I've been experiencing a problem when I try to install Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 on my girlfriend's notebook. In the middle of the installation process a window pops-up saying "[Errno 5] input/output error". This has happened with both versions and I can't get through it, no matter what.

I am trying to install v 10.04.1 and it works up till 34% and then it gives me that error. So annoying and i don't have any other OS's.
I am posting this from a bootable 9.10 CD which doesnt even partition right.
I have a 64 bit CPU but i downloaded 32 bit ubuntu.
I've managed to boot up ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 using PXE, but when the installer is copying the files it fails. I've md5sum checked the iso and it is OK.

View 9 Replies View RelatedEverytime I attempt to Install Ubuntu or Mint, I get the above error and I am unsure as to why it keeps happening. I read on other forums it can be due to your optical drive so I tried 4 different burners and 3 different types of CD's.
I know they work fine because I use them for other PC's. I've used them on windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mandriva Linux without a single problem. It's only when attempting to install Ubuntu or Mint that I get these errors and it happens every time.
In the error it also mentions that their may be a problem with your HDD, but I've used that HDD for windows xp through its whole life, I only just reformatted earlier in an attempt to install Linux.
I'm trying to install Wine on Fedora 13, I tried installing it from the "Add/Remove Software Repository" but the installation fails, I tried installing it from the Terminal using the following command as root: "yum install wine"

I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. I would like to erase my old xp completely and have only ubuntu as my OS. I boot from cd but when I install it stops at 15% and keeps giving me this error:
Input/output error during write on /dev/sda.
It won't let me retry or ignore and when I cancel the installation continues until I get another error.
I got interested in it when trying to play Windows games on my Mac. I've tried WINE and didn't get anywhere fast, but thats another thread for a different forum.

The trouble I'm having is that when I load a bootable USB/CD of 64bit 10.10, I always get an error that looks a little like: "(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: input/output error. Can not mount /dev/loop0 (cdrom/casperfilesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs." I've done some googling and I've noticed people have had the same problem. They say the alternate downloads could be the problem, or the CD, and that I should use the UNetbootin application. I guess I should start with describing my build:

1. Going to the DL page, DLing 64bit 10.10, and mounting the image to create a bootable CD (by the procedure offered on the DL page).
2. Using Unetbootin to create a bootable USB (this I did multiple tmes, with different versions: 10.10 64bit desktop, 10.04 64 bit desktop, and I'm about to try another DL except I forgot which one I'm using, but I'll find out in a bit )..........
This is what I get when following the instructions to fix grub. I type in "grub-install /dev/sda" and that's the error I get.I'm trying to put Ubuntu or Mint on a Dell Mini 9 with 16gb ssd, but no matter what I do I cannot achieve this goal

At 15% I get the following Error Message Input/output Error During Read On/dev/sda then I get the creation of swapspace in partition #5 of SCSI1(0,0,0) (SDA) Failed. Ive tried 6 times already. Im getting no sound at all. How can I change the screen resolution. 800 x 600 is the highest it will go. Im getting really discouraged with Ubuntu. Alot of people seem to have the same problems I am having but there is no solutions. I've checked the MEMTEST and passed, done a disk check and passed.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to install Xubuntu 10.10 x64, but it does not work. While copying data the setup tells me about an Input/Output error, but i don't think there are hardware errors.
The environment:
AMD Phenom II 1055t 6x2,8 Ghz
2x 2gb ram
Hitachi 1TB hard drive
Two partitions: 1st for Windows 7 Ultimate (NTFS), 2nd for my Data (NTFS)
So I decreased the size of the data partition and created two new partitions beside the Win7 partition and the data partition. The first is ext4-journal (20gb) the second is Swap (4gb). I've done that all by the Xubuntu setup.
I've downloaded the image from the german mirror (TU Chemniz) and checked the integrety via SHA1. Checksum was correct. I also checked the data after burning.
I am fully aware that these following photo's are not all required for a full understanding of my issue, but I will post them regardless. Checklist to see if my computer meets best results possible for the installation. Screenshot.jpg These photos showing here are where I plan on Installing Ubuntu

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use the growisofs command from the terminal to do most of my burning. Mostly because i burn almost the exact same type of file every time so its pretty easy to set up. I've done this dozens of times and never once had a problem before. I loved it because it was so much simpler than doing this in windows where i would need to install a few extra programs and codecs. That was up until today where it started failing every single time i tried to burn something.
For some reason every time i try to burn a disc it gives me this error message:

I'm really at a loss as to why this is happening. Every thread i found that discussed this problem was mostly focused on k3b or brasero and never really answered the question. As far as i know nothing has been updated since the last time i burned a disc a few days ago. Everything is exactly the same as it was when it worked. The only thing i could think of that might have caused this sudden failure is that i flashed the firmware of another cd drive using the same sata port that this drive is currently plugged into, but that was in windows so i dont see how it could have affected this drive.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 two days ago and was using my 1tb passport external HDD with it to download and store files. However today whenever i try and copy/cut and past to the HDD i get this error message..

I'm having some trouble installing Ubuntu 10.04. What I am trying to do is completely wipe all things on my computer and install Ubuntu. I have followed the instructions from Ubuntu's homepage on how to download the ISO, and ran their program to put it onto a portable USB device. Through doing all of this, I receive no error messages. Then it tells me to change the BIOS to boot from USB, so I did that. I've successfully accessed the install menu and filled in all the information requested (i.e. computer name, account name, etc.). I select that I want to delete the current partitions and use only Ubuntu. It starts to install, but at 67%, while copying files, I receive an error.

I just received a 1TB external(Western Digital) hard drive(NTFS) for backup purposes. I'm using an Ubuntu Live CD, and an external hard drive dock. I am transferring over esata and am receiving the error:

Seems strange that it said "open". At any rate only about 60 of the 200+ GB were able to be transferred over...this won't do. I have tried to copy via CLI using

and received the same issue. For clarification I am attempting to transfer from a mounted partition onto the mounted external.
My dad is out of town for a while, so I've been using his computer to rip my DVDs with Handbrake. He has Windows Vista installed, so I did a full installation of Fedora 13 on a thumb drive and just run everything off of that. However, when I went to delete some of the encoded videos after I had moved them to my computer, I got a system error that said 'can't delete files: I/O error.' Now, if I try to boot up Windows, his computer is stuck on a black screen checking a bunch of dlls. He'll be back in a couple of weeks, so I'd like to have it fixed by then.

We are running an C++ application in AWS EC2 instance (CentOS 5.4) mounted with an EBS Volume (say /mymountpoint). We do more simultaneous writes to the EBS Volume from our application. But at some point we get 'ERROR: Input/output error'. After this, 'ls -l /mymountpoint' command itself fails with the i/o error. The filesystem which we use for the EBS Volume is xfs. I unmounted the drive and done xfs_check and again mounted the drive. Now, everything seems to be working fine. But the issue still persists everytime when we do simultaneous writes.
I believe the following details will be useful,
