Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Not Detecting /dev/sdb On Install ?

Apr 7, 2010

Obviously I can't install to it if I can't select it from the drop down menu. Not that it really matters, but this happens with both 64 and 32 bit versions, clean disc, no errors. I've also tried xubuntu 32-bit.

I can install Slackware on it, or for all I know every other OS. I can find it with cfdisk, fdisk, gparted, etc. I can format it in windows and use it as a drive If I try to install ubuntu from windows on it once I boot into ubuntu to finish the install it goes in an infinite loop of something like 'no root filesystem please reconfigure (or something like that), hit ok, repeates the message until I get tired of hitting ok and reboot. Always lists it under places as '500gb filesystem' even if there are no assigned partitions on it. I've rebuilt the partition table with fdisk analyzed it with disktest (drivetest? something test or testsomething) I've considered giving up and using another distro...

Ubuntu Installation :: How Makes Larger 'file Systems' Using /etc/fstab

Mar 12, 2011

I have noticed the (understandable) tendency of new Linux users to think about disk drives in the 'Windows way'; their first thought is to exchange a new drive for an existing one, rather than combine both drives for a larger 'file system'.

There are times when replacing one drive with another is indeed the correct action (aging drive, failing drive, slow drive, etc). But in other cases it may be preferable to use the inherent strength of the fstab (file system table) file to combine physical drives to become a larger 'file system'.

Lets first look at a user with an 8 gig netbook who is running out of space. Rather than replace the 8 gig flash drive with a 32 gig device, the old and new devices can be combined to yield a 40 gig 'file system':

This same principle can be applied to a user with a computer using an 80 gig hard drive, and who 'adds' a new 320 gig drive instead of replacing the 80 gig drive with the 320 gig drive:

This same principle can also be applied to building a massive 'file system' without the requirement of using RAID:

The above 12 terabyte system can be built using a basic motherboard with four open SATA ports and four 3tb hard drives. No server based equipment is needed; no raid hardware or software is required. This is just something that Linux does (and does very well).

If anyone has got an idea what it could be, it would mean a lot. These are the last prints in the log before it gets stuck:

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Deploying On Multiple Systems - Automating The Install

Jan 30, 2011

I am volunteering to assist a non-profit org with their technology, I will be presenting Ubuntu to the teachers this week and I hope to have a positive response to using Ubuntu!ith that said, the org being a bilingual school we will most likely focus on using Edubuntu. While I personally use Ubuntu and have installed it over the years on multiple laptops & deskptops, I am now facing the task of installing and maintaining on a dozen laptops and another dozen deskptops! While the install is very straight forward, installing on so many systems will be very time consuming! In addition, we would like to install additional apps such as Skype, Dropbox, French Language support, Possibly Ailurus and a few other apps.

I am looking for suggestions how to best handle this? What would be the best method to automate the install across the systems?Could the best approach be to install Edubuntu and all the apps we require on one system and then create an image from the "master system" to be used for the other systems? It seems that creating a master image would be ideal as it would include everything we need but I have never done that before

I know first to shrink the partition to make room. but i still don't know exactly. say, i shrink win7os partition to 40g and create an extended partition of 221-40 =181g, and then add partiton /boot, /swap, /home, /... and a number of partitons for vista and a number of similar partitions for fedora. But I doubt I wouldn't be able to install vista when opensuse installation is done.

Debian Installation :: When Choose Resume Partitioning Installer Then Freezes At Detect File Systems

Dec 1, 2014

I'm trying to install Debian Jessie beta2 on a UEFI laptop. The installation worked just fine before with setting in manual partitioning an EFI system partition and a root partition. But when I try to partition with root as an encrypted volume I get this error when I wanna write changes to disk:" the attempt to mount a file system with type vfat in scsi1 partition sda at /boot/efi failed"When I choose resume partitioning the installer then freezes at "detect file systems".

Because my harddrive needs specific alignment I've made beforehand in gdisk:EFI System Partition of 100mib at /dev/sda1/boot partition of 512mib at /dev/sda2/ (because I expect the installer to want a /boot too for an encrypted device)rest of harddrive reserved for root at /dev/sda3

Ubuntu Installation :: Operating System Crashing / Freezing After New Install

Feb 16, 2011

I have a fresh install of Maverick on a Toshiba r700 laptop PT310A-05N011. I am experiencing constant freezing. The computer will without warning completely freeze. Can not move the mouse or even drop to a tty shell. After about 5 seconds the fan will spin up to full speed. I then have to do a hard shutdown. Every time this has happened i have been connected up to a wireless network with firefox open while actively surfing the net. This issue did not happen before I installed the wireless driver (Broadcomm proprietary, downloaded through ubuntu Additional Drivers).

I'm not sure how relevant that is though as 90% of what i do on this laptop is surfing and i installed the driver a few hours after install. This freezing does not happen in windows 7 and I have left it running prime95 overnight once in both 7 and ubuntu without error. Does anyone know what this may be, how i might resolve it or steps I can take to diagnose it, logs i can check?

Ubuntu Installation :: No Operating Systems Found On Dual Boot Install

Aug 23, 2010

I currently have Windows 7 installed. I wish to dual boot this with Ubuntu 10.4. On a 120gb drive I allocated a large percentage to Windows and have put two partitions on the end; 1gb for swap, 15gb for Ubuntu. However, when I go to install and get to the partition manager bit it claims no operating systems have been found. Contrary to this, when I boot into the live CD it sees all the partitions, however these cannot be accessed and no error messages are displayed (However, accessing the Windows partition appeared to corrupt the install and I had to format...). When running install from the live environment the same no operating systems found error occurs. Windows 7 works fine and the drive is IDE (if this makes any difference).

