I've had the problem that my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet seems very slow under gimp while booted into unity desktop. Doesn't seem to be a problem in other painting software like MyPaint and doesn't seem to be a problem when I log into ubuntu classic Gnome desktop rather than Unity.
View 1 RepliesI've had this odd, stubborn problem that seems to be related to the nouveau video driver and certain kernel builds: opening or saving full resolution jpeg image files using GIMP takes from 1-5 minutes and causes xorg CPU usage to reach almost 100%.This also occurs when using UFRaw to open Canon raw image files. The problem is not intermittent, it happens each time I open a file. Opening photos in the default image viewer works fine.This bug has vexed me on and off for the last couple of months, and seems to be triggered by a combination of kernel version and the Nouveau driver. I switched to Debian Squeeze from Ubuntu 10.04 because I was experiencing slow image open times in Ubuntu 10.04 (using the Nouveau driver).I did not experience the bug running Squeeze with the nv driver and kernel 2.6.32-3.
I did not have the bug running Squeeze with the nouveau driver and kernel 2.6.32-5 backported from Sid.I began experiencing the bug again after the Squeeze updates on June 14th (still running nouveau and kernel 2.6.32-5). I update daily so it's likely to be that day's updates which caused the bug to reappear.Just for grins, I installed the Liquorix kernel. The bug does not occur using kernel 2.6.34-0.dmz.10-liquorix-686 and the nouveau video driver.I have a Nvidia FX5500 video card. I prefer the nouveau driver to nv as my display seems to behave better. The Nvidia proprietary drivers are not an option because they produce X freezes when I am doing photo editing. The liquorix kernel seems to be working fine, but for long-term stability I'd rather be running a mainline Debian kernel.
After I click on the ubuntu icon in Ubuntu 11.04, it takes atleast 6 seconds to come up.Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.
When working in GIMP using a Wacom pen (which I do a lot), not all the lines I draw show up. Maybe every 1 in 5 lines, just don't show up, and it's like the brush outline freezes. This becomes pretty annoying when drawing, which is why I log in standard GNOME without effects when using GIMP.
There is a minor problem that I think may be related, and that is that sometimes when I open a windows in GIMP, such as the Save or Open dialog, I won't be able to click anything in it with my pen. I then need to click the canvas in the background, and after that everything works. It seems as though the brush is stuck on the canvas, which is similar to what happens when drawing. I've tried different compiz settings with vSync and others, but nothing that made this work. This also seems to only be a problem when using a Wacom pen, and not when using the mouse.
I m on ubuntu 10.04 and have a Trust tb 4200 tablet.. and having problems with my trust tablet runing on ubuntu.. i pluged in the tablet and to my amaze it started working right away until i pressed the pen on the tablet.. i cant seem to move the mouse curser anymore unless i touch the pen on the tablet. (wich acts as a click) so i thought that i may be missing the drivers.. i checked thes forum and there was a post to install the aptek drivers which i did (but still worked the same) and i found out thet there was no 10-aiptek.fdi (in "/etc/hal/fdi/policy/") so i created one and copied one from a post.. in [url]...3&postcount=50 but still cant move the courser without touching.. its like if it did no diference at all.. i also changed the values in the 10-aiptek.fdi with no changes.. the size of the tablet is just the size of the screen so i am using the full tablet.. and no buttons work...
I think the drivers are not workin.. in the synaptic it shows as intalled...

I have noticed they sell digital writing tablets that have the ability to show the pen strokes both on the tablet's display and on the computer's monitor at the same time, and I think they are called LCD digital tablets and they serve as both a second computer monitor AND a writing tablet combined in one, such as the Wacom Cintiq, and must be connected both by USB as well as with a VGA/DVI port, and you have the ability to open up a drawing application directly from the tablet such as Paint where you can draw or write on the tablet's display. And you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. Then you save the results to a JPEG file, for example.
But I do not want a digtal tablet quite as elaborate as that. I am looking for something similar to the credit card terminals used in stores where you can sign your name directly on the display after swiping your credit card, and you can see what you are writing as you write. Then your signature shows up on a paper receipt later. Do they make digital tablets like that for the home user, and if they do, would they have to hook up to the VGA/DVI port on your video card? What are they called and where can I get one?
I've searched several online stores but they do not say if you can see what you are writing on the tablet's display. I already have a Wacom tablet in Linux but you can not see what you are writing on the tablet. I have to keep looking up at my computer's monitor to see what I am writing and proficiency is reduced as a result. Omnipen OP-906 (ancient mid-90's device). It came with floppy with drivers for Windows 3.11 and old Mac Plugs into ttyS0 (com1. It has "tablet mode" and "mouse mode". It is meant to always start in "tablet mode", but if I give it a small power interruption (take out the AC plug from the wall halfway and quickly plug it back in), it sometimes kicks into "mouse mode". I installed unity on ubuntu 10.10. when it first starts there is no problem ... but when I hover over any window the mouse gets stuck or at least REALLY slow that I cant control it. (I noticed also the keyboard does the same) some sites I searched suggested to remove unity application package and some other pack .. but it did not help. I use ATI (propriety drivers) on a Toshiba Laptop intel core i3, 3GB ram note that I downloaded gnome3-shell to try it but the exact same thing happened as unity.

