Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Wont Boot To Live Or Install?

Jun 25, 2010

I use Ubuntu at work on multiple machines. I have instaled one PC ok (although had a few issues with the errno5 install error. Took out some RAM, installed, put RAM back, works). Now trying to reinstall on my main PC and having some very weird issues. When I try to boot off the CD it boots, says there was a problem and takes me into the desktop session, but that session wont actually load up properly. I think its something to do with gnome messing up the activity applet etc. Sometimes I get a blank grey box in the middle that looks like a half loaded error, othertimes it actually loads and tells me 'The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet".'

Other times it asks me if I want to delete the applet or not, but clicking doesnt seem to do anything. mouse pointer works as normal but clicking anything doesntseem to do anything, or it seems to catch up 10 minutes laterBreifly managed to get into another TTY but then that locked up too after I tried 'killall gnome-panel'.I dont think the CD is the issue as the md5 checksum is correct, and my colleagues pc is on 10.04 using this CD. Please help, I dont want to be stuck on 9.10 forever

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Xubuntu On Usb But Boot From Live-cd?

Feb 20, 2010

The harddrive of an old laptop of mine recently died. Until I can replace it, I would like to use the xubuntu live-cd. However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.

Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Install/boot From Live Cd Or Flash Drive

Aug 17, 2010

I have made several live Cd's and img for my flash drive and tried to even preview Ubuntu before install, but nothing seems to be working. it makes it to the screen that says Ubuntu with the dots and the dots "cycle" then afew seconds later, weather cd or flash drive, everything just stops and my computer freezes. Tried nomodeset and everything i could find between here and google to no avail.

cant get past that load screen. Ive been lurking on the forum for days and finally got fed up enough to post this because im fresh and have no clue what im doing when it comes to this. all i know is i want something better than windows(lol) and Ubuntu seems like its right up my alley...user, my "skills" if you will, are better than most, but Linux.its like trying to reed Greek for me.Also, computer specs...Toshiba A505-S6025 4gb Memory Nvidia GeForce 310M (from what i read i will have trouble with this) Realtek RTL8191SE wlan (also will have problems with this)

EDIT: just ran live cd with virtual box and it started the demo of Ubuntu with no problem with no options(like nomodeset) checked off... apparently i think im doing something wrong when it comes to booting the other way...

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Video Fails On Boot - Install - Upgrade And Live CD

Jan 24, 2010

When I ran the distribution upgrade from 9.04 in update manager, my screen went blank on reboot and will not recover. Every time I reboot, screen goes blank. I cannot press CTRL-ALT F1 - F6 to gain access to text shells.

I tested booting from the 9.04 live CD and it works fine. So I downloaded the 9.10 live cd on another computer and booted it on the disabled system. Same exact problem on the live CD that I had upon installation: on boot screen goes black and cannot access text shells.

What can I do next to get out of this short of going back to 9.04, which has problems that I do not want to live with?

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Install Option On Boot Custom Usb Live?

Jul 15, 2010

I used Ubuntu customization kit to "build" my own Ubuntu. It works as a charm. Completely recommended.

I install that custom ubuntu 10.04 on a 2gb pendrive, using usb-creator-gtk and it worked also good.

The only thing is bodering me, is when I boot that pendrive, it appear a window asking if I want to install the OS or if I want to use it live.

How can I remove that window on boot?

I want to boot directly on desktop...that way will be perfect!

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Live Cd Worked Flawlessly Install Hangs At Boot?

Oct 12, 2010

My live cd worked flawlessly.

After I installed it, is another story I chose to include the suggested .mp3 codec, and to install updates at the same time.

Cmos and hardware all inits fine, then I get several seconds of a cursor, followed by the nice "ubuntu" title with little orange squares under it.

Interestingly, the squares do not cycle until I hold down the power button.

Searching for "10.10 boot" somehow returned zero results. ??

Fedora Installation :: Live KDE CD Install : How To Select Boot From /dev/hda4

Feb 28, 2009

I was able to install Fedora 10 from the Live KDE CD, however I can't boot it.

