while upgrading to Lucid, I got the following error:

do have installed glib and dbus and can find them manually , /usr/include/glib-2.0/glib.h , but while comipling applicaiton it gives following error messages.

I'm not sure what when wrong since I have a few DVDs and they all play well in my normal DVD player, I later attempt to mount it in my Ubuntu 8.10 I'm presented with the following message:

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus). The weird thing: after looking in var/log/messages it appears that it is trying to be used by NetworkManager. And when I lookin NM, i can see iPhone as an ethernet device (cable unplugged).
I've installed previous Ubuntu and other linux distros in the past, so I have a fair idea what I'm doing.
I downloaded the official Ubuntu 10.10 ISO from Canononical, burned to CD and booted from that.
I chose to install, using an existing swap partition, and a freshly formatted (ext4) partition, with mount point "/" as root.
The installation runs fine up to where I enter my User, Computer and Login details.
The forward button to continue, remains greyed out, even tho the copying of files finishes and says down the bottom that I'm ready to go.
At this point, I can't exit, log out, or do a proper restart.
Only a forced reset of the computer gets me out of the installation.
No files get installed on the partition, but the MBR does get written to.
And obviously I get an error trying to boot to it.
I've tried this same procedure 3 times now, with exactly the same result each time.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday after trying to remove KDE and noticing that it started removing a bunch of Gnome packages as well, I've managed to fix most of the damage. I still have one thing left. To install a .rpm package I have to do it via command line as root. If I try just double clicking it now it doesn't prompt me for the root password, then it just says, "Failed to authenticate" and doesn't finish. Also I used to be able to scale the frequency of my CPUs with the applets on the Gnome panel. When I would select a different frequency it would prompt me for the root password, then change accordingly. Now when I click it nothing happens. Can somebody tell me if there's a gconf setting or a package that was removed that could cause this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have presently a (working) boot dedicated partition, where grub stuff resides, but I want to change it to a common "/boot" folder in the root partition (in a different hdd). For some reason I can't do it. The first thing I did was to copy all the things that are in the boot partition to a boot folder on the root partition. After that, I tried: grub-install /dev/hdc1 (which is odd but it's where the root partition actually is)
When I did it from the linux I have installed on my hdd, it actually did something, I don't remember all the output (except that there was something about it not being able to access hda, which is oddly the dvdrom), but it didn't work. From a live CD, the same command (grub-install /dev/hdc1) is answered with: Could not find device for /boot: Not found or not a block device. From grub's own prompt, the things are more or less the same. First of all, it does not find stage1, even though I did copy the content from the boot partition to a boot folder in the root partition.
I tried to proceed, anyway, with root (hd1,0) and setup (hd1,0) (which is /dev/hdc1, according with the "geometry" info given by grub). "Root" is accepted, but "setup" is answered with: Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 2: Bad file or directory type But the files are there. I can't "cat" the menu.lst from grub though, unlike with the actual working boot partition. The same error message. From the terminal, however, it's all there. I tried with /dev/hdc1 both mounted and unmounted, the same message. So, basically I have two questions, I guess:
1 - can I really do this sort of thing running a linux installed on a hdd, rather than a live cd, or is the live cd preferable for some reason?
2 - what am I missing?
(A note that may worth making is that I'm using the soon-to-be deprecated grub version, 0.9 or something, not grub2. I think it shouldn't be a problem since I've installed the system with the old version to begin with, but that may be irrelevant, I don't really know)

I am trying to install a program called libdvdcss0.0.1, it was a tar,gz2 file and I already extracted it via terminal to /opt/ but now that its extracted, I read the install readme file and tried going by those directions. Not working here is my results on that:

I don't know if its something I am doing wrong or what but everytime I try and install a file this way or by the programs readme file it always goes wrong in someway shape or form. The only way I have installed a program successfully is through kpackagekit and I am desperately trying to learn terminal's language here, the only thing standing in my way from switching from windows to linux entirely is these damn problems.
I'm trying to install The Sims 2 (which I'm aware currently does not run properly in wine anyway), using the multi-CD version. The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install a copy of Postgres using the .bin(I want pg Admin III as well which is why I'm not using apt-get). It's sitting in downloads so I did the following:
$ cd /home/ryan/Downloads
$ sudo chmod +x postgresql-9.0.4-1-linux.bin
$ ./postgresql-9.0.4-1-linux.bin
but I keep getting: -bash: ./postgresql-9.0.4-1-linux.bin: No such file or directory I did -ls and the file is there and I can't figure out how to get this installed.
I've been running my Dell Mini 9 with the latest alpha for 10.04 since January, but over the weekend I botched things pretty badly and decided to go back to 9.10.I saved my home directory to another machine, and proceeded to install from a 9.10 USB disk. Things didn't go terribly well (I kept seeing "devkit-disks-daemon" crashing) but the install did complete. I shutdown the netbook, yanked the USB drive and powered it back on only to be greeted the grub menu. I downloaded a mouse theme form gnome look and installed it in the themes. But it has not appeared in the pointer themes section in custimation even though it said that it is installed correctly.When I drag the file to install it again it says something along the lines of it cannot copy a directory over a directory.Where can I find where the mouse/pointer theme is located and delete it. I have searched filesystem, google and these forums and not had any luck yet.
