Upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, touchpad on my laptop stopped working, but i had my USB mouse so I upgraded to 10.4. After the reboot, both the USBMouse and touchpad no longer work, rendering my Ubuntu Installation a useless. Luckly I have OpenSuse installed on this laptop as well. I have a Gateway MP6954
View 1 RepliesUbuntu is perfect for me, except that i have to dual boot sometimes to windows 7 for the one application that wont run in a virtual environment (LockDown Browser, and occasionally onenote). Except, i cant find tablet control features in Ubuntu, to change input devices (the touchscreen is awful, but I cant turn off the option to use finger as an input device. Also, when i boot to windows 7, the mouse track pad/left and right click doesn't work (they work in Ubuntu)? The keyboard does, and so does my stylus (which I have to use as a substitute)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having problems understanding how sound capable devices are being used on my Ubuntu10.10 64 bit system. I have an ASUS A8V motherboard with on-board multimedia functions provided through the VIA V8237 chip. BIOS gives me the option to disable this functionality and I have set BIOS this way. I want to use an M-Audio 24/96 card for all sound processing.
However, in applications like Audacity the VIA chip functions are all available and can be set as recording and playback devices. The same is true in ALSA.
Why does 'linux' (I have no idea which part of the OS) ignore the BIOS settings?
Furthermore alsamixer always selects the 'default' devices. Where and how are these set?
<System><Preferences><Sound> hardware tab list 2 'Internal Audio' devices but no M-Audio device. What are these devices? Only 1 of them appears to create any output with the 'Test Speakers' tab. This confuses me completely because the speakers are connected only to the M-Audio card.
None of the profiles for 'Settings for the selected device' match the capabilities of the M-Audio card (1 set of stereo inputs and 1 set of stereo outputs). So where are these profiles coming from? Which do I select for the M-Audio card?
What do the Input and Output tabs in <System><Preferences><Sound> mean? Are these different to the hardware tab? The 'Output' tab lists2 devices for sound output: 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo, Stereo' twice. What devices are these ?
The issue I've been having is with Flash on websites; most notably, Livestream's Flash-based browser viewer, and Adult Swim's flash-based games. Clicking works perfectly fine, but the keyboard input is entirely disabled for the Flash area. Text boxes, or game controls, won't respond at all, even when everything else is still working.The only way to input any text into Flash-based text boxes is to write it somewhere else (Firefox's URL or Search bar, or in GEDIT), then copy+paste into the tect box (again, Ctrl+V won't work, only right-clicking and pasting will go through).
I've tried multiple versions of the Adobe Flash player, including the installer directly from Adobe's site, the adobe-flashplugin package in Synaptic, the flashplugin-installer package, and I believe I tried GNASH as well (although I'm not sure if that did anything).I haven't had a chance to attempt to downgrade either one yet, however, nor have I been able to test another browser.I've seen a few other issues of this sort pop up here before, but they've all either gotten no solutions, or they're a year or two old, or they're running into 64-bit-specific issues. Hopefully this is posted in the correct location, and fingers crossed someone has an answer (or better yet, a solution).
After returning from suspend to disk, RF devices (wlan and bluetooth) are disabled. Running lspci indicates that no wireless network device is available, and no drivers are loaded. Furthermore, the LED on the front of the laptop remains off - this is always on when RF devices are available. There is an Fn-F1 function key to toggle wireless, but this does not function to either enable or disable.
Rebooting the system does not re-enable the RF devices, and there is no option in the BIOS. The only workaround I have at present is to boot into windows vista and use the Fn-F1 function key. This pops up a small hotkey utility with the option to disable/enable the wi-fi and bluetooth (independently). Upon confirming the dialog, the RF device light immediately illuminates. Rebooting into fedora and wireless devices are working once again.
I am running kernel 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64, with the latest compat-wireless drivers. I can provide much more debug information (dmidecode, acpidump, boot logs, lspci etc...), I am just unable to determine what is relevant

I have a Samsung NC10 and want to use my built in webcam on TokBox. However, when I try to use it, my camera and mic do not work. TokBox gives be a "Devices Disabled" message. It says set to "allow" and click ok, but there is nothing to click. I also can't get the camera to work with video chat in Gmail.
I know the the camera works because I can get it to work in Cheese. The mic, I can't get to work at all. I have gone to the Macromedia site and set the settings to "allow", but still no go.
Both work fine in XP (I have a dual boot), so it's not a hardware problem.

