Can I install ubuntu to an image file? I am using GRUB to boot my live cd, so is there a way to trick the installer into picking up an image file as another hard disk, like it is in wubi? (I am using mac)

I am trying to upload some pics on my Facebook account using Firefox. When I click on Facebook's file upload icon, Firefox bring up a 'File Upload' window. I noticed that smaller image file is previewed on the lower right hand corner, while bigger image file is not. Is there anyway I can change this behavior or maybe change what Firefox is using to browse my files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe DVD disk is from LinuxFormatMagazine, and PCLOS is the ISO that boots. It has 10.10 on it also, but that isn't the ISO that loads by default. Do I have to transfer the 10.10 file, and burn it to a new ISO? Or can I run or install it from its' current file type on the DVD?
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I look in /var/cache/apt/archives/, I see packages I recognize that I downloaded. But, I also see packages that I know I did not download, but rather were part of the initial installation of the image iso file on the CD. For example, the package for Abiword is in there. I would like to know which packages in this directory I installed, and which were part of the initial installation.
How do I know which packages are part of the installation from the image iso file on the CD? Once I know that, I would make a copy of all the other packages in this folder onto a DVD, so if I ever need to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 I will know which packages to install over and above those part of the initial installation off the iso CD.
I have an ISO file of MATLAB and I want to extract it to be able to run the installer. I'm not the admin of the computer and there is no 7-zip or file-roller. It has isoinfo but I don't how to use it to extract the whole ISO file and apparently I cannot mount the ISO too. way to extract the iso file?
View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore installing Centos, I downloaded an image file and burned it to CD using InfraRecorder. It starts to run but does not complete. My machine is a new Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad CPU with 4G of RAM. It is a 64-bit machine, and I used the 64-bit image. After Centos (which I tried first) failed, I then tried (using the same burning software):
o Slackware
o UBuntu
o gNewSense
o Knoppix
o Debian
o Fedora
o Suse
o BSD
o Solaris
0 puppy Linux
Most failed similarly to Centos. Knoppix worked fully several times, but I was not enthusiastic about installing it, and eventually (on the 5th iteration), it started to fail in a way similar to Centos, and continues so. Solaris and PuppyLinux worked. Those that failed, failed while attempting to start the 4 CPUs. Solaris and Knoppix (when it worked) succeeded in starting all 4 cpus and I could see the messages.
How to communicate what's happening during a failed boot? Finally, I hit upon the idea of photographing the screen during the failing part of the boot; the file is attached. The photo shows the screen just before it blanks, and the BIOS resets for another try. Please let me know if I can collect any other information. I would like to use Centos as a dual boot on my shiny new machine.

I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???
I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 WS on my PC but it did not see any disks to install on. I believe this is because my drives are all configured as RAID. My mobo is an Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI AM2+ socket with an Athlon 2X 5000+ CPU. The chipset is AMD 780G. I have the BIOS configured for RAID drives and I already run Win XP x32 and Win 7 x64 on it. My boot drive is configured as 'RAID READY' and I have 2 RAID 1 disks consisting of pairs of SATA drives.
From what I have researched it seems that with some tuning it should be possible to install Ubuntu 10.04 but I have little Linux experience and don't want to mess up my existing drives. I have installed Linux before a few times and run it but never with RAID. Is anyone aware of an existing disk image that I will be able to install from on my system or would it be possible for someone to create one for me to use?
I downloaded Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso and placed it on a 16GB USB drive using the Windows LiveUSB creator which had downloaded when I first download Fedora 11.The USB boots fine and I choose the language and the the keyboard layout. I tell it the image is on the USB drive it displays /images/install.img as the image.
However after going through all the steps up to choosing where I want it throws an error saying cannot find image #1 on the hard disk.Now if I boot again and instead of choosing the USB drive I hit F2 and then choose the USB drive then /Images then the install.img and press O.K. it says it isn't and just cycles around the choose drive/image.
I have downloaded Fedora-15-x86_64-DVD.iso and try to install as usual:copy the isolinux directory from the image and boot with grub，but the installer doesn't let me select the media and connects and downloads from network directory. After waiting a long time,it reports the network not available, and ask me to select repo from NFS, DVD or http/ftp, still no local hard driver. Is this a new feature of F15?

With the smallest (about 300MB) image, I couldn't add functions because the computer isn't allowed to connect internet, no APT. then, do I need to download all the images? View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install 11.2 on a system with RAID-1 /boot partition and RAID-10 /(root) partition. I have done this before with 10.3 but am hitting a wall with 11.2. In particular, the boot image loads and then halts when it tries to load the RAID-10 root partition saying that the personality is not laoded. modprobe shows that the raid10 module does not appear to be part of the boot image. I cannot find anything in the installation that will allow me to specify a module to include in the init image. How do I tell the installer to include an additional module?

The uderscore is flashing and i can type stuff in but have no idea what to type in to find the kernel image, or why it cant find the kernel image.
I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

I just recently purchased a 40GB hard drive and am looking to reinstall Fedora 14 on this P4 PC, i want to use this PC as a HTPC just for internet, ..... and stream videos, maybe some internet games etc etc, my problem is my main PC cant burn any cd/dvds due to the Drive's being burned out from burning xbox games at 4x on a regular basis, the PC i want to install Fedora on only accepts CD's and even then it barely reads anything!!
Now that you know my situation i want to know if i can take the 686MB 32bit iso image and put it on a 2GB usb drive and boot/install it to the HD that way on my old P4 PC, i want Fedora 14 as my main desktop, no partitions or walk arounds. If this helps the mobo on that OLD pc with the P4 is a p4vmm2 v5 i believe the p4 is 2.8ghz, ram is 512mb and i was able to install a 64mb nivida card agp 4x over the stock 32mb agp card it came with!
Last year windows xp was sketchy on it, i installed i think Fedora 9 and it ran great, but at that time it was a 120GB maxtor ide, and i decided to use it as an external drive for my main pc to back up alot of goodies, in the end the drive just randomly stopped working and just a few faint clicking sounds before it died. The current hard drive i will be installing on this P4 P4VMM2 mobo is a 40GB Seagate 7200. In the end do you think i can do a HD install from a USB stick with this P4VMM2 MOBO with a 40GB Seagate 7200 HD.
I wish to use my laptop to create a system for my Soekris 4801. I don't want to take the server down for the lengthy install ( took 6 hours last time, Fedora 5 ). I want to create the image on a USB drive for the 586 Soekris server on my 686 HP laptop. Then scp the image to the Soekris and reboot and configure the server.

If so, then I could use fdisk on the device file to split it into partitions, format the partitions, and then mount them as directories.
