Ubuntu Installation :: Unity Launcher Doesn't Hide Itself Anymore / X After Package Upgrades
May 31, 2011
I've upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 some weeks ago and after some minor tweaking everything has been working fine. But all of a sudden, it seems after some package upgrades, I'm experiencing strange behavior: The first thing I noticed is that after reboot the default application that should be kept in the Unity Launcher have all disappeared. The unity launcher doesn't hide itself anymore. The unity launcher does not react to changes I make via the 'System Settings'->'compizConfig settings manager'->'Ubuntu unity plugin' menu (icon sizes in launcher, hiding method, etc.). Even after logout/login or reboot the changes aren't applied, although the corresponding settings in the configuration menus remain changed.
One application that used to work as a charm started giving the following error on startup: The program 'VESTA' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'. (Details: serial 489 error_code 3 request_code 138 minor_code 4) Since yesterday everything was still working properly and today I get this strange behavior, it seems that something must have changed in between. The only changes on the system in the last 24 hours are the upgrades of the following packages:

The Compiz Setting page for Unity will not let me set the launcher to autohide or other hiding option, and the Experimental page will not let me reduce the icon size. The lack of hiding is another as the left edge of windows can disappear under the the Launcher.

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I am trying to get the talked about Unity netbook shell through my Lucid installation. When i add the repository Code: ppa:canonical-dx-team/une i am offered a list of packages for upgrade which system says is also a partial upgrade. I know i should not be accepting a partial upgrade since it runs the risk of breaking my Lucid install itself - so i have not. How do i not reject these partial upgrades due to the repo addition & still install Unity?

I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and have come across a strange bug, where after using Ubuntu for a while, the launcher suddenly appears and will not hide. This occurs when my mouse is no where near the launcher. I have a duel screen display.
This is very annoying as the launcher appears above the windows I am working on as shown in the screenshot:
bug.jpg
I have tried changing the launcher hide options in ccsm but it doesn't seem to make any difference. At the moment it is set to autohide.

I love this unity launcher panel on the left. but i think it's taking too much valuable space on my small screen so i set up a super small app dock with everything i use but i can't seem to completely hide this unity launcher the only options i find in CCSM are "always show" "autohide" and two other things i can't seem to understand; anw i haven't found a "Always hide". is there a way to do that ?

I can't hide the launcher in unity 3D. In 2D, it works fine, hides when i open a program, looks normal, everything. In 3D, it stays on top of whatever program I'm running. What I've tried Reinstalled unity 2D. (apt-get remove, apt-get install) For whatever reason, when I log into 3D without 2D installed, it looks like gnome, but the screen is garbled, the images disappear, menus come up as plain black squares, i literally can't even open a program. Once I install unity 2D, 3D works fine, but I can't hide the launcher. Messed around with CCSM. I tried each option under hide launcher in unity plugin (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows). None of them change anything. Updated everything through update manager (last night actually). Both 2D & 3D look and work fine, no lag or sluggish behavior. All of the effects look normal. I just can't get rid of the big launcher covering up everything I do! I've just been using 2D, although I would like to use 3D.

I recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:
1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.
2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.
Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)

I just upgraded to Natty this weekend, so don't have much experience with Unity yet. I tried to create a launcher, which starts an application on a VMware virtual machine using vmware-unity-helper (lot's of unity here .
Anyway, so I created the launcher, e.g. MS Project code...
The Exec command is just a little python script, which checks whether the VM is running and then executes the vmware-unity-helper command with the correct path and all.
The launcher works, when I double-click in in nautilus. But when I drag'n'drop to the unity bar and click it nothing happens. I pulses some (as if the application would start) but nothing happens.

For some reason the general launcher button (+ in circle) in the unity menu has disappeared. I do not know how to restore it. Which means I have great problems to start al apps that are not standard in the menu.

