I'm setting up Lucid for a friend and I've come across a strange problem - the desktop is bigger than the screen. The laptop is a Fujitsu Amilo Pro V2035 with a VIA S3G Unichrome graphics adapter. The desktop resoltion is 1600 ish - but the actual screen size is 1280x800. I've tried changing this in the Display settings but this results in an unreadable screen (refresh settings at a guess).

View 7 Replies View RelatedIm running a wee Aspire One, 1024*600 with an external monitor 1024*768 (maverick desktop edition- 10.10) I have them set up independently, the external is to the right, and above my aspire. I have set this up in the monitors options. But it seems the desktop environment (although not the backgrounds) extend off to the right of my aspire (under the external) and to the left of my external- (above my aspire).
I know that it may be nit-picking, but it is a right pain when I 'loose' stuff on this phantom desktop space. For example- when i move my cursor into one of these spaces- and have to wiggle it about till it pops onto one of the screens. Also- i'd like my screensaver to pop up on both screens, and span them both- not just be repeated on both...
Ubuntu 10.04-32 bits I just installed it, and desktop is bigger then the monitor, so I can't get to the menu to change the resolution. I don't know what desktop it's running.

I installed Ubuntu using wubi, But I didnt assign much space, probably like 17 gigs or something. My geting a pop up everytime my ubuntu starts up saying i got low disk space, very low disk space, Im runing ubuntu 10.10. How do I add more disk space? How do i make the partition bigger.

When I started to upgrade one to Natty with the Upgrade Manager, it told me it wanted to install 205 new packages (along with upgrading 877).205 new packages seems like a lot of growth in the minimal install.Why do I need those 205 packages?Then I looked at the minimal CD page where I saw that the minimal CD itself (which has lists of packages not the packages) grew from 15.6 to 22MB.So, did the minimal install just bloat up with Natty or what? Is there an even-more-minimal install?

I have tried two other graphics cards with the same result. It is therefore impossible even to install it. I have installed many other versions without problems. This PC works perfectly with Windows XPVistaWindows 7 and other Ubuntu versions.

After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.
i am trying to instal kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. i have an ati radeon hd 4600 with a hdmi cable going into the 22" lcd. The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.
View 1 Replies View RelatedTrying to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop (amd64) on this brand new system:
I connected the Dell ST2410 24" Full HD Widescreen LCD to the HDMI port on the ATI card and Windows 7 boots up just fine.
So then I put in the "ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso" CD in drive and reboot the system. I see the Ubuntu logo with the dots for a while and then the LCD goes black. The LCD reports that there is no signal from the system. The power light in front of the LCD goes from white to amber. The keyboard stops responding.
I power off everything, remove the Ubuntu CD and reboot the system and it works fine again with Windows 7.
The CD has no problems. At boot time, I checked it for defects and it reports no errors. At boot time, I used this same CD to check the system for memory errors. No memory errors. I used the same CD to install Ubuntu on other systems and had no problems.
The 16X DVDRW Drive has no problems. In Windows 7 it can play CDs and DVDs.
I have upgraded an IBM T41 laptop from UNR 10.04 to 10.10 beta. Upgrade ran fine.
After rebooting, I see the splash screen, and eventually the screen goes white. It does this over a few transitions, most likely in the time between X starting and having the desktop loading (I have auto logon enabled).
Once it is all white, I can Ctrl-Alt-F1 to the terminal. Since then I have disabled auto login but same result. I have also removed Unity (I use UNR and the T41 doesn't have a 3d graphics card), and have the same white screen.
Only after removing xserver-xorg-video-radeon, can I get to the Ubuntu Desktop (in 16 colour glory).
The Thinkpad T41 has a Radeon Mobility 7500 in it, and ran fine in UNR 10.04 (which is also a different kernel).
There was no xorg.conf in use (although I have added one during testing and forced the radeon driver to load) and I reviewed xorg log but didn't see anything.
After upgrading my netbook (Eee 1005HA) from Ubuntu Lucid to Maverick, I can log in okay, but it crashes back to the login screen a couple of minutes after logging in, after the desktop has loaded. I haven't been able to find anything in syslog/dmesg/etc. about why this is happening, but it isn't happening on my other laptop which I just upgraded to Maverick as well.
Edit: memtest86+ showed no errors and the live USB desktop works fine.
I have a problem after installing Debian and running it on my machine. Instead of taking me to a splash login screen, it instead remains a black screen like a console where I type in my username and password, and it remains in this black command line mode beginning ben@ben-desktop:~$. Like it does in a terminal. What can I do to resolve this? This is completely new to me and hasn't happened to me in Ubuntu or Mint. I am familiar with using the terminal for the odd task but obviously I can't use it like this without a visible desktop.

My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

Both screen are identical 22" LCD LG W2246 Monitors.
I have Dual X-Display setup.
I am using Gnome Desktop.
The left hand screen displays everything, menus, panels, background and of course desktop launchers.
The right hand screen displays everything except the desktop launchers.
If I create a new launcher on the left it appears on the left desktop when created.
If I create a new launcher on the right it appears on the left and can not be dragged over to the right screen.
I am very happy with Ubuntu 10.04 that I downloaded, burnt to CD and installed (I am a newbie to Linux), but I am finding a little problem on an old Sony lap-top, with a rather old-fashioned almost square screen.The top bar of any screen image is just off the top, and I can only see a quarter of it, which makes using the max/min and cancel buttons a bit hard to use. I know I can resize the screen, but it goes back to the original next time it is used. Is there a permanent fix?

Most simple guides recommend use of dd to copy the whole partition byte by byte.
I'm moving to the new drive because I don't have enough space on the old drive, so I don't want to simply clone the partition. Instead I need the destination partition to be bigger. Would dd work well in that case?
Assuming that I use same partition types on the new drive, would I be able to use simple cp with appropriate settings?
