View 1 RepliesI have an apparently stable installation of Xubuntu that I've hand-tweaked in a few ways. I'd like to be able to reinstall this system verbatim on this machine should a disk crash happen, etc.Is there a "standard" method to create an install and/or total-backup CD that would be an instantiation of the currently-installed-and-modified system?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have played with the "Live" CD / USB before, and it's my prefered way to install. However, I have an old lappie which won't boot from USB, and I have no blank CDs. I can get files onto it (Windows XP) via the USB keys or the network... but ... is there a way to copy an ISO onto it and force it to run as if it had booted up with it? Is there a utility to allow running the file that the Live USB is made from, with Windows no longer running?

Updated from Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.4. Boots only to grub. 11.4 Live CD results in very distorted video so option of reinstalling Grub 2 is not available. Since 11.4 Live CD has such bad video I want to go back to 10.10. Notebook system has one drive and no windows install. Live CD boot from 10.04 works with clean video, but when I try to copy filesystem /home/username it won't let me because I don't have permission. Properties says I am not owner so I can't change permission. Can someone tell me how I can get permission required to copy files in filesystem when booting from Live CD? Sudo command under terminal of Live CD appears to have no effect on harddrive filesystem files I'm trying to backup.

I don't know if its something I am doing wrong or what but everytime I try and install a file this way or by the programs readme file it always goes wrong in someway shape or form. The only way I have installed a program successfully is through kpackagekit and I am desperately trying to learn terminal's language here, the only thing standing in my way from switching from windows to linux entirely is these damn problems.
Can't install Wubi - log file
I can't install Wubi, I keep getting an error, here is where the log file starts saying "ERROR":
I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit on my Qosmio Toshiba laptop.
At the completion of the install i had about a page of errors. But it boots up ok. However when i tried to install Visual Paradigm on the system i found that every time i ran the executable i get an error message saying access denied. Found away around this problem on a VP forum so managed to get the program to work with the non-install version.
The problem i am having now is i can save files. I have checked the permissions of the vpworkshop folder (properties > permissions) and all permissions are currently set to '---'. If i try and change them to 'wr'. It just reverts back to '---'.
I'm trying to install the 32 bit ubmbuntu 11.04 on my pc, and the installation freezes at the 'Detecting file systems' message. i have tried installing on a pc that had windows xp, and i also tried a clean install on a formtted hard drive, and i still get the same problem.

I'm looking into using fedora as my first Linux OS, read rookie, I have an old HP PC with a brand new hard drive. I downloaded the 'F10-i686-Live.iso' file and tried to boot from it. It brought up a Fedora screen with various boot options and a memory test. I did the test which completed a successful pass. I then tried to boot from it, it showed the horizontal loading bar which turned white, after which the screen went black. From there the screen switched from blank to 'lit up black' , sometimes it showed a cursor which was mouse responsive, sometimes it showed a blinking underline cursor in the top left corner of the screen. Eventually it just stayed blank. Any threads I've checked are irrelevant or refer to a more options or command line option that isn't on the setup screen. Have I the right file/method?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have created virtual cd (using damoen tools) for opensuse 11.2 installation from standard iso file and that installed installer for opensuse in my C drive and asked me to restart. After I restarted it gave me two options during boot, vista and opensuse 11.2 installer. I tried installing opensuse 11.2 from boot option and it asked me for language>country>installation. From the installation window which gave three options, I selected installation option and after preparing system for installation it asked me about sda location....I had separate partition which I selected and after that it is asking me for source which I dont know what it is. I tried few things but no success and then tried to get in to vista but unfortunately it is not booting in vista as well and takes me though the same process explained above.
So both my boot options are trying to install opensuse 11.2 and stops at provide source window. So in a nutshell I am stuck and not able to use my system. For your information I dont have vista installation cd so I cant repair vista.
