & Virtualbox OSX

Feb 27, 2010

It turns out I caught the Linux bug. I'm now completely obsessed with it. Most of the time if I can't get something to work I do a quick web search, and I find the solution to my problem in the first link or three. This is the exception. I wanted to install XP or 2000 using Virtualbox OSE just in case I needed to look up something on Windows or print something off (can't find any drivers for my Lexmark printer). I tried XP first and it gave me an error. Then I tried 2000. At this point I went to delete the program and try again. The first thing I tried was sudo apt-get remove virtualbox. Then when I re-installed it, I still had my settings and partitions on there. I then went to the add/remove programs. Same thing after the third install. I then went to the Synaptic Package Manager and clicked completely delete files (or however it was worded). After the install it still did the same thing as the previous times. When I try and load Virtualbox it says "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted.". Also sometimes my pointer will get locked inside Windows. How do I get out of that? The only thing I was able to find was hit CTRL + ALT + Back and it exits both Windows and Linux.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Windows XP Dualboot - Error Along The Lines Of A Missing/corrupt Hal.dll

Jun 30, 2010

So I have a single hard drive with two partitions, and I am trying to install a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, I am having an issue installing the Windows XP component.

I keep getting an error along the lines of a missing/corrupt hal.dll after the first restart in the install. This has happened every time I tried to install windows XP, from several different discs, all of which I have confirmed to work on another computer.

I have tried several things for fixing this, from repairing the MBR and boot.ini to replacing hal.dll from hal.dl_, and nothing works. However, Ubuntu 10.04 installs and boots properly.

What I can do to get Windows to install properly?

Ubuntu Security :: Main Encrypted LVM Not Accessible After Deleting A Different Encrypted LVM On USB HD

Mar 7, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 on my laptop with the entire 500gb setup as encrypted LVM. This has worked well for several months with no problems. During this time i have been backing up the data to an external usb drive (1tb) on a regular basis. The usb drive was not encrypted. So, I thought it would be a good idea to encrypt the backup drive too. I wiped out the backup drive and set it up as one large encrypted lvm and mbr. This seemed to work fine but immediately afterwards I decided to erase that and set it up as encrypted lvm guid instead of mbr. I couldn't delete it while logged into my desktop so i decided to do it from a bootable gparted usb stick. In gparted i erased the 1TB backup drive once again and planned on setting it up the way I wanted once I was logged back into my ubuntu desktop. Now I cant boot into my desktop with the following errors:

cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available b0d) does not begin with /dev/mapper/

Then after waiting for a few minutes I get an error followed by (initramfs)

When booting from a live version of ubuntu the 250MB boot patition is recognized and 500 partion is there but it is labeled as empty/unused.

Also, I did choose to use the exact same passphrase as what is used on the main bootable drive when I set up the encrypted partition on the external 1TB drive.

OpenSUSE :: Making A Bootable ISO From DVD For VirtualBox?

May 23, 2011

I started with a bootable Windows 7 Upgrade DVD. I tested the DVD by booting from DVD in a physical drive. The system put up a "press any key to install from CD/DVD" and it worked. Now, I attempted to make a bootable ISO for VirtualBox... To make the ISO, I used this:

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=windows7.iso bs=2048 conv=sync

which I've read will clone the DVD and its boot ability? Is this correct? When I start VirtualBox, version 4.0.8 r71778, I get the "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." The IDE Primary Master (CD/DVD) is set to see windows7.iso, so I suspect it sees the ISO, only it doesn't appear to be bootable. SATA Port 0 is set to Windows 7.vdi. Am I missing a step somewhere? The system is running openSUSE 11.4.

Ubuntu :: Installing Packages When Main HD/SSD Is Full?

Feb 21, 2011

I've been running Xubuntu 10.4 Lucid Lynx on a netbook. It's an EeePC 701 which has been upgraded to 2Gb RAM, but the only storage device is a soldered-in (why) 4Gb SSD. At present this prevents me from installing much software. I started a previous thread (link) in Absolute Beginner Talk which pointed me to portablelinuxapps.org, where I found a list of applications that were compiled to a single executable that could be run from any locaton (inc. USB drives): absolutely brilliant for openoffice and skype etc, but it's still a limited list of software.

So I was wondering if theres any possibility to install conventional packages in a way that uses space on a different drive (i.e an SDHC card in this case)? I'm open to the possbility that this may mean keeping the card in at all times. Alternatively, is it possible for an end-user to create the kind of self-contained executables found on portablelinuxapps.org, or can only the developer do it?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login Via Main GUI After Installing NX

Jul 18, 2011

First time poster, and a first time convert to using linux, have mainly been a Windows man but as a software dev beginning to broaden horizons using linux (and Eclipse is real fast in ubuntu!!) Anyway, my problem:
1. I have installed NX as per this form post: [URL]
2. I can log in via the tty consoles on the actual machine, and can still log in via the NX console (into a kubuntu environment), however, I am unable to log in to gnome or kubuntu via the main logon gui on the actual computer.
When I do attempt to logon to gnome/kubuntu the screen flickers and I return back to the main logon GUI.
3. I have since reverted the port 55555 changes to port 22 in /usr/NX/etc/server.cfg and /etc/ssh/sshd_config - I can still NX onto the box, but point 2 is still a problem.
Why I can't login via the main GUI?

