General :: Partitioning - Copy GNU Installation From A Smaller Partition To A Bigger Partition?

I got a new hard disk for my laptop and I want to move my Gentoo installation from old HDD to new.
Most simple guides recommend use of dd to copy the whole partition byte by byte.
I'm moving to the new drive because I don't have enough space on the old drive, so I don't want to simply clone the partition. Instead I need the destination partition to be bigger. Would dd work well in that case?
Assuming that I use same partition types on the new drive, would I be able to use simple cp with appropriate settings?
I can take apart my computer and fix a problem and then re-install the partitions. Hopefully I won't have to re-install, but I want to make backups just in case
-HP laptop with a windows (NTFS) and an Ubuntu (ext3) partition ~ 500GB total -Iomega 1TB external hard drive partitioned into a 500GB NTFS storage, 250GH BLANK ext3 Linux Backup, and 250GB BLANK NTFS Windows Backup.
I want to copy my windows and linux to their respective 250GB spaces on the External HD.
1.) Can you direct me to places on the net that describes this in detail? 2.) Can I copy a partition while running that partition? 3.) Will copying C:/ in windows over to the external HD copy entire partition? 4.) Can I copy a Laptop partition to a external HD partition that is bigger? 5.) Do I have to use partition manager software or can I do this from terminal/cmd prompt?
I'm a linux user for some time now and most stuff I can figure out myself. Though, this one drives me crazy and I did not find any information on the internet.I have a partition, say, Code: /dev/sda1 , which is 128MB big. When I copy it using Code: dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/home/me/backup_sda1.img , the resulting file is 134MB big. Now my problem is that I want to copy that partition as-is to a CF card, which does not work because the image is bigger than the partition on the CF card.Why does dd create bigger files? Shouldn't it be exactly same sized like the source?
I tried to just have two partitions (recovery and ubuntu), but because of the different file systems, and the placement of the hp recovery partition, it has to be right in the middle. This is basically what I want to do:
1) Reinstall Hardy Heron on a new (smaller) partition from the free space partition. 2) Once it's working properly, format the rest of the hard drive (getting rid of the recovery partition) and create a single ext3 partition. 3) Install another distro on this new partition.
Does anyone foresee any complications with all this slicing and dicing of my hard drive for which I should/could prepare?
Is there any software to clone Linux partition? No matter they are paid or free software, I'll need them. The problem is that if I clone a linux partition to a bigger or smaller partition size, it will crash.
I have read several manuals and online html on how to clone a partition to a greater one, I am still not sure about what to do.

What is the recommended procedure to clone i.e. /dev/mdx (/usr) partition to a greater one, say /dev/mdy, to accommodate for growth, whilst preserving attributes including timestamps (and yes, that means also including ctime).All of # cp -ax SOURCE DEST, # rsync -ax SOURCE DEST and # cpio modify ctime.Some sites recommend dd, i.e.:
URL....However, I am not sure what will dd copy do with end of partition, and will it see the remaining space on /srv (it's contents are dummy and will be overwritten).
I have recently ghosted, using g4u, an 80 gig drive to a 30 gig drive. The data size is about 15 gig so no problem there.The system does work and it doing everything it should, except for some errors in dmsg log.The thing is though, that the system works! all the services are running and live.And i have years worth of customizations in this machine. Has been running for several years, so i dont just want to reformat and reinstall. Its hard to get linux the way you want it sometimes!So my question is this, is there a way to fix my partition or somehow tell the machine what the current boundries <i>should</i> be?
I installed Ubuntu using wubi, But I didnt assign much space, probably like 17 gigs or something. My geting a pop up everytime my ubuntu starts up saying i got low disk space, very low disk space, Im runing ubuntu 10.10. How do I add more disk space? How do i make the partition bigger.
I have several partitions on my hard drive, and like to use the 'Create Custom Layout' option during the installation process, to make sure that I don't loose any of my existing partitions or the data on them.
I have attempted a minimal F12 installation from Fedora 12 DVD. But the 'Create Custom Layout' option is not an option in the menu.
How do I install F12 and tell anaconda exactly which partitions I want to use and format?
My current working partition layout is shown in the attached screenshot.

This allows me to share existing partitions between my current working F10 root partition, and the newly-installed F12 root partition. So if there are problems with the new F12 installation, I still have a working F10 system to fall back on.
The other partitions with data on will be mounted when the intiall installation has been completed
I use Fedora 12 AMD64 and I partition my HDD with Default partitioning what happen when temp partition is full by files ?Can this happen ? for example my temp partition full by files and my system can not use temp partition .!can I say my Fedora clear temp after each reboot .?

