Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Vista - 9.10 Installation Error - Permission Denied?
Jan 4, 2010
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my Windows Vista Home Premium machine. My specs far exceed the requirements to install, so I know there's no problem there.On installation I receive an error somewhat through that says something like:Quote:An error occured:Permission deniedFor more information, please see the log file:C:UsersUsernameAppDataLocalTempwubi-9.10ubuntu1-rev160.logSo.... I go to that file, and the last line in it is:Quote:OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: u'C:\ubuntu\install\ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso'I did run Wubi Installer as an Administrator, and unblocked it giving it full privileges.It's really annoying because my download speed is 80kb/s so it takes about 3 hours to download. During that 3 hours I can't use my internet so I have to wait, and wait, and wait, and then boom.error. And wubi can't pick up where it left off, you have to uninstall to reinstall, which sucks tremendously.

I'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 for a friend, dual booting it with windows vista. The installation was going just fine up until the 4th step- partitioning the drives. After designating space for vista and ubuntu and running it, it popped up the window and displayed 0%... for the next hour. After looking around on ubuntu forums for a solution, I tried manually partitioning the drives in vista. Vista wouldn't let me, saying that access was denied. I tried using gparted next, which had an error with it as well. Does anyone know what i can do to work around this?

I installed MATLAB R2009a in my laptop (Fedora 14 x86-64), the installation was succesful but when I run MATLAB (in a console), appears a message: error while loading shared libraries: libut.so: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Permission denied
I find a "solution", execute in a terminal: execstack -c libut.so
I used several times with differents libraries that I needed, but I run MATLAB in a terminal, MATLAB starts in a terminal, only a prompt ">>" and nothing.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 as a dual boot on my laptop next to Win 7. I installed using all defaults, as I am pretty much a novice user. I also put 10.04 on my desktop at home, but did not install. I am running that machine ON the Win 7 partition. My problem is that on my desktop, I get a boot option of Windows or Ubuntu from the MBR, and Windows is the default. If I choose Ubuntu, I then get the Grub menu which defaults to Ubuntu (fine, I already chose that).
On my laptop (where I did the full install on its own partition) Grub takes over, which would be fine but for Ubuntu being the default. I really want the default to be Win 7. I have read several posts, and a tutorial on changing the boot order in Grub, but when I try to access the file mentioned (etc/default/grub) I get an error "Permission Denied". I have made myself Administrator, so I should have access to everything. I know I need to change the line GRUB_DEFAULT=0 to GRUB_DEFAULT=6 to make this work, but I cannot open the file. Is there an easier way of doing this? Honestly, if you want novice users to try out Ubuntu, sending them to command line is NOT the way. The great majority of people that might be willing to try Ubuntu will run for the hills at the simple suggestion of command line. Most everything else you do is handled by an app, why not this?

We've run into an interesting issue in our environment:
If user joe1 has an executable that is NFS mounted, owned by him and permissions are set such:
--x--x--x a.out
he can't run it:
./a.out: Permission denied.
if he moves it to the local machine, say /tmp, it works fine with the same permissions.
joe can execute the file if he changes the permissions to r-x--x--x
this behavior seems to exist on the 11.04 clients, but not the 10.04 clients.

I'm trying to install Amanda 3.2 on Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick) using Ubuntu 10.04 deb package. The installation was successful using the dpkg command. The problem crops up when configuring such amanda. When creating a user amandabackup using passwd amandabackup and then enter in it through su - amandabackup a permission denied problem comes up. When enter amserverconfig Dailyset 1 etc etc the server response with :
amservingconfig: critical (fatal): Cannot create debug file "/var/log/amanda/server/amserverconfig.2010120307947.debug": Permission denied and continues
The permissions are set to rw 1 amandabackup backup. I can't understand why it's telling me permission denied each time.

I tried ./INSTALL, it says "bash: ./INSTALL: Permission denied". I also tried from my home folder with full path for the install file, as the readme file says, "To install, enter the full path to the installation program on the media or to the downloaded installation files". I don't know what to do. I have these setup file in my external hard drive.

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

An uncaught exception was raised: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/media/e6f6ac46-4bfc-487b-9c81-aab706ead9e3/boot'
The above is the error message I get when I try to create an usb-flash boot drive. I downloaded the iso for Mint10 and use the "create startup disk" program to create the boot drive. I can see both the iso and the flash drive within the program, but when I click on "create disk" I get the above error message?

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which was set up to dual boot windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04. I created a live USB image for Ubuntu 10.04 using Unet bootin and rebooted from from this to install Ubuntu on an SD card. When I remove the SD card and reboot the laptop I no longer get the GRUB loader menu, instead I get the GRUB error message. I can not now boot into Windows Vista or Ubuntu! Obviously I have caused a GRUB error. I have rebooted using the USB live image and run fdisk l and blkid, the outputs are listed below. how I can restore the GRUB loader menu back please so that I can access Ubuntu or Vista?

I have a shared directory on another machine but I can't get it to mount. The permission denied doesn't say where/which permission is denied. Is it on the remote on on the local machine? The remote has sharing enabled for the shareddocs directory and after I have mkdir'ed the local mount point I open it's permissions too.
The verbose response from mount.cfis looks like this:
mount.cifs kernel mount options: unc=//192.168.1.102shareddocs,domain=WORKGROUP,ver=1,rw ,username=clive,,,,,,,,,,,ip=192.168.1.102,pass=** ******
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) The man page does not have a list of error codes.

I have followed that many post about using a Windows mount, and still have an issue.
Using Ubuntu 8.04 to mount a shared on a Windows 2003 Server.
I have the fstab method with this line:
//server/xms /mnt/xms cifs defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/root/.smbcredentials 0 0
or
//server/xms /mnt/xms cifs credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_ mode=0777 0 0
Both work when doing a mount /mnt/xms command. I can ls the directory on the windows share. I can cat files from the windows share.
If I touch or mkdir in the windows share I get "Permission denied"