I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.
Previously on 10.10 "sudo update-grub" took 2-3 seconds.
I upgraded to 11.04 and it now takes 10 - 15 minutes.
Is unity generally much slower than GNOME?
I'm using an Ubuntu desktop box as a home server and I want to be able to stream videos across the network to my Android devices wirelessly, however a plain UPNP server will not do, I also want to be able to password protect the streaming server so that only I will be able to view the videos without anyone else in the network being able to see my personal video library, is there any way I can do something like that?The devices in question are a Google Nexus One running Android 2.3.3 and a Motorola Xoom running Android 3.0.1.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently purchased a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch tablet and have got it working with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) by following this post: [URL].
I am now trying to trap the actual data coming from the bamboo as I write with the pen and found some threads suggesting that if I do an xxd one of /dev/ttyS[0-4] I should be able to see output. However when I do a "sudo xxd /dev/ttyS0" the xxd command finishes straight away.
If I run the command "xxd /dev/input/mouse1" I can the data coming from the mouse movement so I am expecting to be able to see the same sort of thing coming from the wacom bamboo pen. Both the bamboo and the mouse are USB connected.
Does anyone know if the stream of data coming form the wacom bamboo should go to /dev/ttyS[0-4] or should I be looking elsewhere?
However when i logged into it, i noticed that the movements with the curser was extremely slow and happened with a delay, but this only happens when i have an window open, its fine when its just the desktop Same thing happened with Gnome-Shell i think it must be mutter because its fine with normal Ubuntu Is there any solution to this at all?

This happens on a system running 10.04 / 64-bit. As I seem to recall a recent gimp update (might be wrong), I checked a 32-bit 10.04 laptop and it does not show the behavior. For information: the 64-bit system has some additional stuff installed for image processing (ufraw and darktable) but I have been using this already for a while without issues. The other main change on this 64-bit system before I noticed the problem was the installation of a geforce 8400 video card including the 'nomodeset' option in grub and install of the latest driver from the nvidia website. verify that the gimp on a 64-bit system is still functioning.Further a 'repair' from within synaptic throws the following error

like the title says, after working in GIMP for, like, 5 minutes, my session suddenly closes and I have to login again. I have been looking a lot of time for a solution, but I've not seen anyone with this problem... does anyone of you have some kind of solution? I'm desperate. I really need to use it, and I don't want to use Wine+Photoshop, I don't like to rely on windows programs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been recently using the GIMP, transferring from adobe photoshop. and the truth is i have been pleasantly surprised with GIMP, especially when comparing prices from the two. Anyway the one thing i have not been able to do, that i assume is possible is make a brush that i am able to sketch with with my wacom tablet.
what i mean by this is in adobe i was able to create a brush that would react affectively to the pressure senstivity and i would get nice realistic looking sketches that looked like pencil sketches. when i barley pressed on my tablet i would be light and when i pressed hard i was able to get the black line needed. i have messed around with the pressure settings on the brushes but havent noticed any difference when i press hard on my tablet or barely press at all.
I've been searching for a while now and come up empty handed, but after some research on the history of digital camouflage and how it was created I was able to devise a simple method for creating at least a close approximation of the real thing.
Step 1: start with a picture of the "texture" you intend to use. it doesn't matter if it's a low resolution picture because you are going to intentionally pixelate it
Step 2: use the noise plugin "pick" and create some static in the picture. I've found that you can just set everything to maximum and apply the pick with good results.
Step 3: (optional) if you want this to be a repeating pattern, at this time apply the "make seamless" tool under Map plugins.
Step 4: Apply a pixel blur. dial it in just to where you start to see hard pixel edges forming. In most digital camo patterns, the pixels are taller than they are wide, about a 3:2 ratio
Step 5: Choose the number of colors you want in your camo pattern. Virtually all digital patterns are either three or four colors, but never any more than that. Change the image mode from RGB to 4 color indexed. Then you can change it back to RGB if you wish to change the colors in your camo.
you can play with the settings on each step to dial in something that looks proper. The proper scale for your camo is roughly 1/4" tall pixels. Try playing with different textures, or even non digital camo prints. In about two minutes we've just created both a woodland and a desert digital print that is close enough to pass for MARPAT using free software.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI decided not to use Photoshop in wine on my computer but to only use GIMP because I heard there is so many free plugins on the internet that makes it function almost exactly as Photoshop.I install plugins but then GIMP wont open at all.I did a complete fresh install of 10.04 because I was having this GIMP problem after installing gimpshop and installing Photoshop 7, I figured it was the Photoshop that caused the problem
So now with a complete fresh install GIMP still wont work with any plugins installed.is there something i need before I can add any plugins or whats going on?
I found a filter I like, and I need to apply it on a couple thousand photos, how can I apply this in gimp to all these photos without having to work them one by one?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI add layers and they don't show up and the controls at the bottom of the layers palette (add layer, bin, etc) are all blanked out and i can't select them. It's impossible to do anything with layers in GIMP as it is at the moment and i need to get it sorted. I have tried closing down the layers tab, restarting GIMP and then adding the tab again but i get the same result, a layers palette that won't respond or show any layers that i do add.

Recently, that menu seems to have disappeared, and i've had to use the actual zoom tool, which i find frustrating since i have to switch back and forth between tools.