I am having no other OS in the pc. just planning to have ubuntu. no dual boot needed.
When I recently installed Redhat onto my system, I had 2 hard drives in it, and apparently the default usage for the two hard drive is to put them all into 1 volume, so now I have files scattered across both hard drives (with boot on /dev/sdb). LVM won't let me remove the /dev/sdb partition due to not enough room in volume or whatever. What is the easiest way to shift everything, including the boot partition, onto one hard drive so I can remove the other one without reinstalling everything?
My partition /dev/sda3 on an SSD drive doesn't contain any filesystem, but it contains garbage. How do I do a TRIM/DISCARD operation on the whole partition?
I've not jumped on the Alpha/Beta upgrade's this time round so have decided to upgrade by doing a fresh install. I'm using the normal desktop install cd via usb. On the drive setup I choose to manually setup the partitions. I deleted the partition which help Lucid. Created a new partition with the root path. All good so far. I selected my home partition and selected use as 'ext2', entered /home as the mount point. Clicking ok to return, showed the /home partition as marked to be formatted, I was unable to change this ... so I decided to quit the installer and reboot ...
1st problem ... the root partition for Lucid was deleted, and a new empty partition created, despite the fact I had not confirmed the actions.
2nd problem ... rebooting with the live cd (which I'm on now) and running the installer, it hangs when I select manual partitioning.
I successfully partitioned my desktop with Gparted and made it into an XP/Ubuntu dual boot.
Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:
How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.
It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.
I am trying to install a box here where my /storage partition is about 2.5T.I had setup the partitioning with suse, while testing, and all worked well.Now when trying to install CentOs 5.5 it gives me an error, that my boot partition is on a gpt partition and this machine cannot boot that.Also I don't see the option to create XFS partitions from the installer.Can 5.5 support GPT @ install time?
My root partition is formatted as ext3 and I would like to perform a bad blocks scan on it. Normally e2fsck -c -c does this, but you can not run it on a mounted partition. I know it is possible to force a fsck to run at boot by creating the file /forcefsck but is it possible to specify that it should also check for bad blocks? If not, what is the recommended way to check for bad blocks on the root partition? I would like to avoid having to create a rescue disk and boot off of it.
I am about to get a new laptop here soon and I was planning a dual boot like I have on my current laptop (Win7 and Ubuntu), but I have something special in mind. I looked around the forum to see if there was anything like what I had or if it was even possible but I didn't see anything quite like this.I was wondering if this was even possible, and if so, would anyone be able to tell me what filesystem I should use for my windows swap partition?
I want to install Linux Mint 11 (just came out) to a USB drive. My USB drive is 34 gb. So I want to put a 1-2 gb partition on it and install mint just to that. Is that possible? I am a noob so I want to use [URL] but the screenshots don't show an option for a partition or state any extra steps that might be involved in doing this (there's a tutorial for doing this for one of the Ubuntus using fdisk, but I don't have any linux installs right now).
I have fedora 11 and window installed. I reduced the windows partition in order to enlarge the fedora. The fedora partition is widespread, and puts gparted lvm2. I can not enlarge nor palimpset or with gparted, I can only delete or format it.
80 gb harddisk, using double boot XP/ubuntuUbuntu 'got' 14 gb free space but on the 'XP side' of the harddisk there's about 40 gb of free space left, how can I partion this to Ubuntu?
When I first switched from windoze to Fedora I trimed a bit of space off the end of the HDD, formatted it to ext3 and installed Fedora 14 there. I have now completely rebuilt the machine and put a 2TB drive in. My intention was to upgrade to Fedora 15, but after a few weeks trying to get the new gnome to anything resembling useful, I gave up and decided to go back to the reliable 14.
I tried the old drive, and everything worked great, so I though no problem, clone that over to the new drive, and job done, no need to mess about for weeks getting all my settings back. I booted from the old drive with both connected and ran gparted, It sees both drives but won't let me copy the old partition. It complains about 'LMV is not yet supported' I tried booting from a gparted ISO with the same result.
How can I get this sorted? I've got work needing done, I don't have time to start from scratch (*AGAIN*),
So I installed Jaunty Jackallope and Im really liking it. The thing is when I installed I just let the system do the dual boot partition and I think it assigned Ubuntu a very small amount of hard drive space. Now I want to download some updates and it says it doesnt have enough free space (it only needs like 500 megs so I must have a real small partition). Is there anyway to fix this or do I have to reinstall?? If so, how do I uninstall and do it right?
I downloaded gparted. i would really like to make my ubuntu partition bigger, i've got over 200 gigs of free space on my windows partition. i've played with it some and cannot seem to figure out what to do.
I have a dual-boot Vaio, with Windows Vista (for WOW only,I promise!) and Ubuntu 10.10. I have a HDD with 250 GB, where 170GB is for Ubuntu and around 40 GB for Windows and a Swap that is 6 GB. This Swap seems a little too big, so how o I edit its size (make it smaller like 3GB) and then add the "free space"-leftovers to the big Ubuntu partition ( / )?
I purchased a FREECOM 1,5TB external USB-HDD and find out that there was FAT32 as FS. I windos there are not posasible to make bigger FAT32-partition than 32GB. I wan't to have windos-FS to use my work and on my freinds computers.Do you think I could format to NTFS or keep the FAT32? I don't have any big files.
I spend the vast majority of my time in Ubuntu, but every so often I still encounter the odd errand that requires a free copy of Windows that came with my hardware.
So I have Windows 7 on my laptop which I like slightly better than XP and a whole lot better than Vista. I am not in there a lot besides that its required for a web design class and sometimes for a few stubborn games, but I would very much like to copy my Windows 7 partition to a 100gb partition on my TB HDD.
How do I do it? Keep in mind, I am barely two tiers above noob on a scale of 1 to 20. I am working on it though.
I also want this partition to be bootable. I dont care if I lose the rest of the data on the disk. I want to redo everything anyway. I definitely want it to boot though, not just for the data to exist.
