View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed a minimal version of Ubuntu 10.10 (with Openbox) over 10.04. Mainly everything's ok, but I have three problems:
1. When shutting down or rebooting, my speakers make a loud pop. Upon googling around, I found this topic on the Arch forums. Running
Code:
Before rebooting/shutting down works. I, however, would like to have this permanently fixed so I don't have to run these commands every time before rebooting/shutting down.
2. I can't install the ATi video card drivers. I downloaded the correct driver (10.9) from the ATi website and made sure I had the packages found here installed. I also made it executable by running
Code:
When I run the installer, using
Code:
I get this output:
Code:
3. When booting, I get a message saying something like "intel_ips can't find i915 symbols, so graphics turbo is disabled". When googling for this, I see this is a kernel related issue. Since I don't have any understandings of kernels, I thought this is a little too high up for me. What does it mean and how can I fix it, as it slows my boot down quite a bit?
I'm trying to install some wireless drivers, but apparently I don't have a /lib/modules/<kernel>/build directory, which is causing the Makefile to throw an error. Is there a specific place I should point the Makefile at?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSo far I've tried gOS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and SuZE. The result is the same: The live disk runs, opens up but the graphics are shoddy, sound doesn't work, everything is very slow, and in attempting to partition and install the os, it stays at "Resizing partitions 0%"I know Live disks are going to be a bit slower, but this is super slow and this computer is just a few months old. Usually the live cds have a database of drivers for common media but it just isn't accelerating the graphics or even recognizing my wireless. I know its not the CDs because they work fine on other (much older) computers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just started using Linux and am having troubles getting various drivers to work/install i've tried to install an nvidia 32bit linux graphics driver which fails once you right click it, display/run it and the progress bar gets to the end and just comes up red saying failed (can't remember what it exactly says)
i've also tried to install my pci wireless driver, the readme that came with it is very confusing, i tried to run the autorun.sh file, which doesnt seem to-do anything. i think i got somewhere by putting in code to the terminal which i got from the readme, but no luck.
Also is their a chipset driver i have to install? as with windows, when my comp starts all the fans come on at 100% then software throttles them once in windows, wheras with ubuntu their just 100% all the time.
i've tried looking for other threads to cure my problem with no luck. But did notice alot of people ask to see lspci results, here it is..

I think I should warn you about this: I am a total n00b, just came here from. well, win7, at the end.I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx), updating from 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) pretty much straight away.
What seems to be the problem now, after I've installed all the programs that interest me and, well, doing an 'aptitude update' and then an 'aptitude upgrade' that I was told to do, is that I don't seem to have my printer drivers and my sound card drivers installed. For one, it won't print when I tell it to from wherever I write something that I want to print, and the sound seems to work whenever it wants to, and will only work if I reboot whenever it decides not to. My printer is a Canon PIXMA iP1800 - which seems to be the only Canon one not in the list when I was asked what drivers to install.
My sound card is a Sound Blaster Audigy. The thing is, if I download the drivers from the relevant makers' websites, I have absolutely no idea what to do with them if I do. They just sit there, smile at me, and I smile back at them - and then delete them, as they don't seem to do anything of their own volition. You know, like in Windows, which my mom still runs.
I was trying to reinstall vista on my laptop and 7 in my desktop a few days ago, and I kid you not, both failed on installation. Being already annoyed as I just reinstalled at the start of this college semester, I popped in my roommates disc and here I am! Though I'm having a bit of trouble =) I have no sound!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI built a computer out of found parts and I decided to install Ubuntu as my goal is to use it as a media server (and learn about Linux). I have a few issues but my main one is drivers for an Ati 9200se. Should i install the drivers for it from [URL]... before I insert it into the motherboard? When I insert the card into the motherboard I get a black screen at start-up. However, when I was first installing Ubuntu I did it with the card installed. I made it part way through the install before it would freeze.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install the ATI Catalyst_11.1 proprietary driver for the past two days unsuccessfully.I've been using the instructions in this pdf from AMD's website, but it really hasn't done me any good. Despite the fact that the installation wizard says the install completed, nothing changes once I reboot.I read somewhere that it was possible to install it via the "Hardware Drivers" utility. Is that true? If so, how can I go about doing that.At the moment I've got the "ATI fire gl" driver activated, but playing videos in fullscreen is painfully slow and I'm hoping AMD's proprietary driver can help.btw, My system can run pretty much any video (HD or not) in fullscreen under Windows 7. I want the same to be true under Ubuntu.System Specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Socket 939)
Mobo: FC51GM (Foxconn WinFast 6100K8MA-RS)

1. When i play videos in yt in hd720p i get something like 420 and slowed down a lot...
2. When i go to Additional Drivers i dont see nothing there...
3. When i install fglrx from SPM i loose all my desktop effects and when i try to restore them it says desktop effects could not be restored. In the Catalyst Manager it says driver not found...
4. Aticonfig in terminal returns nothing but "command not found"
Is there any way to install the drivers? Is it problem of the driver? Should i leave it as it is and watch only in 320p?
I did alot of reading on installing nVIDIA Drivers So far, I did it through the Package Manager. But I got the older 260.* drivers. I downloaded the main drivers from nVIDIA Page. Ran the RUN file. I'm running an Giada PC with ION 9400 IGP. What do you people recommend the best way to install? Custom build? Which I don't know how to. I tried to get vdapu installed as well. But I still get Undefined Rendering in Flash Player. And Boxee plays videos cropped on the left hand side. Right now I have 270.40.16 drivers installed.

Same for other cds.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed Xubuntu a couple of days ago on my pc (Which means im really new to linux), i got xubuntu and windows XP on 1 desktop now. After the install and all updates were done i downloaded the binary version of Stepmania (Stepmania is a DDR like game available for mac, windows and linux). Link to the download: [url]
After i extracted the game i tried to run it, which failed. Nothing happened. The file was set as an executable but it still did not start. After a while it did start, no idea what i did though.
When i start stepmania now, you see the stepmania logo in the middle of the screen (which is normal) and then i get a black screen and after like 3 seconds the game brings me back to linux again. Only thing i get is a logfile with this information:
Code:
So i am currently not able to run stepmania (uses 3d stuff) and the standard chess game on ubuntu in 3d mode, so i thought it might be something with my drivers? When i go to applications - system - hardware drivers, it says there are no drivers installed (except for a broadcom wireless driver, which i don't need because im not on wireless internet)
So i tried to download the video card driver from intel. My graphics card is:
-Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller (128 mb)
So i downloaded the driver, extracted it and tried to run the install.sh. I was able to start the installation with the linux console screen, but after it started to install the driver i got an error:
Code:
I'm about to chuck my Ubuntu Dell Mini Laptop in the trash, have tried everything and read everything, but there seems no easy way to install the wireless drivers.
