Currently I installed Windows Starter, then installed Fedora 15 Alpha from the 'Fedora 15 LiveCD'.Now, I have reinstalled Windows Starter and now my grub loader has been removed.How can I get the grub loader back, with just the LiveCD?Is it possible to do this without the LiveCD?

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and as usual it destroyed my grub setup. I have done this before, so I simply booted from a live CD and typed this in the terminal:

Now, the problem with it this time is that in the past in these situations I had only Ubuntu Feisty and Windows XP installed on my machine. But I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate partition (retaining the old 7.04 installation separately) since I last had to reinstall XP. Doing the above procedure restores my grub sttings to my pre-9.04 installation (i.e. I only get Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP in the grub menu).
Every other guide I've seen is confusing the heck outta me.
I had ubuntu, and no other OS, then I installed win7, and now I want GRUB to be my MBR.
I previously had a single 160gb drive with two partitions, dual booted for Ubuntu and XP. I then installed a new SSD drive and put Windows 7 on it and of course I lost grub on the MBR. I have gone through this before so I went ahead and booted the livd CD, installed grub then ran

but then got these errors;

My Windows installation had a problem and I had to reinstall Windows. The problem now is that I need to get grub back so that I can boot into Fedora. I'm using a Fedora 11 LiveCD I had sitting around. Here are the results of the command most of the way down the first page:

I'm tempted to try the grub-install command quoted near the end of the thread, but I don't want to do anything that will hose the system.
I had 9.04, then upgraded to 9.10. After screwing it up, it won't boot. Is it possible to just reinstall Ubuntu using the CD? Cause then I would get GRUB 2. I installed kde-desktop, then it failed to boot (I selected KDM) and that somehow screwed it up.

I was told i need to reinstall the server so I've downloaded the ISO files i need.
I've connected the ISO to the machine but i don't know what yo do next.
I've read online that i need to do ls and find where the ISO is so i can boot from it.
But i get error unknown filesystem for everything so i don't know what to do?
I deleted the wrong line in grub.conf, and now cannot boot into my Windows Vista anymore. I really need to get it back right away, I am trying to do my taxes, and they are on there, and I can't get to them. I added this to grub.conf, but no luck.

Recently when I booted Windows 7, a "check filesystem" thing got up, so I let it do its thing. And now when I start Windows 7 my computer reboots right after "Windows 7" logo pops up. Is there any way I can re-install/repair my Windows 7 without losing my Ubuntu partition and all my stuff on it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot machine (Windows 7 and Debian). W7 and debian are on the same HD but on different partitions. The debian partition is an LVM encrypted one.
The W7 needs reinstalling, and as I understand the process will overwrite the debian bootloader (grub).
Question: Is there a way to save the current bootloader and recover it after I've reinstalled W7, so I wont have to reinstall debian from scratch?.
I plan to re-install W7 on the same partition it is now, without overwriting the debian partition.
I've re-installed Windows and now can't boot xubuntu 9.1. I've looked at: [URL]. I did the the fdisk -l and tried mounting each of the partitions but I couldn't mount sda4 which I think is the partition that my xubuntu is located on. A clue that this is the partition is that it is the only one of type extended as I saw in gparted. It was also the only one apart from sda5 that I wasn't able to mount and sda5 I think was an old USB partition. Anything else I could try or are you going to need the output of "fdisk -l" to get a fuller picture.

Around this time I already had a new computer. I decided to install Ubuntu on it to muck around with. However, Ubuntu also runs slowly and I have a dual-booting computer. So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.
I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.
Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

I just got a Zino HD from Dell, and was planning to use it connected to my TV, dual booting Xubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7. I did, however, run into some issues. I suspect I'm just going to have to burn a restore disc and start over, but I'd like to fix this if possible. Here's what I had to start with:
1 vfat partition (bootup?)
1 dell restore partition
1 Windows partition
Because the restore partition was a bloody 20 GB, and I could always get the restore done via disc, I reformatted it as ext4 and used it as "/". I then shrunk the Windows partition and allocated a home partition and some swap space. Note that immediately after the installer, I reformatted the home partition manually with an inode size of 128 to use with the Windows ext2 driver, but that shouldn't have really changed anything. End result file system order:
1 vfat
1 ext4 mounted as "/"
1 Windows
1 Swap
1 ext3 mounted as "/home"
I now have two problems:
1) I do not get any GRUB menu at all! It just boots directly into Xubuntu with no choices (not even memory test or restore mode).
2) I, obviously, can no longer boot Windows.
Keep in mind that this a fresh install on a brand new machine; I can't think of any reason GRUB wouldn't even show me a menu.
I have windows and I installed fedora 12 on a separate partition.
However, I had a problem with my windows XP SP 3 and had to install windows. Which I did on my C drive. However, when I re-boot I on longer get the GRUB loader displayed so cannot boot into fedora.
Is there anything I can do?
I have installed Windows 7 64-bit, Fedora 13 64-bit and Windows XP 32-bit. I had to install the 32-bit XP for some driver issues I have with obscure devices I own. Windows 7 and Fedora both boot with no issues but Windows XP is not the in the GRUB loader as it was installed after Fedora. I have tried adding a few entries to the menu.lst file but my attempts failed. The output of fdisk -l is here

I have a problem that has been vexing me for a week now. I installed Windows XP Media first and then Fedora 12. I did the instalation as simple as I could and let the disk do the work. After installation I rebooted but the windows is not part of the boot up. When I hit the "other" selection a blinking curser shows up and that's it. Now I did goto the Gedit conf. and changed "other" to "Windows" and increased the boot up sec. (hd0,0) is suppose to be for Windows, but no results, (hd2,0) is for Fedora and (hd1,0) is the restore file for Windows. I have tried to see the fdisk, the dev/ directory but don't have a clue how to get there from the terminal.

I've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.
Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?
I was getting ubuntu grub menu, and i was able to login to windows xp, windows server 2008 and ubuntu 10.10. Recently there was some problem with windows server 2008 and i had to reinstall it, once i did that i lost my grub menu. now i am getting plain windows menu with option of login into windows xp and windows 2008. So how can i restore the grub menu, so that i can login into all the three os from one point.

I tried to repair it with fc12 DVD 32bit, but it doesn't have any option for repairing grub (fc10 DVD had this option!!)

I installed Fedora 14 alongside windows, overwriting my old Ubuntu 10 partition. Unfortunately, now the GRUB loader only recognizes my Fedora partition and the built-in windows recovery utility partition. I checked the disc utility and my windows partition still definitely exists, I just can't seem to boot into it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?
