May 29, 2011I need to display a message before any login on a Linux box, either locally and for remote login via SSH. How can I achieve this? "issue" and "Banner" are the two concepts I need to use to provide a message for every user before they log into the system.

Jul 21, 2011I am trying to load up the NVidia driver in Fedora 15 and am stuck. After boot up the graphical login screen comes up fine but when I go to log in I get an error message and it asks me to try to login again. I need to be able to get into text mode so I can edit some files but I do not know how to do this other that starting in multi-uder mode by editing /etc/inittab (or in FC15, editing some links in /etc/systemd/system/). Is there a way to get to text mode from the graphical loginscreen or do I need to get a rescue disk and startup in rescue mode to change files?

Sep 1, 2009F9 has been running great since it came out. I read that one should install F10 before F11 so I did install F10! Everything went great.
(1) Then I tried to install the F11 iso dvd. After the "anaconda started" message at the bottom of a blue screen, the screen went blank and occasionally the message would appear: "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d". Thinking the monitor had gone into power save, I hit many keys and moved the mouse to no avail.
I gave up! BTW I had checked all media CDs for errors.
(2) then working under F10, a little message appeared from the lower right of the screen asking if I wanted to upgrade to F11.
I accepted and again "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d" on a black screen after anaconda started on a blue screen. This time no ISO DVD F11. I've never seen such an error message in 11 years (off and on) of using Linux. HD Disk activity was showing on the disk activity light so I let it run all night and part of today. I hit a bunch of keys and moved the mouse and the blue screen returned saying all was done and restarting.
After restart, I seem to have F11 installed. I did a yum update and got some more F11 updates. On the grub screen, the only F11 kernel was the PAE kernel which I selected

Does F11 have any F11 kernels? BTW running >setup (hd0,0) under F10 grub ruined my XP prof OS on scsi 0 so I reloaded XP Prof from scratch.
Questions:
(1) what is this "cannot display this mode 2:dvi-d"?
(2) Now I cannot boot to Fedora 11 and all the advice on how to reinstall grub has failed failed. Did a rescue and chroot /mnt/sysimage and the fdisk -l
Now XP Prof seems to be on /dev/sdc and Fedora on /dev/sdd. What do I do? In the meantime I have retreated to Fedora 10.
Ubuntu :: Get A Message To Flash Up On Screen Based On A List Of Messages In A Text File?
Oct 10, 2010i've been using some subliminal software on windows for a while now and have found it to be really good. It basically just flashes up a message on screen over the top of whatever is going on at that time but the message is only there for about 30 milli seconds
The message is not there long enough for your conscious mind to read it but the theory is that your subconscious mind will read it.It actually works really well. THe problem is that they dont package a linux version although they do have an OSX version, i'd really like this on ubuntu.
Tried it in wine and it installs but nothing happens after that. Alternatively perhaps somebody can tell me how you could get a message to flash up on screen based on a list of messages in a text file?

Apr 23, 2011i installed opensuse 11.4 on my laptop (Lenovo T60, Mobility Radeon X1400). It worked fine for some weeks, the first problem that I found was that libreoffice did not work. Calc crashed immediately (screen looked "destroyed", only the panel was really visible, but the system seemed to work so I could log out without alt+ctr+del), writer had the problem after opening some menu options. Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. After restarting, I cannot even log in anymore, the screen looks destroyed as with libreoffice. I created a new user, this works and this is from where I write.

May 5, 2010I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and at first, everything was just fine. This issue came about yesterday, as far as I know, while my screen was locked. The login screen now displays only half of the original login screen (left side) and the other half (right side) is an odd view of a black background with a white box in the center (see this mock up). Another note of interest is that the right side pans as I move the mouse around the screen, as if the right-side view were a second view port to the login screen without displaying it properly.
I am not able to log in whatsoever. An incorrect password results in the standard error message. A correct password results in a temporary black screen, as if to load to the desktop, but then redisplays the login screen as if I hadn't logged in at all. I'm not sure where to begin, as I cannot login to run any commands and the grub menu does not give options to start in safe mode--it just loads directly to the latest instance of Ubuntu.

Jan 2, 2011I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

OpenSUSE Install :: White Display After Login Screen
Dec 29, 2009This is the 2nd time this has happened. I installed 11.1 & 11.2 later. After the install I would get the login screen just fine and then when it starts running everything goes white. It is an issue with compiz and my graphics I assume. The interesting part is in opensuse 11.0 I had all compiz items not installed. When I installed 11.1 & 11.2 they reinstalled. For next time is there a way to not have these installed on the install? What I had to do was login in a different session other than Gnome. Then go into yast and remove compiz. Then logout and log back in with gnome and the white screen is gone.

Nov 3, 2010So, I just installed Fedora yesterday. I have been trying out different Linux distros and Fedora was next after Ubuntu and SuSE failed severely. So, I installed F14 yesterday and everything has been great... until I tried to set my JAVA_HOME variable. I followed the instructions here.
After editing $ vi ~/.bash_profile as the site instructs, I proceeded to log-out and log back in...except I can't log back in. I have repeatedly gotten the login screen, selected my account, and entered my password. When I enter my password incorrectly, it says 'Validation Error' and that is not what is occurring. The display goes black for a couple of seconds and I am redirected back to the log in screen.

Aug 22, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, using an nVidia graphics card. I have my TV hooked up to my computer and acting as a second monitor, using the Twinview option with the gpu. My monitor is set as the primary display, with the TV as secondary.
The problem I'm having is that when I turn my computer on, the main display is black, and all the load up information is output to the second display. Then, when I get to the log in screen, it is also on the second display.

Jun 10, 2011A friend of mine recently broke his laptop's screen. He knew I wanted to setup a small personal server so he gave it to me. I used an old monitor and wiped the HDD and installed Ubuntu. At the end I chose to upgrade the freshly installed OS. When I rebooted the computer after upgrading I couldn't get any images on the monitor. I tried to unplug/plug it several times but it doesn't work. I keep getting the "No signal" message on the screen.
Is there a way for me to somehow force the computer to use the secondary display? And if not is it possible to install and configure all the packages to run a VNC server on it without seeing anything?

Jul 2, 2010I tried installing 10.04 via Wubi on a friend's notebook and have hit problems with the display. The installation seemed to proceed OK (took ages to download / install - left it running overnight) until it came to boot to Ubuntu. The GRUB menu appears OK, but choosing Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with some icons at the bottom, which is displayed for a few seconds, then the (login?) screen just shows rolling display, like an out-of-tune analogue TV. I suspect that I need a graphics driver or something? The notebook is a logiQ notebook, with 128MB SiS Mirage-3 graphics.

Apr 12, 2011My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Sep 17, 2010I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Dec 22, 2008I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further.But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

M-W, Th-Fr, and Sat.The message argument does not work. I need a Gui warning message before the Pc kicks the user off.Zenity does not work directly with crontab, so I put it in a script:#!/bin/bash Zenity --warning --text "The library is closing in 10 minutes. This PC will automatically shutdown in 5 minutes. Please save your work now, to prevent data loss."
