When I try to start the program Gparted in Ubuntu, the window opens up, and it looks like it is initializing, but then it just disappears, without an error message or anything to go by.

I have just installed Lucid Lynx as after a live run of it I thought it was about time to upgrade. Everything ran smoothly in the live version so I backed up my files and installed it. When I went to boot I get this -
Grub loading, please wait ...
Error 2
The strange thing is it seems to be specific to the computer. I have an older, lower spaced desktop, computer that I tried the hard drive in and it worked fine. Problem is its too low spaced for what I want so it seems the install went ok but its something with the computer? How I would be able to boot into the install?

I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot
This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?

After getting some updates like 3 days ago, I get this message: "minimal BASH-like editing is supported. For the first word TAB list possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device/file completions. sh:grub>_
What do I do to boot my system? Previously I was able to select from the grub menu. But not in this case. Any suggestions. I have an XP system as well on the same hard drive. I used wubi to install Ubuntu 9.10.

KMail 1.11.4, KDE 4.2.4: I'm migrating from WinXP to Mandriva, and installed KMail at the weekend. Works fine, but I have a niggle - the message list displays headers grouped by month order. I'd like the option of having a simple list (no groups), and suspect that it could be done - but I haven't been able to find out how. I've checked in the Handbook without success, and a search in LQ hasn't turned up anything yet.Any suggestions gratefully received. If this isn't the right place for a KMail query,

I want to resize and eventually remove some partitions on my drive but I need to know how this will affect grub and what to do if I need to fix it.I currently have 3 standard partitions and 1 extended partition on a 160Gb drive.
1st Partition -Windows XP about 60Gb with about 35Gb used. NTFS
2nd Partition -Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 amd64 about 40Gb, 22Gb used ext4
3rd Partition -Linux swap about 2.5Gb
Extented Partition -Ubuntu 9.10 about 49Gb with 23Gb used ext4
I'd like to shrink the Extended partition down and add the space to the 2nd partion where Lucid is. Eventually, I'll want to delete the whole extended partition and add all the space to the Lucid partition.
After using GParted to resize these partitions, what will happen when I boot? Will I need to tell grub where the swap and 9.10 are? I am not changing the start of the first two partitions so I would assume there will not be any problem with them (I'm not sure how moving the start of the swap might affect the Lucid installation though).

I have been working on this for all afternoon.I have found links here and elsewhere, with no solution.(currently) I am using crontab to execute the shutdown command based on a schedule. M-W, Th-Fr, and Sat.The message argument does not work. I need a Gui warning message before the Pc kicks the user off.Zenity does not work directly with crontab, so I put it in a script:#!/bin/bash Zenity --warning --text "The library is closing in 10 minutes. This PC will automatically shutdown in 5 minutes. Please save your work now, to prevent data loss."

I have a Dell monitor attached to a Dell laptop. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 x64.
Spec:
Latitude E6500 : Intel Core 2 Duo P8800(2.66GHz,1066MHz,3MB)
Base Options : 256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS 160M Graphic Card 1 S
Display : 15.4in Widescreen WUXGA (1920X1200) 2CCFL
Dell 2001FP (attached using DVI)
When I try to boot into Ubuntu with the monitor attached I get a DVI: Cannot Display this Mode message on my monitor. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine if I detach the monitor. Have tried with VGA, but to no avail. I have the latest and greatest Nvidia drivers downloaded from the Nvidia web site. Googling indicates that this is a Dell problem, however, I am not sure about this. It worked just fine on my previous laptop (IBM T61) and Ubuntu 9.10, so I guess it has to do with the laptop and not Ubuntu 10.04.

how to program in C or C++, but I'm pretty decent with python ( I've only used this on Windows ) and I was wondering if there was a way I can display my notifications like that as well. If you could just tell me what causes these messages to display like this I'm sure I could do some investigating of my own.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04. for a few emails I receive thunderbird does not display the message body (header is OK). The emails where this happens are always emails where the message is there both as text/plain and as text/html as alternative. If I view the source, everything is there. I have tried to choose View->Original HTML / Simple HTML / Plain Text, but none of them worked.

