I'm working on a custom Ubuntu Live CD and i have some problem with "stdin error 0" appearing before the splash screen... How can i prevent this? Or hide|redirect the output from stdin?

i've tryed to get rid of the ugly plymouth splash screen and this outpout at boot now:
stdin: error 0
and so on... It also appears in my /var/log/boot.log and /var/log/casper.log. But the OS works, just like before. I would like to know how can i get rid of this error. Or how can i hide it? Can i redirect the output to dev null at boot time?

Because it is really annoying to see an "error" when your computer boots, even if it is not really an error
I have two Debian machines running Squeeze x86 and x86_64.
I am having difficulties to untar a file in x86_64, although it is working in x86.
I made sure file is the same and the md5 match in both machines.
It seems like something special in x86_64 is causing it to fail.

My printer has stopped working.
1. I am unsure if any system changes have occured. I am sure I must have changed something, but apparently did not document it.
2. Printer does work from other computers
3 Computer was originally wireless connected, but switched to USB. This had no affect. Well I can scan now so great.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have serious problems hiding the Grub menu at startup.
What I want to do is simple boot into the first (and only) item without showing the menu to the user.
I have removed everything on the system so the only option is "GNU/Linux, with Linux 2.6.32-30-generic" in the menu.
My /etc/default/grub is like this:

No matter what I do I always get the same result:
The menu is shown and no countdown!
It's like grub isn't reading the changes of /etc/default/grub

Just did a clean install of 11.04.Is it possible to adjust the unity launcher speed?When I take my cursor to the left it takes a while to show up. I'd like it to be immediate.

Is there a simple way to prevent a package from updating when I update the rest of the system? I realise that this is not normally a good idea to keep packages back like this, but the upgrade to kaffeine caused the loss of a useful tool.

It needed to restart, but the system just got stuck after the default GRUB entry started loading.Is there a way to undo the updates? I can't boot into 9.10 any more so I'm not sure how this would work.

They should not have any shell access, so currently their login script, at the end, starts the program that they use, and after that program ends, the login script moves on to log them back out. The problem is, they could press ctrl+c, while the login script is running, and it quits the login script and spits them out at a shell prompt. -- Is there any way I can prevent this?

But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. - Core 2 Quad 6600
- Nvidia 7600 GS
- Two disk seagate 500 in mirroring raid software
When I try to install Kubuntu, after disk partition, my system dosn't see the CD. He tell me to insert disk into drive but I doesn't touch it. I resolved this mounting an external hard disk into /cdrom. After this, the installation continues until the step "select and install software". I tried to install last Ubuntu distribution (11.04) in a laptop that fits setup requirements. I downloaded de Iso, burnt on cd and restart the laptop with the cd inside it.The hard disk does not have any partition, it's empty, I suppose installation gives that opcion.At the begining of the installation, before any interactivity, I get this error:

But only the oldest works. With the new update there is a new kernel version (2.6.32-24) that possibly will not boot (like previous 2.6.32-* kernels) and also I expect that, as in previous updates, the oldest kernel will become inaccessible, thus rendering my ubuntu unbootable.

Is there any way I can prevent OpenOffice automatically installing when using the Alternate disc? I want to install a different package (LibreOffice 3.3) without having to uninstall Ubuntu's OpenOffice.
I was trying to update from 9.04 to 9.10.
During the installation, I kept getting tons of errors. Finally something came up saying that I had to abort the installation and it did some stuff. I tried running an application, but I got an error. So I restarted the system.
The normal screen came up where I had to choose the Ubuntu stuff (I'm new to Ubuntu) in the box. I noticed that it had gone to 8.10... which I had earlier before installing 9.04, which went great. So I chose the first on and the system failed to start. I rebooted and tried all the other options, but they all had errors. Now I'm booted to Windows.
I installed Ubuntu from a CD I created. But it is now outdated because it is 8.10, and I have already upgraded to 9.04. 9.04 to 9.10 is where stuff went wrong.
I tried to install 64bit 10.04 Release Candidate but it fails every time. I have been using 64bit 9.10 Karmic on this computer so it's suitable for installation.
I tried to install from USB stick and from CD but same error at the same point! It fails just befere it starts to ask your locations etc...
There must be something totally wrong on installer. Checksums are ok etc...
Errors seen with CD and USB stick installation: Pop up: "Istalltion failed The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again."

I just (for the first time ever) installed a version of Ubuntu. It is 10.04. I installed off of the Live Disk. I was having a great time until the first time I went to boot into it and I got the message

I just completed the ubuntu 10.04 installation using the windows' installer.After the installation, the system reboot. I chose "ubuntu" from the OS selection screen.A message appeared that the system would verify the installation parameters.
Suddently, a message was shown:
"no main file system chosen. Please solve this error from the partition menu."
And it wouldn't continue!
how can I find the partition menu and set the file system for the ubuntu?? An idea would be to enter the installation cd for windows (as if I would wanted to format the pc)...wouldn't then the partition menu appear?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my Windows Vista Home Premium machine. And wubi can't pick up where it left off, you have to uninstall to reinstall, which sucks tremendously.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 10.04 32bit onto a new 1.5TB harddrive. I had previously installed 10.04 64bit on an old drive in the same nmachine. I partitioned and formatted the new drive using the old system. I have a couple of windows partitions and restored Win2K images to them, 4 formated Ext3 partions for whever flavour of Linux appeals to me a swap and two huge NTFS Data (home) and work areas. I installed Grub on the new drive, it also has its own partition for boot config files. The old drive has now gone.
Grub2 boots OK and gives me option for all the OS's even the one that are gone, thats OK I can fix that later with grub-update. Win2K boots fine and I see my NTFS partitions.
Now I boot from the Live i386 CD and chosse to install Ubuntu. The only thing that not allowed to default is where to install. Specify partition manually, Choose a spare 20GB Ext3 and the swap is already there too. I let it reformat to Ext3 and mount as /. (In Advanced I let the install boot loader default to ticked on /dev/sda )
The install goes OK until I hit the pop-up "Installation Failed". The installed encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will be run etc etc..
I have tried this at least 10 times no. I downloaded and cut a new CD even though the old one worked fine on another box. Tried unticking the boot loader. Disable the floppy, removed the floppy.
I am relatively new to Ubuntu. Where do I look for the cause of the problem? I'll cut and paste the install log files in a moment.
I have 9.10 installed and working like a charm, due to the problems I had last time, I decided to leave an empty space to try and test upcoming editions, but I can't install it!
I get two error messages and can't get past the point of partition assignment.