I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.

There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:

boot from hard disk:

Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?

P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot Live CD After Windows 7 Double Install (Busy Box Pops Up)?

Aug 27, 2010

I have two hard drives in my laptop, they are NOT raid configured. I installed 32-bit Ubuntu on the second HD, third partition: Sdb3. I then installed 64-bit Windows 7 on the same hard drive, first partition: Sdb1 (Sdb2 is formatted NTFSd willusedasstorage).Windows installed fine. Then I installed Windows in 32-bit on the first hard drive, first partion: Sda1. Sda2 will again be used as storage. When I boot up, Windows boot manager gives me the option of the two windows OS's to install (but not Ubuntu of course).I wanted to boot into the Live CD, where I would reinstall grub, assuming it would recognize my two Windows, and I could boot into any of the three OS's upon start-up.The Ubuntu Live CD, will act as though it is going to boot, bringing me up to the loading screen, then it cuts out to "busy box" and I am not sure what to do. Buys box is almost like a command prompt, but I don't understand the commands.

Fedora Installation :: Disk Boot Failure After Fresh Install From Live CD.12?

Feb 15, 2010

I've run the install to hard drive program three times over and each time I get "disk boot failure". I believe I've got Grub to install to the mbr but I am not sure.

System:
Barton 3200+ with 1GB of DDR1
Asus A7V333
High Point hard disk controller

other items

All the hard drives are hooked to the High Point controller. It recognizes all of them that have power hooked up and read/writes to them. Two have 98SE installs, the third is where I'm trying to install Fedora 12 to get away from some problems I'm having with 98SE.

The BIOS is set up to boot from the "SCSI device" which means it's booting from the High Point controller. The High Point lets me set a boot mark, which, when set to the Fedora drive, yields the disk boot failure no matter what I do to it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Live CD BOOT/INSTALL With HCL K38 Laptop

Mar 16, 2011

I am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.

Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.

I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.

I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.

How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD - PC Won't Boot From Any CD

Feb 17, 2010

I tried installing Ubuntu 9.10 on an older computer. I figured since it was not that powerful, I'd try running it from the Live CD to see if it was acceptably fast. Of course, I forgot that I had put in a pair of unformatted 40 GB hard drives, so the Live CD didn't like those because there were no file systems to access. So I figured I would just reboot and install it. One problem: my PC acted as if there were no CD in the drive. So I tried a Windows XP CD, but I got the same result.

I reset the configuration data in my BIOS and I set the drives up correctly in there, made sure the boot order was right, and all of that. I was wondering if anyone has experienced something like this before, and if there's anything I can do before I try replacing the CD-ROM drive with another one. Computer info: Gigabyte 7IXE4 mobo with Athlon 1.2 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 2x 40 GB Seagate Barracuda HDs, not sure what the video card is (I'll worry about that one when I get there)

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot From 9.10 Live CD

Feb 24, 2010

I had issues installing Ubunut 9.10 on my Asus UX50 laptop but it installed perfectly on my tower. When installing 9.10 on my laptop I would get the live disc menu to try or install etc. Whenever I installed I got a big black screen for long lengths of time (each time varied from 15 minutes to 5+ hours), then on occasion I would get the glowy white Ubuntu logo, then if I was lucky, I would get scrolling code. It would scroll and scroll then stop. After the code stopped I would get the nice little blinking curser. I can type all types of fun things at this black screen but nothing seems to work.

I have tried 4 different CDS to no avail, my tower had the OS installed by one of the same discs.

I am successfully running 9.04 on this laptop.

a command of : lspci
gives me
Quote:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07)

[Code].....

From what I understand, my nVidia card may be the issue. So I have tried to boot in safe graphics mode and this also does not work. Safe mode directly delivers me to my black screen with my blinking curser.

I have also checked my drivers and I have no proprietary drivers installed.

Since I have 9.04 installed successfully does any one think that upgrading from Upgrade Manager would be successful?