Fedora Installation :: ALL Live Fedora11 CD / DVD Freezing At Install

Jul 31, 2009

This is my Fedora 11 installation review:The pc (cd2, 7600gs, 2gb ram) boots ok from any of the many Fedora live cd/dvd.After booting it goes to a nice window with a (3 colored flashing forward motion) tollbar at the bottom, where the words Generic 11 are written at the bottom right.

So far so good: no questions to answer, the Dvd is speaning out loud. 2 min later the above mentioned screen changes into a b&w verbose mode sreen. After a dozen of written lines, where the last one says "bridge firewalling ..." the drive noise gradually extinguishes, its red light turns off, the b&w verbose screen dies and even the Pc looks like dead too. Could be waiting here until next day, nothing more happens. So, I do various alt/ctrl/del, until the Cd/dvd (liteon) ejects and the pc reboots.

This is really CRAZZY. Lately I'v been trying many different distribution installations and this never happened. It's equal with any of the many fedora live cd/dvd's, window manager's, 32/64 bit. I did try last week, 2weeks before, today.... and did also try fedora Omega but is the same result at the end.I wonder if this is just me, missing some Fedora fundamental specific thing, or if ithis has happened to some of you.I browsed and searched but this looks like an uncommon issue, as I didn't find nothing similar.

Ubuntu :: Install Ubuntu Over Windows XP 64-bit And Installation Kept Freezing

Feb 19, 2011

I was trying to install Ubuntu over Windows XP 64-bit and the installation kept freezing, I decided to use the alternate installer and it worked. My only problem now is that I can't run Ubuntu for more that 2 minutes without it freezing on my and the only way to fix it is by holding my power button on my computer to shut it off. Sometimes it just restarts without freezing so I would be doing something and then my screen would turn black and reboot my PC.

I think Ubuntu is cool and I am fairly new to it. I would like to keep using it but I have to use recovery mode to be able to use it without crashing. (Low Graphics Mode or W/E it is called.) I have no idea what is causing these freezes. I have installed the Linux drivers and updated everything and it still happens to crash while I am using it outside of Recovery mode.

Ubuntu Servers :: JFS - XFS Processes - None Of File Systems Use XFS Nor JFS

Jun 22, 2011

After an update recently I noticed that my process count jumped up quite a bit. Somehow it doesn't seem related (it was an apt update I believe), but I'll just throw it out there. All of the extra processes seem to be related to XFS and JFS file system kernel processes, but none of my file systems use XFS nor JFS, just EXT3 & EXT4. Is there any safe/easy way to kill off these processes and prevent them from re-spawning? I don't find having irrelevant idle processes to be beneficial nor efficient. It's using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Only active file systems are EXT4 and EXT3.

Ubuntu :: My Experience Downgrading Ext4 File Systems

Jan 1, 2010

This post is not to ask for help, but rather to document my recent effort to downgrade my ext4 file systems to ext3 file systems. I don't know if it'll help anyone, but here it is anyway, fwiw.I am running ubuntu 9.10 on an older Dell GX-270, and had formatted my partitions with ext4 file systems. I began to notice partimage wasn't backing up my ext4 file systems and I decided to downgrade to ext3 file systems. My system has one 160GB drive and one 500GB drive. I also have an external usb2 500GB drive./home is on the internal 500GB drive. To convert it, I mounted an ntfs file system on the external drive, created a container file, put a file system on it, and mounted the container as a linux file system.

The backup was done done via rsync. rsync makes things really easy. It understands uids, gids, file permissions, and all kinds of links. That's one reason I created the container file on my external drive. NTFS doesn't understand uids gids, linux file permissions, or linux style links.

Debian :: Rsync And Different File Systems ?

Oct 21, 2010

I have 2 different mounts. One points to a local windows share(NTFS ->Samba) and the other one points to a PPTP VPN connection sharing(I belive that is NTFS too). I use "cifs" scheme in my fstab to mount these. And I use my Debian box to copy between these 2 mounts. I have started using Rsync for that purpose, I think that it works fine for now. My main problem is that it looks like Rsync cannot figure out if the files are same or not in source and target folders when I use these mounts. Most of the time Rsync copies the same files and folders over and over again even though those files and folders are on the target.

I am wondering if there is a way to make this scheme work? Being on a Vpn connection(slow) a Windows box, Rsync could have save a lot of my time if it could have recognized the files and folders that are same on both ends

Networking :: Distributed File Systems

Jan 21, 2010

Last year I was looking into fault-tolerant distributed file systems and I recall one kernel-based system that required a physical partition on each machine in the cluster, but would treat it as a single volume - ie. a write on one server would appear on the disk on all the servers.Unfortunately I didn't bookmark the specific system I was looking at, and now a year later I can't remember the details. What I don't want is NFS - a single file server with a file system mounted on various machines. What I do want is mirroring - one disk shared among multiple servers, so that if one server dies, it doesn't make any difference to the rest of them.

A bit of investigation turned up Red Hat's GFS, which kind of looks like what I want, but looks more and more like an NFS model to me. I was wondering what everyone's opinion of the various options out there were.
