Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Live Cd Worked Flawlessly Install Hangs At Boot?

Oct 12, 2010

My live cd worked flawlessly.

After I installed it, is another story I chose to include the suggested .mp3 codec, and to install updates at the same time.

Cmos and hardware all inits fine, then I get several seconds of a cursor, followed by the nice "ubuntu" title with little orange squares under it.

Interestingly, the squares do not cycle until I hold down the power button.

Searching for "10.10 boot" somehow returned zero results. ??

Fedora Installation :: F13 Live CD Hangs During Boot ?

May 28, 2010

I currently dual-boot Windows Vista and Suse 11.2 on my Gateway desktop machine. I'd like to try out Fedora in a triple-boot situation.

My trouble is that the F13 Live CD hangs during boot. I've checked the hashes of the downloaded ISO files, and done burns on multiple media. During booting with the Live CD, my box hangs and I have to use the physical power button to turn off the box.

I've tried the 64-bit KDE spin (my preferred choice), the 64-bit GNOME version, and also the 32-bit KDE spin, and all of them hang at the same point. Removing the "quiet" boot option shows that it hangs after setting up my built-in card reader. When I installed Suse 10.3 on this same machine, I had to use the flags "acpi=off" and "brokenmodules=pata_it821x". Would the syntax be the same if I wanted to try with those boot options with the F13 Live CD?

Using the ISO files in VirtualBox inside my working Suse install works just fine.

Fedora Installation :: Live CD Hangs After Boot Choice?

Jan 1, 2010

I was using Ubuntu 9.10, until I got a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT). After I got that upgrade, Ubuntu no longer supported that card for some reason, so I decided to try Linux Mint since it was a close relative to Ubuntu. Still no support for the video card.

I've always wanted to try Fedora so I decided to grab the x86_64 live cd and burn it. I stick it into my disk drive and it boots where it shows me the options to "Boot" "Verify and Boot" "Boot from Hard Disk" and one other option.

I tried the Boot option, and after selecting that, everything stalls, and my display turns off (not the entire monitor, just the display). I tried Verify and Boot, and still no luck.

I have also tried the i686 live cd and the same issue. It can not be the way I am burning it, cause I've gotten other live cd's to work with the same method of burning. Is it that Fedora does not support the card?

I am trying to get the GNOME version up and running.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Install And Play WOW Flawlessly

Jun 8, 2010

I am an avid ubuntu fan, and have been using ubuntu since 8.something. However, I never figured out a way to run WOW from Ubuntu, so I switched to winblows 7. I had my hard drive partitioned with vista, and 7 on it. (it's a long story) I was waiting for my new Ubuntu 10.4 cd to come in the mail, but i grew impatient and installed it on my pc. When I did I was careful not to install it over my Windows 7 partition. Infact, it made a new partition and installed it. So then i had 7, Ubuntu, and vista on my laptop. I formatted the vista partition and now it's blank. My problem is, when i start my computer, Windows 7 is no long an option in my boot menu. WTF happened? and can i get it back? All the files are still there, the partition is still there, from what I understand the whole OS is still there, but it's not on the Boot menu. I'm kind of a noob to ubuntu, I'm familiar with terminal and such. but if something is a bit out of my grasp i'll let you know.if someone could walk me through how to install and play WOW on linux flawlessly, that would work too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lubuntu 10.10 Live USB Hangs After Boot Menu Option Selected

Dec 21, 2010

I have the same problem with an Ubuntu 10.04 live CD. Whenever I attempt to boot (Lu|U)buntu from a live CD/USB, on most computers. it works just fine. However, on two computers, the live media starts off just fine with the main menu (Try Ubuntu without installing, etc.), then, when I select any option except 'Boot from First Hard Disk', after a few seconds, the CD stops spinning or the USB loses power. I'm convinced it's not a problem from the media, since it works perfectly fine on some computers.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Worked On Live Discs But Not On Install.

