Ubuntu Installation :: Running Installer From USB Drive?

Dec 16, 2010

I've been having some problems getting the Ubuntu (9.10 ?) installer to start on my desktop computer. I have created a bootable USB stick using usb-creator (from my laptop), and am able to boot from it on my laptop. However, I get a "Boot error" message on my desktop when I tell BIOS to boot from the USB stick.I'm not sure this is related, but I tried to boot the Ubuntu install CD from my external USB CD Drive, but nothing happened - it just proceeded to boot from my primary hard drive. I have enabled USB boot in the BIOS, but it doesn't list the USB stick as removable media. It lists as a hard disk drive instead. I can't find the external CD Drive on any of those lists.

(Also, the laptop is dual-booting and has grub installed. The desktop has a single OS - WinXP (and hence doesn't have grub installed).. I don't know how this should affect the USB boot though)(I don't think this is a problem with only the Ubuntu installer, but I'd like a confirmation on this)

Debian Installation :: Laptop Unbootable After Running Installer

Apr 3, 2016

I was running Windows 10 on MSI GT70 2OD-064US hoped to dual boot first had three primary partitions shrunk largest one and ran debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso chose guided install with remaining free space, didn't force UEFI asked if I wanted to install GRUB after finding Windows Vista (loader) I went ahead and installed. Couldn't boot afterwards with dark screen saying no install media, changed BIOS to legacy mode and got grub prompt followed tutorial and entered these commands:

grub> set root=(hd0,5)
grub> linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda5
grub> initrd /initrd.img
grub> boot

This caused it to boot without GUI I ran grub-update and restarted back at grub> again. How to get debian to boot or even windows 10 again?

CentOS 5 :: Prevent Device-mapper From Loading In Installer

Mar 5, 2009

I am trying to prevent the dm_mod and friends from loading during install.I am installing by PXE boot with NFS and kickstart files over http. This works fine for other machines.Ok, I have a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with 8gig ram, PERC 6/i raid controller. The raid has 8 1TB drives in it, so the total size of the device is >2TB.There is also an SATA drive, which is NOT on the raid controller.

The problem is, I want to install CentOS on the SATA drive. The SATA drive comes up as a device-mapper drive, with a big crazy device name. This is ok, but the problem is, when the system goes to boot, it just says 'missing operating system'.I can't boot from the raid because it is large enough to require a GPT partition, and CentOS says it can't boot from a GPT partition. The SATA drive would work FINE if I could just prevent the damn device mapper from loading, so that I could install on the SATA drive in ordinary SATA mode.

I have tried re-squashing the stage2.img with /etc/modprobe.conf with alias dm_mod off and such, no luck.I also tried adding an /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file, that did not work either.I also tried putting blacklist= dm_mod in the kickstart file, but that seems to be a fedora-only option and it kills my install. any ideas on preventing the dm_mod et. al. from loading at install time??

Fedora :: Method To Prevent Grub Installer From Overwriting MBR Pointer

Jun 17, 2010

Is there a method to prevent the grub installer from overwriting the MBR pointer when grub or the kernel is updated? I'm running a multiboot system and when Fedora's grub installs, then OpenSolaris' partition isn't included in the bootlist and Ubuntu's menu line has a chainloader line that doesn't resolve correctly, requiring a hand edit.I may try to do a chmod 444 grub-install , but I'm not so sure what the reprocussions may be.

Software :: Prevent Rsync From Running If Another Instance Is Running?

Mar 29, 2011

On my crontab there is an entry to run a script I wrote that backs up my local files to my remote server. It was working great, running once a day. However, I now want to make the script run every hour. The problem is that if there are too manyfiles to transfer (Example:I ripped a DVD in the last hour) the actual backup may take longer than 60 minutes. So I want to modify the script to check if my backup script, based on rsync, is running. If rsync is still running then do nothing and exit the script. If it is not running, execute the script as normal.

General :: Video Prevent Screensaver When Flash Is Running

Apr 6, 2011

I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask, or if this has been asked before, but it has been bugging me for some time and I have not had any luck with it. I imagine that my problem is not unique to my circumstances, but here goes.I am running Arch Linux, and quite frequently watch videos, particularly flash, in fullscreen. However, eventually, the screensaver appears, and starts dimming the screen. I have the screensaver set to run whenever the computer is 'idle'. Does anyone know a way to either.Stop the screensaver from appearing when in a flash video or watching other video?Stop the screensaver from appearing when a flash video or normal video is full-screened? Heck, even..Let the screensaver know that my machine is not idle when watching flash.

Fedora Security :: How To Prevent The Appearance Changing Window Running

May 21, 2009

I want to prevent users changing the wallpaper, as i couldn't found any direct method I thought of preventing the /usr/bin/gnome-appearance-properties being running,

I know that the user also can set the wallpaper without running that . But didn't found any other way .

I tried to use SELinux to it and I'm stuck at writing a own policy.

According to SELinux, it prevents everything ., but as i have mapped the user to a SElinux user ,even though he can use administrative tasks , he can run the appearance window. that means he has got the permission from a different policy , Currently I'm stuck at this place.

Suitable way to prevent the wallpaper being changed by the normal users.

OpenSUSE Install :: Ubuntu Installer Running Slow?

Mar 14, 2010

I was messing around couple linux distros and a desktop earlier today. When I booted from the Ubuntu disk, it seemed to take like 2-5 minutes on each screen. So was basically taking like 10 minutes before I even got to the disk's menu. When i booted the machine off of openSUSE 11.2 disk it booted nice and fast, then installed without a hitch. When i put the Ubuntu disk into my laptop it booted fast and fine there.I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas why that desktop would seem to disagree with a bootable Ubuntu disk like that. Those things are obviously designed to work with near anything. It's a standard IDE CD-ROM, 7600GT, IDE hard drive, all pretty standard stuff.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Prevent Removal Of Older Kernel Versions On Update

Jul 28, 2010

I need to prevent that the latest kernel update removes the only kernel that still works in my computer. how can i do this? Currently I have 3 linux kernels versions:

Code:

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-23-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-22-generic

[code]...

But only the oldest works. With the new update there is a new kernel version (2.6.32-24) that possibly will not boot (like previous 2.6.32-* kernels) and also I expect that, as in previous updates, the oldest kernel will become inaccessible, thus rendering my ubuntu unbootable.