My notebook is an HP Envy 15 (Core i7 720QM, Intel DMI Host Bridge, PM55) I have 2 ISO files, Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 and Ubuntu lucid lynx 10.04, both have correct md5sums, i burned each on cd's and flash usb disks ( using unetbootin and lili usb tool ). However i never had a successful boot, i always reach : (initramfs): Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.

Bios of notebook has no settings to tweak regarding HDD Could this be a sata issue anyway ? I tried searching for this issue on the forums but all the posts were having burn problems, I also tried the flash usb disks on a desktop machine and they boot properly with no problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Do A Live Boot From CD

Dec 23, 2010

Two days ago Ubuntu crashed and I had to reformat my computer (I don't know what happened and I couldn't fix it). I'm running Window XP right now and am having trouble booting/installing several distros of linux.

I've tried Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Xbuntu, Puppylinux, and Fedora live CDs and continue to get the same thing.

When I boot, after the bios, I get a flashing "_". I don't get a boot and have to reboot and remove the CD.

I would like to get Xbuntu running as soon as possible.

EDIT: Also, In windows, when I go to my computer I cannot see the Live CDs. I don't know if this is related in some way.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Boot From Live Usb?

Feb 21, 2011

I've created a live usb with Startup Disk Creator on my desktop running Ubuntu 10.10. The live usb is Mint 10 (Julia). I wish to overwrite Ubuntu 10.04 running on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. The reason for this is that Mint requires fewer resources and is better suited for my laptop duties.

I have used the live usb solution for several installs and never had a problem. Following protocol, I shut down the laptop, inserted the live usb and restarted. Nadda.

I made sure that the USB is the 1st boot device in the BIOS.

Upon restart, a line comes up with this:

Code:
vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image

boot:
It just repeats itself every 10 seconds.

I'm using a Verbatim 8.0 GB usb.

Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Won't Start, Installation Won't Boot?

Oct 13, 2010

I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 2 days ago and tried to instal it on my:HP EliteBook 8540wIntel Core i7 740QMIntel QM57 Express8GB RAMnVidia Quadro FX 1800 with CUDA (1GB)Of course I went 64bit, but the Live CD wouldn't start. Instead I get some weird artifacts on my screen.I can see bits of my Windows-background with taskbar and some of the windows I was using earlier before restarting, like the download manager. If cold boot my PC I see black and white boxes with coloured dots on them.

Thus I thought of an issue with the 64bit architecture and possibly the grafics card too (the artifacts are clearly remnants of data from the VRAM)I tried the same with the 32bit version and got the same issue (indicating NO issue with 64bit, at least not directly). In the end, I installed Ubuntu from the alternate 64bit CD and now am stuck with a non-working installation of Ubuntu.I get some kind of error concerning pcieport (probably PCI Express). When I install Ubuntu on Virtualbox through Windows 7 however, I don't get any kind of issue (I'd still like to be able to run Ubuntu natively)Any idea on how to fix the problem?PS: I'm not very experienced with Linux, so if you ask me to go into console mode, please be detailed on what command I should input.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Live CD Won't Boot

Jul 30, 2010

I'm trying to boot the KDE 11.3 Live CD and it hangs during the boot. With splash=off I see

Code:
/etc/initscript: line 77: /etc/sysconfig/ulimit: Input/Output error then a bunch of different Id numbers, for example...

Code: INIT Id 4 respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes and finally a few lines starting with a number (for example [100.676357]) and ending with

Code: [100.676357] lost page write due to I/O error on loop 0 and then it just loops between the respawn and write errors, as far as I can tell.

My system has a 1.8Hz processor, 1G of RAM and an integrated nVidea GeForce 6150 card, and I'm dual booting sidux and XP. I've checksummed the ISO file. I tried first with a 1G USB drive (Transferring the ISO via dd as per the openSUSE instructions) and then with a CD (burned at the lowest speed). I also tried the CD on a Gateway laptop running just XP and got the same errors. Boot parameters I tried were noapic, pci=nomsi, acpi=off, with no difference.