Last weekend I did a fresh install of Natty into my new HD following the crash of my last one (hooray for periodic backups). I had no problems at all, my mouse and keyboard were working fine. The system was running without a xorg.conf file in /etc/X11.Then, I installed the restricted driver for my NVidia GeForce 8600 GT and rebooted, but the driver was not being used. I ran nvidia-xconfig as root, which created a xorg.conf file telling X to use the driver. Reboot, everything is working fine.
Now, this morning a few packages were updated, including xorg. The next time I tried to log in after this update, I found that neither my mouse nor keyboard were responding - I couldn't even switch to another tty or, indeed, do anything other than a hard reboot.I have a LiveUSB with natty and a partition running Sabayon Linux on another hard drive from which I can mess around in my Kubuntu partition. How do I fix this?
For some reason on any application that uses sound, but doesn't allow me to specify the input/output audio devices I don't get anything. I want all audio to go to my USB Headset, and not the onboard soundcard. To start off with, here's alsamixer: Here's a screenshot from Mumble (voice chat) that shows that I've set the USB headset device in there, and it works 100% fine on Mumble.

I have a remote control (imon --> Harmony) that acts like a mouse. My goal is to remove that feature. Iam using lirc with Linux input layer (/dev/input/eventX) because Imon driver doesn't work at all. To get Linux input layer to work you need to choose the imon device.

I have been using ubuntu 9.10 for about a week and have had problems with my keyboard and track pad on my laptop. I can navigate grub (I'm dual booting) but once ubuntu starts to load then I am unable to use my input devices. Even using cap locks doesn't turn on the corresponding light. As fa as I can tell it seems intermittent and I can make an STR.

When I am using GIMP, it will regularly stop allowing me to use my mouse or Wacom Intuos 3, forcing me to use my keyboard, but only within dialogs such as for scaling a layer, saving a file, etc. It's so flaky that the mouse/tablet will work sometimes and not sometimes, back and forth, within one "session" of using GIMP. It's driving me nuts. Sometimes I struggle with the keyboard (a struggle because it's indirect and sometimes counter-intuitive), other times I'll close the dialog and re-open it to see if that time the mouse (or tablet) will work. From what I've seen, I'll either be able to use both or not able to use both, rather than only having the mouse but not the tablet or vice versa.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel HDA audio card, and would like to record both my soundcard output and my microphone input at the same time. Getting to record my soundcard output (aka "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-Hear") is impossible for my soundcard without using the PulseAudio monitor, so I've set that up. Now I can record either the PulseAudio monitor for my soundcard, or the microphone input, but I don't know how to record both at the same time.
Currently, my .asoundrc looks like this:

So now I can choose either "pulse" as an input channel in, for example, Audacity or RecordMyDesktop applications (and then set in the PA volume control the actual channel which I want recorded), or choose "pulse_monitor" or "pulse_mic", in order to record either the PA monitor or the microphone, respectively.
I've read through the ALSA plugins reference, as well as the Asym and Dmix pages on ALSA wiki, but I'm still not sure how to put this together. I figured there should be a way either to route the microphone input into the ALSA output, and thus make the PA monitor "hear" what I speak into the microphone, or to make a completely new channel with both ALSA output and microphone input as "slaves", and then use that for recording.
I just implemented dracut on my Slack. It works well, but for this also I had to rebuild the kernel. Everything works as it should beside KDM. When KDM start mouse/keyboard don't work. I check the logs and I don't actually see any errors.Note: Im using Slack in VirtualBox with fbdev or vesa driver and it doesn't work with neither of the drivers. I suppose its something missing in the kernel, but don't know what.Before rebuilding the kernel and implementing dracut, everything work with fbdev and/or vesa

