General :: Making File Server With Web GUI Functionality

Jan 27, 2011

I had a external HD from Lacie that just made me mad because you could only log into it from a windows or mac machine. So I took the 250 HD out and through it in my P3 733Mhz Processor, 128 Ram Dell optiplex. Now My Lacie HD had a Network function on it where It had a webserver and a GUI to manage users to it. But it couldn't never get the HD to turn on for Network. It would only turn on when plugged into a USB. So I want to turn my Dell optiplex into a file server with web gui functionality. How should I start.

General :: Making Tar File From Folder - Unknown Option

Aug 6, 2010

I am trying to make my first tar file in linux. I am trying to make a tar file from a folder (with all subfolders and files) and using several commands I got several errors!

This is the tar usage:
tar [-]{txruc}[eONvVwAfblhm{op}][0-7[lmh]] [tapefile] [blocksize] [[-C directory] file] ...

Some of my attempts and responses:
tar -czf itic_glb_cognity-06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity/
response: tar: z: unknown option (not using 'z' again!)
tar -cf itic-glb-cognity-06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity/
response: tar: cannot stat itic-glb-cognity. Not dumped.

The last ones repeats for all the next attempts:
tar -cf itic-glb-cognity-06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity
tar -cf iticglbcognity06082010.tar.gz itic-glb-cognity/
(full path + name without spaces) tar -cf iticglbcognity06082010.tar.gz /epos/webbus/bea/user_projects/domains/itic-glb-cognity

For some of the above a 10kb file was created, where the expected file would be about 250MB. I dont think it has anything to do with the user's rights, because I think I have them all.

Debian Configuration :: File Access Logs - Functionality Like Already Built Into Samba?

Sep 7, 2010

wants some sort of logging capability on the system. to have a log of every change to every file, although that might be a bit unwieldy. perhaps a simpler compromise would be some way of monitoring a few specific folders, and tracking all changes to them, including the user that did so. Particularly important is that it should be possible to work with access through samba, as we want to track what users on the network are creating or changing files. Is there functionality like this already built into debian or samba? is there a useful additional app to gather this information? or am I going to need to be grep'ing log files to present something useable?

Sep 2, 2010

I'm trying to execute X server (automatically), which will not bind to 0.0.0.0 (port 6000) - meaning X server will not listen on generic interface. If it's possible, I'd prefer X server not to listen at all (and communicate through other IPC if needed), is there a way to make it not listening at all? -nolisten flag or something like that? (and do it automatically, every reboot). Also, Is there a way to make X server bind to 127.0.0.1(localhost) instead of 0.0.0.0(generic interface)? It should be in one of the configuration files or the start-up command to run X.

Ubuntu Networking :: Accessing Server With Built In VPN Functionality?

Aug 10, 2010

I've seen many posts about setting up VPN's but my doubt goes further. I just need access to the local network of my office from a Windows XP (which of course is outside the LAN). I would like this PC to have access to the whole LAN, but what I really need is it to access to an Ubuntu Server (e.g. 192.168.0.10). The router is a Netgear DG834, which has a built in VPN functionality. So, is it enough if I set it up? Do I need to install any VPN server in Ubuntu? What if I want to access to another computer in the LAN? Where should I start?

General :: Vmware Server 2.0.2 Installation On 12 - Making Sure Services For VMware Server Are Stopped

May 19, 2010

I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed

The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".

I tried this command and find the this message

[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler
"/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]

Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"

Ubuntu :: Making Booklets - Print Document To PDF File?

Apr 3, 2010

I've seen lots of threads about this with complex solutions using things like PSUtils etc. but nothing simple and easy. Is there an easy way to print to a document to a PDF file so that it is properly formatted to be printed as a booklet?

For example, a 12 page booklet made up of A4 folded in half to A5 -
1st page = 12 & 1
2nd page = 2 & 11
3rd page = 10 & 3 etc.

So that when it is printed double-sided it comes out as a booklet. The site at the following link does what I want perfectly if I upload the booklet in single pages format, but it would be nice to have a simple way to do it offline in ubuntu [URL]