Is there any easy way to do offline package upgrades in Ubuntu? I was using debian's repository for the longest time to get individual packages, then found launchpad. Is there a script or something that will tell you what the dependencies are then let you copy them to a thumbdrive or something?
I know online upgrades are great but there are some cases where online isn't an option. Here's an example. Getting wine. There used to be this repository of .debs from the wine website, but now I can't find it. Launchpad has it, but it's all individual files.

I have just suscribed into this forum. I have a problem: my notebook (NOTEBOOK SATELLITE L300-SP5917A - INTEL CORE 2 DUO T6400 (2.00 GHZ - 2 MB L2 - 800MHZ FSB) - 15.4 WIDESCREEN TRUBRITE TFT LCD - 400 GB SATA 2 .5 5400 RPM - 3GB PC2-6400 DDR2) doesn't boot ubuntu after the last security upgrade. I have wubi installed.I have Windows Vista and Ubuntu in the boot menu. I select "Ubuntu" and that leads me to the GRUB shell. I'm new in linux. It seems that GRUB doesn't detect the kernel. Maybe the file menu.lst has been deleted, or something similar, but I can't make my ubuntu to boot.

Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

So I can't seem to get my launcher to work right after a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04. No matter what I do, I can't get my launcher to hide. I went into ccsm, and under ubuntu unity plugin I tried all four options under the hide launcher menu (never, autohide, dodge windows, dodge active windows) - nothing gets it to hide! The launcher covers up a good chunk of whatever window is open (i.e. a website, or more importantly, the back and forward buttons in chrome). In unity 2D, I don't have this problem. I also saw that when I enabled and disabled the unity plugin, I got this error when I re-enabled.I tried resolving the conflicts favoring the unity plugin, and when that didn't work, the desktop wall.

1st, I got the OS install. I just want to hide some program launcher from menu bar. In the old Gnome, it work this way, I put the mouse on the menu bar, and then right click, choose preference then I can hide everything I wanna hide. But I can not do that on F12 any more, I tired to refer to Gnome instruction manual on Gnome web site. It seems like they did not change anything on Gnome 2.28. Since the instruction remain the same.
2nd I also want to ask, how do I change the default interface language setting in F12? In previous version I just need to do that in SYSTEM-->Preference. But I can not see the option any more either.
3rd I can not install the NVIDIA proprietary driver even though I got GCC and kernel development header in place. The install log said:" The binary file is not for the kernel" Well, I just use the regular i686 kerenl as usual. It does not make sense it will not work.
I got the driver running by using the rpmfusion driver, not the one from Nvida
By the way, The nouveau driver in F12 works far from OK on my GO 7300. It just like a slave driver that whip the GPU at full out all the time, let alone it does not have 3D capability.
The live cd does not include GCC and kernel development header. That made me feel like walking on the moon but forgot to put the gravity suite on.

Recently upgraded to 11.04, and I am happy with the intent but unhappy with the bugs.
I have a specific problem at the moment, the unity launcher will not auto-hide, which means I cannot access the left side of any application (such as the back button for instance). Does anyone know of a fix?
A restart fixes the problem, but If I don't want to do that then I have to set the auto-hide option in Compiz to never, so that application windows stop at the launcher, and don't dissapear underneath. (setting back to other auto-hide options doesn't work)

I upgraded to 11.04. A launcher I had created before the upgrade shows up in the dock and works nicely... but I want to change what it does.
[URL]
says to edit the .desktop file. Fine, but there ought to be a way to do it with the gui, shouldn't there?
[URL]
suggests, after reading between the lines, that you can only edit launchers in the gui when they're not in the dock; the dock is only for pinning launchers that exist elsewhere.
But I don't know where my launcher file is, it's certainly not on the desktop, since I removed it from there before upgrading.
I see that in the new world, deleting a launcher from the desktop removes it from the dock, too.
I am very sad that I can't have launchers on the dock without having them on the desktop, and that there's no way to edit launchers from the dock.
I am aware of the "switch back to classic and stop using unity" workaround.