When you view mail in evolution in the vertical mode with the folders on the left, then the mail list in the middle and the message on the right, the mail list displays each message on two rows. But in thunderbird, the mail list is just in one row which means that much of the message header is not visible.
how to get thunderbird to display message lists using two rows per message?

LuckyBackup has a feature to allow issuing commands before it does the backup. I have been investigating scripts (I have never written one.), but do not understand how to use them to this end.

I recently got the problem that Thunderbird does not displays the messages anymore. The e-mails are downloaded form the server, a new email warning is given, but the e-mail cannot be displayed (in fact it is not loaded in the message window. I could only see the TB start page). I cannot even see the old messages.
However, when use "see message source" I can see the e-mails.
I also noticed this message in the error console:
server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555
I use Fedora 12 + thunderbird 3.0.6-1
On another linux box F9+ThB 2.0.0 I do not have that issue.
Today I upgraded to Fedora 13 + TB 3.1.1. This should be the latest one, but I still cannot see the message.
Also, on F13 I got another issue with Firefox 3.6.7. When I switch between the tabs, the tabs will turn black and will not get back to normal for 10-15 sec. It looks liek a random effect because often only part fo the page turns black. This issue appear in the windows of TB 3.1.1 since updated to F13.
My hardware is a Sony SR49 laptop with ATI mobility Radeon HD3470
Have Google chrome and this black page issue is not present. The same with Evolution mail, but I do not like it.

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:
Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda5
Disk /dev/sda5: 28.5 GB, 28566397440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3473 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -u /dev/sda5
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

F9 has been running great since it came out. I read that one should install F10 before F11 so I did install F10! Everything went great.
(1) Then I tried to install the F11 iso dvd. After the "anaconda started" message at the bottom of a blue screen, the screen went blank and occasionally the message would appear: "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d". Thinking the monitor had gone into power save, I hit many keys and moved the mouse to no avail.
I gave up! BTW I had checked all media CDs for errors.
(2) then working under F10, a little message appeared from the lower right of the screen asking if I wanted to upgrade to F11.
I accepted and again "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d" on a black screen after anaconda started on a blue screen. This time no ISO DVD F11. I've never seen such an error message in 11 years (off and on) of using Linux. HD Disk activity was showing on the disk activity light so I let it run all night and part of today. I hit a bunch of keys and moved the mouse and the blue screen returned saying all was done and restarting.
After restart, I seem to have F11 installed. I did a yum update and got some more F11 updates. On the grub screen, the only F11 kernel was the PAE kernel which I selected
and got:
Does F11 have any F11 kernels? BTW running >setup (hd0,0) under F10 grub ruined my XP prof OS on scsi 0 so I reloaded XP Prof from scratch.
Questions:
(1) what is this "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d"?
(2) Now I cannot boot to Fedora 11 and all the advice on how to reinstall grub has failed failed. Did a rescue and chroot /mnt/sysimage and the fdisk -l
Now XP Prof seems to be on /dev/sdc and Fedora on /dev/sdd. What do I do? In the meantime I have retreated to Fedora 10.

I have OpenSuse 11.3, with KDE4. a few days ago, after an upgrade, are presenting several flaws in the system configuration.
But I think the cause of all is that at startup, before showing up loginscreen display the message box

I gave CRTR Alt F1 to switch to text mode, and consult the file in that directory to verify the existence of the file and its permissions:

Kernel driver function was called via ioctl and returned success, but when I checked the kernel display buffer with dmesg the printk message was not there. Then when you do lsmod, the driver you were calling showed "used by zero". So it seems like the kernel driver was not accessed. In the kernel driver, I had many printk statements, but nothing printed in the buffer. if the driver get accessed and what could cause this?