Jun 21, 2011

I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a Toshiba Satellite laptop that used to have Vista installed on it. I've been trying out various Linux live discs (eventually choosing Ubuntu) for over a year now, and whenever I've been on a live disc, the laptop has been able to connect wirelessly to the internet and browse the web. I have a NETGEAR router and I have always been given the option in the upper right to connect to NETGEAR. Tonight, when I installed Ubuntu, I chose to wipe the hard drive completely (I backed up stuff already), and it asked me if I had an internet connection. I tried to connect to NETGEAR but it wouldn't work. This made me a little suspicious, but I chugged along with the installation anyway. Now that it's fully installed, when I go up to see the list of wireless connections, it doesn't give me any options; everything is greyed out. What do I do now? I just wiped an entire hard drive and can't use the internet.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Live CD Boot Hangs?

Oct 14, 2010

With Mythbuntu 10.10, the Live CD hands before it can fully boot the OS to a GUI. I'm running an IBM ThinkCentre (P4 2.6Ghz, 512mb RAM) with an NVidia 6200, and I'm using an HD LCD TV for the display.

I've tried to use nomodeset but that hasn't helped it boot. I've tried disabling dmraid also but I end up getting this error: 'General Failure Mounting File Systems'. I've had no such problems with the previous 3 versions of Mythbuntu. Although I didn't have this TV when I installed those ones... could that be the issue perhaps?

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot 11.04 Live CD - Hangs With Blinking

Aug 2, 2011

I can't boot 11.04 live CD anymore: when it starts booting the kernel it hangs with a blinking. I can reproduce it all the time now. The interesting thing is that I installed the system using the very same live CD that I can no longer boot. If I unplug the HDD, I can boot the live CD. I can boot 10.10 no problem, however (as well as a bunch of different distros). After booting it, if I choose restart from the menu, I can boot from my HDD no problem, but only once.

Fedora Installation :: F10 New Install - Hangs Up During Boot

Jan 19, 2009

I have just completed a dual boot installation of FC10. The install was done from CD's I downloaded from the Fedora website. The installation (seemed to have) went fine, and the machine still boots into XP if selected from the menu. The Fedora installation does not complete the boot process. I have three bars that move across the bottom of the screen, and the Fedora 10 graphic tuns white, and then the system hangs. I have let it sit at this screen for as long as 30 minutes. The screen will blank occasionally, but returns to the same place if I hit a key on the keyboard.

I have it installed on an old HP E800 netserver, running dual P3-866mHz processors, 2GB ram, a ATI Radeon 7000 video card, and three 36GB SCSI drives, non-raid. I know FC10 will run on this machine, as I have a friend running it on another E800 without any problems. This machine does have on-board video that is disabled only by plugging a different video card in (Phoenix BIOS).

Debian Installation :: Boot Hangs After Successful Fresh Install

Nov 24, 2015

System is hanging during boot after a successful fresh install via netinstall disk. Never makes it to any GUI or prompt. However, it does still respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL (not completely frozen).Default debian installation with one exception - KDE checkbox was checked for installation. Everything else was default, with "use full disk with GRUB" option chosen. The boot process appears to hang during the service starts. It appears that the start job for "Create Static De..." is not actually ever completing. I don't know how to troubleshoot that any further than I have.

This is running on hardware, it is not a virtual machine. 480GB SSD, i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD R9 390 (I dunno if this is the problem, but it seems a likely culprit). There are no other disks attached. I have verified successful memtest completions (0 failures) and hard disk is intact and working fine (I have swapped for another disk, and the same thing happens as well).

My skill level with Linux is relatively low. I have proficiency using it and programming for it, but not much in the way of troubleshooting/ installation/ drivers.

Here is an album of "screenshots" (phone photos) of the boot sequence in debug: URL....I tried booting straight to console by removing "quiet" from boot options and changing to "text", but it does not alter the outcome in any discernible way.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Upgrade Hangs On Install Restart At Starting Up

Jun 5, 2010

I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:

Code:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, memtest86+
Other operating systems:
Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)

If I select the top one, I get:
Code:
Starting up ...
with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.

Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wont Boot To Live Or Install?

Jun 25, 2010

I use Ubuntu at work on multiple machines. I have instaled one PC ok (although had a few issues with the errno5 install error. Took out some RAM, installed, put RAM back, works). Now trying to reinstall on my main PC and having some very weird issues. When I try to boot off the CD it boots, says there was a problem and takes me into the desktop session, but that session wont actually load up properly. I think its something to do with gnome messing up the activity applet etc. Sometimes I get a blank grey box in the middle that looks like a half loaded error, othertimes it actually loads and tells me 'The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet".'

Other times it asks me if I want to delete the applet or not, but clicking doesnt seem to do anything. mouse pointer works as normal but clicking anything doesntseem to do anything, or it seems to catch up 10 minutes laterBreifly managed to get into another TTY but then that locked up too after I tried 'killall gnome-panel'.I dont think the CD is the issue as the md5 checksum is correct, and my colleagues pc is on 10.04 using this CD. Please help, I dont want to be stuck on 9.10 forever

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Install - Or Any Other Based Distro - Just Hangs - Still Showing The Menu Of Boot Options

Mar 11, 2011

I bought a new NVidia Asus EN210 for my HTPC, but I can't get Ubuntu to install.

First I made a live USB disk of 10.10 with Unetbootin and when I choose the option of "try Ubuntu" it starts loading and then just hangs, still showing the menu of boot options. After this I tried Xubuntu on a USB disk. This one also starts loading but then just fails. I also tried XBMC Live. This one does show the Ubuntu 10.04 screen but then just shows a black screen.

After this I found a CD with Ubuntu 10.04, I think or it is 10.10, laying around in my room. I booted it and once I select an option from the install menu it starts to load, but then just gives a black screen with a flashing "-" sign.

The strange thing is, once I pop in the old video card, which is an ATI HD4350, my Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD on USB disk does work and it does get past the menu of boot options (in my second paragraph I describe how this isn't the case with Ubuntu 10.10 combined with my NVidia card).

cant get past that load screen. Ubuntu Installation :: Install Almost Worked But Screen Resolution Too High?

Dec 6, 2010

The installation went okay (to start with) on my newly formatted hard drive (after death of Windows XP), but I got an error about 3/4 of the way through. The system said something about starting the desktop to try to resolve or fault find the problem. So I now have a desktop with access to all the menu system. I am feeling my way around slowly getting used to the environment. I think there are bits missing from the install but with no frame of reference I cannot tell what exactly is wrong. One obvious problem is my Monitor screen resolution. In Monitor preferences it is set as 'unknown monitor'.

The detect monitor button does nothing and the resolution is set as 2048 x 1536 which is just too small to see properly on the screen. I am currently using zoom to increase within a window to use at all. I have tried opening a terminal and using the xrandr command which reports the following:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default

Fedora Installation :: Fresh Install Hangs On Boot / Black Screen Blinking Cursor

Aug 9, 2011

After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).

The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

Fedora Installation :: Live Installation Hangs Up At Initial Login?

Dec 2, 2010

I downloaded the .ISO for Fedora Core 14 Live, with the intention of installing it to my HDD.

I burn the .ISO with no reported problems.

I boot to the installation CD and can get to the point where it asks me to Login (a timer is also going down for Automated Login).

Once I click "Login", nothing else ever happens.

I can hear the disc spinning in the drive and it's trying to load something, but it never does.

I thought that maybe my older (2003) laptop might just be slow, so I allowed it to do whatever it seemed to be doing overnight while I slept.

Well, I woke up this morning and it was still doing the same exact thing with no results.

---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:51 PM ----------

Oh, and I intend to dual-boot. I have already made a partition using Norton Partition Magic. It's NTFS filesystem for now, but I figured the Fedora Installation would give me an option to use that partition anyway - NTFS or not (meaning, it would wipe the NTFS file system and use whatever it is that Fedora Core uses). Am I mistaken in assuming this?
