Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Stereo Mic Input To Mono Input?
Nov 4, 2010
I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 1 -vv -V mono /dev/null
it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do
Code:
arecord -r 96000 -D pulse -c 2 -vv -V stereo /dev/null
then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?

I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

I need to know how to setup Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit to record what's called the "stereo" and "mono" mix popular in Windows where it records anything playing out of the speakers. The goal is to play the microphone through the speakers at the same time background music is playing and thus record both. I also need to know how to play the microphone through the speakers.

i have this weird problem with my pavucontrol. for some reason my input levels go up and down by themselves when i'm talking on skype...mostly up...and it's annoying because i'll be talking normally, but to the people i talk to on skype it sounds like i'm yelling, and i have to have pavucontrol open always to constantly keep the levels under control..i've made a short desktop recording showing what i mean.i didn't include sound, but as you can see, i'm not turning the levels up manually..i just talk and they go up by themselves

I would like to use Japanese kana (hiragana, katakana, kanji) on Ubuntu but everything that I've tried to get it set up and running isn't working. The Spanish that I have set up is working perfectly so far.
I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.

Kinda like sleep timers, this technology has been around longer than dirt as a basic option on TVs, radios and other electronics, and yet why is it so hard to find these options in the modern OS? So far on Google I've seen this question asked repeatedly as far as 4 years ago. Haven't come across an answer...How to enable mono sound instead of stereo?

In "language support" I installed Thai, but it remains grayed out.
In "ibus preferences / input method", no languages are shown.
I added:
I added: "ibus-daemon --xim" to startup applications. No effect.

So I've got an flv video with horrible stereo sound (sound is good, but the stereo is very bad), which I listen to with my headphones. I need to make it mono in GNU/Linux since I have no Windows. Or with any Web-service, I don't know. Any tool to do so.

how to change my input language (the way typing in accents affects the output character).
Currently I am on a Brazilian abnt keyboard and an English system (which is what I want), but I am unable to output accented characters - which I sometimes want, when I am not programming. I need something to switch around, but cannot find where to configure additional languages (not keyboards) neither where to switch.
I am on 10.04 with a gnome desktop.

I really don't know what to call it, but I want to change the color of text that appears before you type in whatever your input is.
For example:
Code:
negrabee@david-desktop:~$ ls /home/david/
I would want "negrabee@david-desktop:~$" to be in a different color. When you have whole bunch of commands and text in a full screen terminal, it gets really annoying to have to look for where you're entering the command so changing the color.

I have wireless USB headset with four buttons. Two for volume control (They work).
I'd like to use the other buttons too. One gives 'Alt-C' as input. The doesn't give visible any input. I tried to get the input with Wireshark but it could only capture 16 packages when plugging in the headset.
So my question is: How can I get the input for the second Button?
and how can I change the Input of the first button (Alt-C) to e.g. xf86audiomute?

I've never tried getting my mic to work in linux up until now. For some reason I can't get any sound to come through on the input. I don't really mess with my sound settings so my knowledge is pretty limited in this area. I have a Creative Audigy 2 card and it seems to be using PulseAudio. alsamixer, aplay etc. all seem to NOT be installed. I can edit volume one of two ways. The gnome sound prefrecnes or using pacmd. I'm kind of at a loss here and my searches haven't turned up anything useful as they refer to alsamixer etc.

I had have this problem since I first install Karmic back in February. Now I installed 10.04 and the problem with the input sound is still here.
Plain simple: there is no input sound at all.
I already checked the alsamixer controls at the terminal and everything seems normal. I have a sonny Vaio laptop model VPCF11FD.

I have investigated loads and loads of options and haven't really yet come across what I need.
I wish to stream the microphone input from a PC using Lucid to another PC also using Lucid on the same network. I don't care about the quality, however, latency is really important. I hope to use it to monitor the cries of my baby daughter, so the lower the latency the better.
I have tired various options:
- FFserver and FFmpeg - latency of over 30 seconds
- VLC - couldn't get it to work with my mic and maxes out the CPU
- ssh server 'cat /dev/dsp > /dev/dsp' - latency of around 5 seconds by audio keeps breaking up with huge delays
- icecast2 and darkice - latency of around 7 seconds but no audio breakups
I've been reading on maybe using PulseAudio to stream the input, but I am not sure if it will work or not...
how to get near real-time streaming audio? As I said, it is the realtime, not the quality that is important...

Long time Ubuntu user, but it's been a couple years.
My friend had an old Dell Dimension E251 lying around and I said I'd help him turn it into a media center of sorts. The old 52" HDTV he wants to plug it into has a broken vga input and no HDMI, so our only real option is component or (heaven forbid) S-video. He can afford to get a new video card if it's relatively cheap, and I'm not really sure what would be our best option. Does anyone have a card in mind that would be relatively hassle free? I considered getting a card with HDMI output and using one of those HDMI to component converters, but my research suggests that that won't work. Are there old cards with component out, or is there a card that makes this relatively easy to achieve?

Ubuntu is perfect for me, except that i have to dual boot sometimes to windows 7 for the one application that wont run in a virtual environment (LockDown Browser, and occasionally onenote). Except, i cant find tablet control features in Ubuntu, to change input devices (the touchscreen is awful, but I cant turn off the option to use finger as an input device. Also, when i boot to windows 7, the mouse track pad/left and right click doesn't work (they work in Ubuntu)? The keyboard does, and so does my stylus (which I have to use as a substitute)

I have the following problem. As trying to record with an analog microphone through arecord, audacity, gnome-sound-recorder i can get no sound captured. Then i've tried skype where the volume is too low and the sound is distorted.
Until i was using an usb webcam with mic integrated i had no problem using skype but with a simple usb mic i can't get sound recorded. I've tested 3 different mic in a windows os and in opensuse 11.3 on the same pc with a double partition. All of them are working fine with win but not with opensuse.
Bellow i' m providing some info as requested in a similar post from oldcpu
11.3 x86-64 & vt1828s - No sound from mic or line in code...
i've tried to upload to the alsa site but it gave me only a .txt output therefore, i've put it on pastebin.
Sound output works without problems. The only problem is the mic input.
When the volume of the mic is at 100% i can here sound from the speakers, what should mean that the mic is working, but it's not capturing anything. I've checked the mixers from yast>harware>sound and seem to be all up as in alsamixer in terminal and kmix.
I'd like to add that i'm using opensuse 11.3 with kde 4.5.5 updated today through the stable repositories and to have even updated alsa, as proposed always from oldcpu in the same post mentioned in the beginning of this post, from the following site and for my specific kernel.

I know it was working earlier on but I can't figure out what the settings were at that time. Are there any ideas on what I can try to get the input and output audio working correctly?