We have a curious problem with adobereader-plugin in firefox.When a pdf document is displayed via the plugin, i.e. within a tab in firefox, all input fields are disabled. I cannot enter a search string or fill in fields. The cursor and page up/down keys are also disabled. But when I configure firefox to open pdf documents with the external acroreader, everything works fine.
Additional notes:* We are just migrating from SuSE. Some user profiles are working as expected without problems. Unfortunately, I was not able to figure out the important files: I traced all of firefox' file operations on the user profiles, but there are no significant differences between working and non-working profiles (I just compared filenames, not content).* the same adobe-plugin works with firefox 3.0.15 from mozilla.org* I also set up a clean i386-Centos 5.4 from original CD, SELinux disabled, updated and created standard user. I only added the adobe-repository. The same effect, no search avaible.
I purchased a used Windows XP Pro machine and can't install Ubuntu as the system says "boot from CD disabled. How can I restore the booting process?

I just installed the latest version of ubuntu on a compaq presario cq60. I have no issues connecting to the internet via ethernet but for some reason the wireless says its disabled in the top corner. Now there is a button that has the wireless off/on capablilty but whats strange is in Windows it would always boot to be off and I would have to press it to activate it. It boots orange but when ubuntu boots it goes blue(on, but clearly it isn't.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:

it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do

then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?
I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.
The Firefox 3.6.7 update this morning disabled most of the plug-ins that were installed and working. This has happened a few times and is a real problem for those of us who depend on the plug-ins to perform our work. es, I suppose it would be possible to manually predetermine the compatibility of each plug-in prior to installing an update. But that is very time consuming, painful, and prone to error.
There needs to be a pre-install process that will do those checks and warn the user of any incompatibilities - then allow them to choose whether to install the update. I never have understood why the current "shotgun" approach was chosen. It breaks many things.
I have looked at Ubuntu LiveCDs going back to Edgy, but regardless what version I'm trying or what box I'm trying it on, my wireless network card never works - I can never connect to my network.I've begun to believe that the NIC must be intentionally disabled on the LiveCD version. :/ Conversely, with Mint Linux and PCLinuxOS (for example) LiveCDs, I slap the disc in, enter my network key, and BOOM-- I'm on the internet.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've played with Ubuntu, and a linux evangelist at work has talked me into trying it again.I happened to be wiping my machine, so my plan was to have Windows 7 and Ubuntu on one hard drive (100GB for Ubuntu, the rest for Windows), and the second hard drive for downloads, TV, films, etc.First I installed Windows, then I torrented the x64 Ubuntu 10.04 live CD iso, and burned it to a DVD. I booted from it and installed on the second partition, but I then found when I booted back into windows that my second hard drive wasn't there any more.
It didnt take long to work out that Ubuntu had installed using the second hard drive as a mirror. This is very confusing to me, as I've disabled RAID in my BIOS. I booted from the Ubuntu CD again and looked for options about this but didn't find any. Eventually out of frustration I just unplugged the second hard drive, but now when I boot from the CD to install, no hard drives show up for me to install to.
I've been experiencing a problem when I try to install Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 on my girlfriend's notebook. In the middle of the installation process a window pops-up saying "[Errno 5] input/output error". This has happened with both versions and I can't get through it, no matter what.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install a second NIC on a computer running 10.10 x64 server edition, but am having a bit of trouble and hoping someone can help. I got a used gigabit PCIe ethernet adapter and hooked it up, but it didn't display when I ran ifconfig, so I assumed that it was broken. However, when I plugged in a known working 10/100 adapter from another machine it also wasn't configured.
I then did a bit of investigating and found that both cards ARE detected, but are unable to work for an unknown reason. Here's the output of "sudo lspci | grep -r Ethernet"

