I just got this error message when Update Manager tried updating:
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:
'E:Type 'sudo' is not known on line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list'
I've been using Ubuntu for awhile, so I know my way around some stuff, but I'm completely lost on what to do here.

Recently sudo apt-get update (and all other apt-get commands) has resulted in the error:

I have apt installed, and I don't know of any changes I've made (I booted a Freebsd install dvd but I didn't end up installing (i'm looking at putting it onto an external hdd).

I still seem to be able to install/update from update manager and synaptic, but I rely on command line for apt-get update when I'm not at uni (which runs through a proxy).

On two Centos5 servers, yum gives a segmentation fault error when trying 'yum update' or 'yum check-update' after running 'yum clean' :
[Code]....
The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

I'm trying to compile and install new kernel 2.6.32.14 in my ubuntu karmic. After compiling source and executing the deb package for the kernel, I tried to run update-initramfs but got "No space on device" error. My /boot partition size is 100 MB and is currently having 37MB free. After I run the update-initramfs command I noticed that space in /boot got depleted and soon came to naught which led to no space error thrown by gzip. I believe the resultant gzipped archive is no more than 20MB...then why is the whole 37MB is being used up? Please correct me If I'm wrong here otherwise I might be left with no choice but to increase the size of /boot partition. Is there anyway I can make update-initramfs to use the temporary space from other drives(may be /tmp) when creating gzipped archive?

I have a weird question about the sudoers file. Currently, I am running "Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 8)".
I edited the sudoers file (via visudo) and added the following:
User_Alias RPTS2 = vtmtest
RPTS2 xxxxx = (jboss) /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
The user (vtmtest) issues the following command
sudo /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
and gets this message:
user vtmtest is not allowed to execute '/oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh' as root on xxxxx
When I look at the log, I see the following:
Jan 25 14:17:57 xxxxx sudo: vtmtest : command not allowed ; TTY=pts/12 ; PWD=/export/home/vtmtest ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
1. Why does sudo try to run as the root user, when I have specified in the command to run as jboss?
2. Do I need to specify anything else so that this command can run as the "jboss" user and not "root"?

I wanted to installed transmission on my buntu server box 10.10 tonite so from my laptop top i ssh'd into it...which took an unordinary amount of time.. went to type in sudo apt-get install transmission half way through each word at the terminal prompt it would just hang...had to wait then it would recognize my typing and i could continue....pressed enter waited a long time; then noticed i coulnd't connect to the repos?

I can make aliases fine by editing the .bashrc file in my home directory, but the first thing I do when I open a terminal window is sudo su so I don't have to type sudo in front of every command. The problem is, I am then not able to use my aliases. How can I make aliases that work after I run the sudo su command?

I'd like to start a background job using the sudo command and route its output to a file. This presents a problem because the prompt for the password doesn't work properly. It looks something like this when I try it:
Code:
Mac:server user$ sudo php crossdomain_server.php > data/crosscomain_output.txt &
[3] 30303
Mac:server user$ Password:
[3]+ Stopped sudo php crossdomain_server.php > data/crosscomain_output.txt
Mac:server user$
Basically I'm not properly prompted for the password and as soon as I type anything in my background job fails because it didn't receive the password. Is there any way to execute a sudo command by supplying the password on the same line as the command?