Ubuntu :: Installing Gnome Shell Messed With Main System

This is my problem:I installed gnome-shell, it worked, I was impressed, I stopped using it When I stop using it, I found that it changed my system, for the worse These are the changes it made to my system:Startup services do not run, I have to run programs manually I cannot lock my screen, either by hotkey or the normal menu applet Totem no longer prevents the screen from going blank while playing

Its like some sort of system service is not starting, I'm sure there are other symptoms that I have forgotten. All of these problems are livable, but inconvenient. I should have known better than to mess with my system, but I wish I knew how to reverse it. Naturally I uninstalled gnome-shell but it did nothing.

Ubuntu :: Installing Java VM And Making It Available To Other Programs?

Jan 31, 2011

I'm trying to install a program which requires Java VM. The installer is a install.bin file, coming with a eclipse folder; in this folder, you can find a "jre" directory. I also installed Coconut Java virtual machine, as well as OpenJDK Java 6 runtime environment. However, I still can't install the program. Executing the installer gives me this error message:

Code:
Preparing to install. Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive. Configuring the installer for this system's environment. No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH environment variable. You must install a VM prior to running this program. I think I should make Java VM available to the installer somehow, but I don't know how. I tried searching online but couldn't figure out the answer. Please help.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Installing WinXP In VirtualBox

May 5, 2010

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I've also got my WinXP Toshiba Rescue CD which i'd like to install in VirtualBox but it just won't go past the 'unpacking' part. When it says that it's completed, the only option i have is clicking OK. Doing that just shuts down the VM then. And when I restart the VM, it just does the unpacking step all over again. Last year when I had a dual boot system (XP and ubuntu 8.10 i think it was), the installation went fine until I realized that my ubuntu partition was way too small. So I could not install XP in a VM. But it still got to the actual windows installation step. I'm still using the same PC the rescue CD came with.

General :: Can Specify The Path To Libpcap When Configuring/making/installing

Dec 9, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.1 and am trying to get packet capturing working for my Bluetooth dongle using hcidump. From what I've read, libpcap must be compiled to enable Bluetooth sniffing and given that hcidump isn't finding a single packet, I'm guessing the version Ubuntu has installed for me isn't compiled with bluetooth support. So I downloaded a newer version of libpcap and installed the bluez header files. Configured libpcap and it gave a "Yes" for bluetooth support. It is now installed and sitting in /usr/local/lib/. Now I'm trying to compile hcidump to use this lib rather than the system default but I can't figure out how...I've read that GCC can be passed the -lpcap flag to set the path but I haven't figured out how to do this.

So, Im trying to update to 3.2.2 but cant seem to find an easy way to do it. I downloaded the RPM for OpenSUSE 11.1 from Sun's website and when installing it I got errors about files conflicting with the previous version. So I ran a "zypper rm vbox" to remove the current one and then ran the RPM again and it seemed to finish the installation fine, I just cant find it to run it.I currently have the 2.0.6 version installed again just so I can use it... but now am back to trying to get 3.2 installed before looking in another direction.

Debian Installation :: Installing 6.x Into VirtualBox 4 With Ext4?

May 30, 2011

I'm not sure if this is a Debian question or a VirtualBox question, so I'm posing here and will likely pose it on the VBox forums as well. When I install Debian into a new VirtualBox VM, it always installs Ext3 as the file system. I've tried the Advanced installer, but there does not seem to be a way to specify Ext4 as the file system. My questions are:- Is Ext3 the default for Debian 6?- Can I specify Ext4 as the file system at install? Should I even care? I know Ext4 is faster, but would that performance boost be meaningful for a laptop/cloud user?I know I can convert from an Ext3 to Ext4, but that's clearly a lot more work than just installing it during initial setup.VirtualBox does support Ext4, as I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 with Ext4 and it boots and operates fine.

OpenSUSE :: Installing VirtualBox Guest Additions In 11.3 VM

Feb 28, 2011

I'm trying to install the Virtual Box Guest Addition for my openSUSE 11.3 VM, but I'm having some problems. The Virtual Box manual says I need to install the kernel-default-devel package, so I did that, but it also says :

Make sure that your running kernel (uname -a) and the kernel packages you have installed (rpm -qa kernel*) have the exact same version number. Proceed with the installation as described above. So I ran both commands and here is the output :

edgar@linux-t7uc:/> uname -a
Linux linux-t7uc 2.6.34-12-default #1 SMP 2010-06-29 02:39:08 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
edgar@linux-t7uc:/> rpm -qa kernel*

[code]...

the devel packages are version 2.6.34.7-0.7.1 and the kernel is version 2.6.34-12. How do I install the correct version of the kernel-default-devel and kernel-devel package with zypper? I thought maybe the versions could be compatible somehow, so I tried to install the Guest Addition and here's the result :

edgar@linux-t7uc:/media/VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.4_70112> sudo sh ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
root's password:
