Ubuntu Installation :: Failed To Install File Packages
Jan 24, 2011
I get a box from update manager listing all the updates that it think I should download. I try to, and I just get this message afterwards, "Failed to fetch [URL] Hash Sum mismatch". Any solutions?
Edit- I'm running on Ubuntu 10.10 if that's any help.

Whenever I do sudo apt-get or use the Ubuntu Software Center, I can't download anything because a message comes up saying "Action requires installation of untrusted packages: The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources." I've been trying to download GIMP and Thunderbird, so... I dunno what the problem is.

I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 (this may be the thing that causes me to finally update ) with KDE 4.4 (specifically, 4.4.4 release 5). Recently (maybe the past month or so... give or take a week or two or so... first time I really remember it happening is when I realized they changed the repository for KDE 4.4 from factory to stable and switched them) >90% of the things I try to install via YAST fails with the following error... this example is me trying to upgrade avidemux from the Packman repository.
Code:
Error: RPM failed: warning: /var/cache/zypp/packages/Packman_Repository/x86_64/avidemux-2.5.3-4.pm.5.1.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 9a795806 error: %post(avidemux-2.5.3-4.pm.5.1.x86_64) scriptlet failed, signal 11
Oddly enough, the main avidemux package threw the error, but the avidemux-qt4 package didn't.
I've tried doing

I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Here's my SOURCES LIST (gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)# See http:[url].... for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution.

Yesterday after trying to remove KDE and noticing that it started removing a bunch of Gnome packages as well, I've managed to fix most of the damage. I still have one thing left. To install a .rpm package I have to do it via command line as root. If I try just double clicking it now it doesn't prompt me for the root password, then it just says, "Failed to authenticate" and doesn't finish. Also I used to be able to scale the frequency of my CPUs with the applets on the Gnome panel. When I would select a different frequency it would prompt me for the root password, then change accordingly. Can somebody tell me if there's a gconf setting or a package that was removed that could cause this?

When I look in /var/cache/apt/archives/, I see packages I recognize that I downloaded. But, I also see packages that I know I did not download, but rather were part of the initial installation of the image iso file on the CD. For example, the package for Abiword is in there. I would like to know which packages in this directory I installed, and which were part of the initial installation.
How do I know which packages are part of the installation from the image iso file on the CD? Once I know that, I would make a copy of all the other packages in this folder onto a DVD, so if I ever need to reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 I will know which packages to install over and above those part of the initial installation off the iso CD.

I put Ubuntu on my computer about a week ago, and have not been able to download many new programs or updates. For expmple, I'll go over to Update Manager and try to install something, but it will stop usually halfway through or near the end and show me an error message. usually, the message looks like this:FAILED TO DOWNLOAD FILE PACKAGESCheck your Internet connection

I found a rpm feature. If you rpm install * and one of the packages fails to install then none of the remaining packages will be installed.
Does anyone know how to use rpm to install packages with file globbing and have rpm attempt to install all of the packages?
I found that --force works, yet I do not want to install over already installed packages.
I doing this because I need to install all of the packages in a directory.

I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.
So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.
So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...
So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!
If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?

I use the show-leaves yum plugin, and sometimes I use that info to remove some unnecessary packages. But that list can be long, so I write them on a text file.
1) Instead of removing packages one by one is there a way to remove all packages written in that text file?
2) Why isn't the output of the show-leaves plugin compatible with the output of "package-cleanup --leaves"?

I tried to install some packages using "apt-get" but every time I try to install one it throws "Aborted" message, I tried several packages and combination allways with the same result.
But If I install them with Synaptics I can do it without any problem, as I know Synaptics uses apt-get to install packages so all this is a bit confusing to me .
apt-get version:
apt 0.7.25.3ubuntu9 per a i386 compiled on May 14 2010 15:33:48 I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx
Should I report some more information ?

I did a succesfull Alternative Installation of 10.04 yesterday and managed to load the packages that allowed me to install NetGear NG511v2 drivers. So far so good.
When I plug in a usb flashdrive it only mounts during boot-up. I know I can load a package that allows me to select ' hot mount usb drive' (or similar check box). How do I find what packages to install to give me this functionality?
Similarly my accessories tab shows Bluetooth as being available. There is no bluetooth on the laptop so how do I find out what packages I can safely remove?
The wider question is, is there a list of packages with their associated functions and associations?
I've already had a look at the lists of installed packages and available packages on my CD, but I have no idea what they do.

Ubuntu(10.04) was working fine, then some program crashed or something, and I just switched off (power offed) the computer. When I restarted it, this sort of stuff comes:
Code:
mount /dev on /root/dev failed : No such file or directory
and some more lines like that, and then 'Busybox' starts with [intramfs].I booted Ubuntu from a pen drive and ran fsck on the main partition. I just pressed 'y' for a long time (it asks stuff like should it continue repairing or something), and then it was done. I restarted the pc and it booted normally - it looked as if everything was fine.I started google chrome, and it said it couldn't find a personal config file .. ok. Then I tried opening a folder - nothing happens. The system monitor doesn't open, and windows that do open eventually are completely blank. I restarted the pc (this time by doing the normal restart), and it gave me the same 'Busybox' thing.I did the same procedure again, and got the same results. (ubuntu boots, programs dont work, then I restart and the Busybox thing comes again)One More Thing : The Ubuntu installed on the hard disk had all the recent updates (including the latest linux kernel) while the pen drive thing was around 2 months old I think. So maybe that's the cause?

Running:
ASUS Laptop X71SL series
GeForce 9300M GS 512 MB
Ubuntu Karmic
I can't install packages via the terminal. For example: sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
Doesnt work. It gives me:
Lser paketlistor... Frdig
Bygger beroendetrd
Lser tillstndsinformation... Frdig
E: Kunde inte hitta paketet compizconfig-settings-manager
Swedish there hehe, but basically it says the it couldnt find the the package named "compizconfig-sett.This problems occurs in several situations. Every single package i try except "upgrade" fails to find a package.
Also, the package manager "Ubuntu Software Manager" and Synaptic arent giving me any solutions. Same problems. Packages arent available and such. I have a working internet connection and the GPU drivers are installed. Everything is updated. sudo apt-get install update/upgrade is done and also done in the general update manager.
