Wen I am on the desktop I have to put the mouse on the top bar in order to see File, Edit,View, Places, Help.when I launch firefox it takes over all the screen/desktop.Is this the way unity supposed to be ?
View 2 RepliesFirefox has taken the whole screen and has no controls top right to close or resize the window. Also it hides the panel at the bottom. Whenever hovering over something with a tooltip, the whole screen goes black for a fraction of a second. Otherwise it seems to operate normally.

a few months ago i did a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04 64-bits. it works perfectly. i'm using firefox 5.0, and in about it says mozilla firefox for ubuntu canonical 1.0.
every now and then, firefox behaves like a runaway train and starts using up all available memory, and using 100% processor time. this has been going on for a week or so. the only remedy is to kill firefox and restart it.
i'm not sure what causes this problem, but i am starting to suspect that it may be caused by flash, java, or some other plug-in or add-on that i have installed.
my add-ons are:
- adblock plus 1.3.9
- adblock plus pop-up addon 0.2.7
- delicious bookmarks 2.3.1
- delicious extension 2.3.1
- flash-aid 2.1.1
- global menu bar integration 1.0.6
- memory restart 1.4
- stumbleupon 3.91
- ubuntu firefox modifications 0.9.1
with the exception of memory restart 1.4 all these add-ons have been installed for a long time, without ever causing any problems. the problems started before installing memory restart.
my java version is icedtea, installed from the repository. i'm frequently using sweet home 3d (a java program) that runs without any problem. it doesn't make a difference whether i have sh3d running or not, the ff problem occurs regardless.
i also have installed ubuntu restricted extras version 43. videos videos don't cause problems. vimeo videos cause problems on occasion when switching to high definition and/or to full screen, but that is a known vimeo problem.
the problems certainly start when i don't use my computer for a longer period of time. i have disabled the screen saver/energy saver, but that doesn't seem to solve the problem. today i had the problem shortly after visiting a website, reason why i'm starting to suspect that the problem could be linked to some plug-in that website uses.
just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04LTS and upon first reboot it gets stuck at the splash screen.. it just keeps loading over and over, nothing happens.I don't have the liveCD as I just did the download from the internet via Synaptic Softwarethis is what I tried:hit ESC when GRUB menu loads.. tried to hit "e" on the boot option and nothing happens.. I was told changing quite splash to nomodeset would fix it but it doesn't even say quiet splash, unless someone wants to walk me through it.I'm soo frustrated, I have tons of e-mails and documents that I need to save.is there a fix to get me back in just so I can copy my emails and docs and do a fresh install?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid not on a separate disc partition but installed right on my Windows (7) partition. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I restarted my computer and then the system was scanning the disc then suddenly after the disc check, the computer restarted and when it was supposed to launch Ubuntu, the screen went completely white. I tried restarting again, I manage to get to where I choose to boot with Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I choose Ubuntu and the same happens again: white screen. It doesn't go any further than this and the only thing the computer can do is boot with Windows 7. Has anyone had the same problem? Also, is there a way I can access my files (saved in Ubunutu) from Windows? If I can manage to copy these files then I don't mind reformatting the whole disc.

I know if I resize the window below 75% or some thing like that it does not start full screen however I need the window to launch at like 85% and not full screen. This is the most frustrating thing I don't know what Canonical was thinking. I put it in if you have to however make it easy to undo..

When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. I would like to bypass this screen entirely,and just shutdown reboot from the desktop. Only I use this machine at home ,no none else needs to log on. Is there any way to do this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm have much computer experience but am new to Ubuntu. I typed in sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop and it tells me it's already installed. Good. So it should work. I type sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start and the screen goes blank for 8 seconds three times in a row and then back to the command line. I have also tried gdm start without the path before and it says GDM already running. Aborting!

At the end of the day when I'm getting ready to leave, I close out of firefox, and it takes one of my duo core processors all the way to 100% and sit at the top of my processes in my Conky for 5-10 minutes before it finally closes. View 3 Replies View RelatedMy Firefox used to start instantly, or at least near instant, but since yesterday it took about 30 sec to launch. Opening subsequent windows is near instant, but once all windows are closed it would take a long time to open again.
When I open it up in a terminal, it has absolutely no error message, clean start up and shutdown.
I turned up the CPU clock speed from 1.2GHz to 2.0GHz and it doesn't seem to help. Other programs starts fine too, so I kind of ruled out performance issue.
Yesterday I also tinkered with compiz settings and also installed the cairo dock and some media codecs. But I can't pinpoint when does it happen exactly, I also struggle to draw any relationship if there is any. And if it matters Firefox is 3.6.10 and Ubuntu is 10.04.
When I start Firefox 4 on my Ubuntu 10.4 laptop, it takes about a minute for Firefox to actually load and display itself.

I made an error by downloading and installing a new version of firefox. I do not manage any more to install the flash! I would also play World of warcraft but I have a little problem. I know it is not precise. But my english teacher would we make a discussion of anything in English, for 30 minutes. I have Apache, PHP and MySQL installed.
I also moved my web folder to /var/www but still can't see them.
I can see the default html file: "It works!" but not my files.
Firefox is still asking what it should do with the file, if it should open or save it. But I can't see them.
When I click on a hyperlink inside a PDF, email (Thunderbird), or other document (ex. AbiWord, LibreOffice) Firefox attempts to launch and it shows in the gnome2 panel (in the window manager with all the other applications) but when I click on it in the window manager to un-minimize/focus Firefox the browser crashes. Odd thing is this is only a problem if the browser is not yet open. If I have previously launched Firefox then click an external link it opens in a new tab just fine. I upgraded from Firefox 4 to 5 and the problem persists. I've only recently noticed this so it could be the result of something I did (installed/uninstalled) though I don't know what I could have done. Or, maybe I never noticed because I almost always have an open browser window.

From the login screen, if I press on shutdown on the bottom right, it will indeed shutdown !
This is a fresh install of 11.2 KDE-4.3.1.
After reviewing all of the 11.2 Milestone 64-bit DVDs, Milestone 1 - 8 - I was always able to launch Firefox from Thunderbird in search of add-ons or an html link.
It stopped working in RC1, RC2.
I thought this was resolved for openSUSE 11.2. The problem still exists!
Now, thinking the problem was with Thunderbird 3.0.4b. I navigated to Configure Desktop --> Personal Settings --> General --> Default Applications:
Changed Email Client from KMail to Thunderbird
From within KMail I can launch Firefox. However, Thunderbird 3.0.4b does NOT launch Konqueror nor Firefox 3.5.4 !!
In addition the Thunderbird 3.04b Help does NOT work.
Could the setting of Default Applications be broken in KDE-4.3.1 " release 6 " ??
I'm sure I cannot be the only one experiencing this at home???
I'm trying to set up the Firefox extension 'Web Developer' to view the source of a webpage with gedit.
I've done this previously on Windows with notepad just by adding the command 'notepad %1' to the appropriate entry in 'Web Developer'.
In Firefox under Linux Mint 9, I tried replacing that command with 'gedit %U' but nothing happens. I can launch gedit from a terminal, but how do I get it to run from another application?
So I recently got a VPS from hostgator and am now looking to get xwindows or xorg installed so that I can launch firefox from my VPS, the issue is that I don't want to install a complete desktop environment. Is there a way to accomplish this? I have enabled X11 forwarding in ssh and in the putty session, but continue to receive errors about displays.

My internet connection is up, but the download stops and goes, and when I try using firefox, it takes a minute to even start to load any page. I have the system monitor up and it is telling me that the network is not receiving anything except for these bursts of data aprox. every 30 seconds.

That makes ubuntu very slow and I cant play video's on ubuntu because of the lack of video memory again, so is there anyway I could boot ubuntu from my desktop but instead of my windows vista and ubuntu running it will only be ubuntu running so It can get all the ram,video memory and that stuff? I need a answer quick because I have to be installing this program that takes up alot of ram on windows and I need to get to my work on open office on ubuntu!!!
