Ubuntu Installation :: Hdmi - Lcd Flashing Screen/cant View Whole Of Desktop?
Mar 27, 2010
i am trying to instal kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop. i have an ati radeon hd 4600 with a hdmi cable going into the 22" lcd. The problem is i cant view the whole desktop, like i can only see a part of the corner, and all of the icons are massize. The search bar at the bottom comes to half my screen size, making installation impossible to see. Plus i can only use live cd mode using safe graphics mode. i am new to linux finding this quite confusing.

I'm having this problem with Ubuntu 9.10, it has happened the three times I have tried to install it.
I have made a video showing the problem: [url]
After upgrading and rebooting, the flashing login screen appears and it is not possible to use the GDM.
I have tried to install KDM and it works, but when trying to load gnome I get the blinking bars again.
I have also tried this (and got the same problem); installing the Nvidia driver (manufacturer), installing the Nvidia driver (repositories) and installing no screen driver.
I think the problem is with GNOME, and not with the graphics card.
Now I have installed windows xp :-/, for the first time in a whole year, cause it is not possible for me to use Ubuntu 9.10 at all.

I'm helping a friend set up his new pc and we're having a lot of trouble getting his second monitor to work.He has a GeForce GTS250 video card which has a HDMI output port as well as VGA. His main monitor is connected via the VGA and works fine. The second monitor is a Soniq QV320H TV which he wants to connect via HDMI. The nvidia settings configuration shows both monitors (set up as separate x-screens) but the only output on the Soniq is a black screen which flashes "unsupported" about every 2 seconds. Currently the resolution is set to auto (1280x1024) but we've also tried lower resolutions (down to 800x600) with no success.

On boot into new 11.04 32bit system, the desktop background came up and nothing else, no panel no icons. Right clicking brings up the dialog box for create folder change background, etc. but it is flashing on and off, after a bit of effort used it to change the background, but still no panel and same thing with further mouse clicks! This was a semi-clean install from a LiveCD with download updates checked and a separate /home partition.

I've just downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) and every time I boot i get a flashing screen. I didn't have any problems at all with the LiveCD. The graphics card and my wireless adapter worked out of the box. But after the install it won't work. I can choose the OS in GRUB and then there's a purple screen. After that the screen starts flashing and I can hear the login sound.
I have tried using "nomodeset" but that didn't work either. There is no flashing, just a purple screen all the time. But it was possible to enter tty. I also tried booting the Recovery Mode but it just loads and then a pink flashing screen appears.
The graphics card is a XFX Radeon HD6870 1GB.

I just recently installed Ubuntu 10.04. Every time I boot it up the screen flashes, like going off, then on again. It won't stop doing that. I can see the screen for 1 sec then it goes black, and keeps repeating this.

Just installed Ubuntu 9.10 side by side with XP. When trying to run ubuntu from Grub the terminal screen opens but then starts to flash. This makes it difficult to type and login. When I do eventually login it just goes no further than a terminal prompt. If I use recovery mode the screen does not flash but still cannot get to the desktop

When I try and install Ubuntu 9.10 it gets to the flashing Ubuntu logo, then the screen just goes black. It then says: (initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system. I also tried the disk on a another computer and it worked fine, and I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 on this computer before without a problem.

I have a desktop with AMD Sempron 3000+, 1.2GB RAM, VIA S3G Unichrome Pro IGP, VIA SATA RAID controller based disks, PS/2 mouse and keyboard running Windows XP. Wanted to move to years ago favourite (linux based systems), I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 for i386 and am trying to install both using CD as well as USB. After the Ubuntu start-up menu for installation, I select install Ubuntu option, turn off 'quiet' so that I can see what happens. The screen goes blank dark with a flashing cursor at the top.
In the kernel messages, the see that it has detected the processor, set the clock, assigned the PS/2 keyboard to input3 and then says:
[1.911624] isapnp: no plug and play device found
After this, the system hangs. Keyboard doesn't work.

became immediate to me is that the docks on the top and left sides of the screen lack icons. On top of that, when you hover over where I suppose icons should be, the black tooltip that comes up is labeled with a white rectangular block instead of telling me what the icon represents. It looks as if the applications function fine regardless of this phenomena; I can click on different parts on the dock and the icons' links still pull up the program with no issue.
Opening up Firefox, however, led to the screen flashing a colorful pixelated pattern that looks like what happens to an image when you take it into Photoshop and run it through a coarse mezzotint filter. It flashes occasionally while using Firefox, both around the window, on top of the window, and on the entire screen. I've also found that I can't run Firefox for more than five-ten minutes without the system freezing on me (mouse won't move, screen doesn't change).

After installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, I restarted my machine. I removed the disk, but now when it starts, it never gets to GRUB. Instead, it just takes me to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can't type in anything and holding shift doesn't take me to GRUB.

Despite being warned from a friend of mine who works for Intel that the new version of Ubuntu 11.04 sucked? I upgraded from 10.10 which worked perfectly fine and did everything that I wanted it to except work with my COBY MP3 player which is what I hoped 11.04 would do. It all worked great until I rebooted. I previously had the main screen on the left where all of the menus are and the right screen was the 2nd monitor.
Once it rebooted it let me login and loaded the desktop but the main screen is now on the right with that stupid application bar going up the side, all of my folders, etc. are all there but NOTHING is clickable, even the icons up in the right corner where you logout, etc. will not do anything other than highlight that you have clicked on them, the hard drive light flickers for a few moments then nothing.
Also the left hand screen is completely blank unless I move the mouse cursor through it. If I just leave the computer sitting there eventually the screens go dark and the monitor lights start flashing like it is supposed to but if I wiggle the mouse the screens come back on and the mouse is there but there is no login prompt to let me log back in. Pardon my French but this OS is a piece of <bleep> and sucks just like I was told.

I recorded the following video of the boot process: [URL] ....
The disk is fine (I ran fsck), GRUB in OK. Could it be X?
I can boot in safe-mode and also have internet connection, so not everything is lost ...

I have just updated to 10.04 on my Dell Insperon 8200 laptop, and all seems well with Linux. My problem is that although it shows in Grub Windows XP will not load. I just get a blank screen with a flashing cursor.I have tried to grub-mkconfig and grub-update, both of which reported successful results. However on reboot I still get a blank screen for windows. This was not an issue with 9.04 and 9.10.so I don't think it is the machine.

I cannot install Ubuntu 10.04, or even boot into the live CD. I'm not an expert, but I've used Ubuntu for several years, and I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything stupid... Here's what happens when I boot with the Ubuntu 10.04 live CD: I get a purple screen with just an accessibility(?) symbol at the bottom (this lasts 15 seconds). The screen goes black, with a flashing cursor, then changes back to purple, this time with an Ubuntu logo, with 5 dots acting as a progress indicator (this lasts about 1 minute). The screen switches to standby. The CD drive continues to make noises for another minute or so, then stops.
I physically removed my graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 5770), and plugged the monitor straight into the VGA port on the motherboard. Now the CD boots up fine. I could try installing Ubuntu at this point, while my graphics card is unplugged, and then plug my graphics card back in, and see if it starts working then.

But when i select the new kernel(Linux 2.6.35) from the GRUB during booting, i am not able to see the GNOME desktop. What i am able to see is only the shell. Kindly tell me how to see the desktop after i boot into the new kernel.

was trying to get rid of the ubuntu menu and try to change how the desktop looks. It's hard to explain but it was first the desktop you get when you first start up ubuntu on NetbookThen I somehow turned in into a desktop esque menu. With all the icons and stuff. Today my battery accidentally fell out as I moved it around and when I restarted my computer all went fine until the screen started flashing. On the upper right hand corner, was a transparent square with 2 arrows when it flashes. It still showed that I connected to my wireless and etc.

My wallpaper, regardless of what is chosen, flashes to blue/green (like an old Win95 desktop color) every 10-15 seconds. It stays that way for a second, then goes back to what is set. Also, it seems to 'fade in' to the blue/green, then fades back to the chosen wallpaper (albeit a very fast fade). Icons on the desktop are unaffected.I've tried disabling all desktop effects, and it still does it. The only way to stop it is to reboot, which seems to fix the problem for 24 hours or so, then it starts again.