I have some experience using linux systems, but my recent Fedora 10 (x86_64) install is my first attempt at installing and maintaining my own. I installed it to a clean second hard drive in my computer (Vista and XP partitions were previously installed on the first drive).The install was a bit of a fight, anaconda seemed to dislike my graphics card (ATI HD2900) and I finally got this issue resolved by running the install with 'linux xdriver=vesa'. Once the install completed I had to run a repair install to get a functioning grub, and even that I had to manually fix during the boot process because grub mixed up the two hard drives.
In Fedora I cannot choose any widescreen resolutions. I think this is either related to my hacky install process or ATI driver incompatibilities. I followed the URL... guide to try to update the drivers and have run a full system update. Neither has resolved my problems, and now I am fresh out of ideas.
Is there some other driver update process I should try, or should I just reformat the drive and try again with crossed fingers and a clean Fedora install?As an infuriating side note, I helped a friend install from the same DVD after my install fearing he might have the same issues, but the installer seemed to do everything automatically (his install was also on a second drive with Vista on the first, but his video card is a newer model ATI card than mine).
I am just getting started with Ubuntu and love it so far. It has breathed new life into an old Compaq Presario V2000 and once I get up to speed on it I hope to start running it on all the rest of our machines.
The only major problem I am having is that none of the USB devices I have plugged in are being detected. From what I have seen online I should be getting a notification and should be able to view the devices at Places/Computer but so far, nothing. Googling this problem it appears that individual devices often don't work but I could not find anything on all USB devices not working.
Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong here?
When I ran updates and installed 9.10, this message appeared, "Network service discovery disabled. Your current network has a .local domain, which is not recommended and incompatible with the Avahi network service discovery. The service has been disabled." The computer will not respond to anything, completely frozen--I am not able to open any programs and the CPU itself seems to be running loudly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Toshiba NB100 originally came pre-installed with 8.04 LTS and even has a 'Ubuntu Certified' case sticker, so I expected that jumping to the next LTS should be easy... It was. Simply burnt the image to a thumb drive, booted into the live mode, saw that everything worked and installed it. Everything that worked in 8.04 works here. Not a single problem!
Of course, you have to do a clean install though because the 8.04 supplied by Toshiba is disabled to only allow updates for 8.04 but not to upgrade. I did not need to install any 'Payson' packages and the once proprietary wireless driver is now not, so I have a totally non-proprietary system.
As well as looking nicer and booting faster there are other pluses. I can now upgrade in future without a clean install (if I want) and hopefully no longer have to put up with updates breaking the system - for example sound disappeared on two 8.04 updates (a finding found by many NB100-11R users) and the last update which pushed me to try 10.04 ASAP also made my webcam undetectable and the keyboard mapping all wrong. No such problems here now and I don't expect it.
So, if you have Toshiba-NB100-11R, there is absolutely nothing to lose. Backup your valued files and go for it. Totally painless. Of course you'll need add all the restricted stuff back yourself, but that's not hard. EDIT: Only one thing doesn't work (that doesn't bother me): the function key to toggle wireless on and off. It always remains on.
When a USB device is attached to the laptop 10.04 does not automount the device. i.e. the device, be at an external drive, memory stick or iPod does not display with the correct icon on the desktop.
However, if one looks under Places|Computer there they all are with the correct icons. The devices can then be mounted from there.

This is really disappointing given that 10.04 was promoted on its iPod friendliness!

After upgrading to Lucid 10.4, I find that after booting I can no-longer auto-mount any USB drive when they are plugged in. They simply doesn't appear on the desktop as they did. Swap my PATA drive back to the one with 9.10 still installed on it is well.However, if I have USB drives plugged in before boot, they appears on the desktop, but are not auto-mounted as previously. Also when I click on any drive icon for the first time there is no response. Try again (on any drive) an the devices will all auto-mount revealing their contents in the window that subsequently opens. Everything them seems fine. I can unmount and remount at my leisure with any number of devices.
I do not have the problem of root only access that others have mentioned. I have played with usbmount and pmount as others have suggested, to no avail. They have both been removed.I have the HAL installed as default, and have already ecked media_automount_open for Nautilus on the gconf-editor.Disabling the floppy in the BIOS has not effect and I do not use autologin option.With (say) two USB drives attached, whether the devices are recognised at boot or not after boot,lsusb reveals:
