View 3 RepliesI have three machines(2x Dell Optiplex GX620, 1x Dell Optiplex 330) and I salvaged a D-Link Ethernet card from another PC, and I want to put it in the Optiplex 330. I was wondering if there was something I needed to do before I take the server offline and install it and how do I find the drivers for it? Or does Ubuntu go ahead and do that?
And my second question is, once I get the network card installed, how do I share the internet connection of that machine with another server? And how would I SSH in to the server connected to the other? I'm guessing that I have to set up some ports to do that, but I don't know how as I am very new to the Ubuntu Server scene and I am doing this for educational purposes.
[URL].. One of my reference link: A very good place for search for drivers since many hardware manufacturers do not have a driver site for open source.

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
I just installed Fedora 13 and am having a minor issue with Firefox. Basically I can't search for add-ons and Personas won't install. Also the menu text is black on black.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi ve run into problems while installing 11.3 x64. Installer stops at search for linux partitions... to solve it i ve had to go back to 11.2. Anyway, i have installed 11.3 on another hdd (3hdds in raid 5 had to be disconnected). When i go into partitoner (11.3) and device graph, i see two of three raid hdds ok with sda1, sda2.... but the third one is without any partitions./ if i do the same in 11.2 all three hdds are with all partitions in that graph. Anyone know the solution except not installing 11.3? .)

View 1 Replies View RelatedAs I type this, I'm waiting (and waiting) (and waiting) for the Repair Tool Box, "Search For Lost Partitions" tool to stop running off of the install CD. I didn't actually mean to do that (I meant to select "repair file system!) and I don't see any way to abort it! How to I make it stop? (You can insert your best Deanna Troi voice there, if you like: "make it STOP!") Or do I just wait until sometime next week for this rascal to finish examining a THREE HUNDRED GIG partition, byte by byte . .. ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed a minimal version of Ubuntu 10.10 (with Openbox) over 10.04. Mainly everything's ok, but I have three problems:
1. When shutting down or rebooting, my speakers make a loud pop. Upon googling around, I found this topic on the Arch forums. Running
Code:
Before rebooting/shutting down works. I, however, would like to have this permanently fixed so I don't have to run these commands every time before rebooting/shutting down.
2. I can't install the ATi video card drivers. I downloaded the correct driver (10.9) from the ATi website and made sure I had the packages found here installed. I also made it executable by running
Code:
When I run the installer, using
Code:
I get this output:
Code:
3. When booting, I get a message saying something like "intel_ips can't find i915 symbols, so graphics turbo is disabled". When googling for this, I see this is a kernel related issue. Since I don't have any understandings of kernels, I thought this is a little too high up for me. What does it mean and how can I fix it, as it slows my boot down quite a bit?
for example we search a file for a certain keyword..is there any application available which will enable us to search for a single keyword in all the files within the folder ?i want to search for a keyword in about 1000 files..if i do it manually it will take loads of time..

View 9 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately far for all unicode characters can be displayed in Fedora by default, (much less than in M$ Wnd). There is a tool that aim to find and install missing fonts when an non-displayable character appears, but it starts mainly when I accidentally open non-text file in terminal and never when a web-page I open in Mozilla Firefox (or Konqueror) contains such kind of characters. So, I see a rectangle with hexadecimal number of character in it (or simply empty rectangle in case of Konqueror) and don't know if there is a easy way to see it by installing missing font automatically (or manually at last) for range of this character or a way to install complete font collection to display all unicode characters from all ranges.
View 2 Replies View Relatedwhen i login, Ubuntu asks to install 3D Drivers for my grapics card. Can i make a script in openSUSE to do this as well? Or even better, check for drivers on startup and then install the drivers for the graphics card on boot.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo far I've tried gOS, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and SuZE. The result is the same: The live disk runs, opens up but the graphics are shoddy, sound doesn't work, everything is very slow, and in attempting to partition and install the os, it stays at "Resizing partitions 0%"I know Live disks are going to be a bit slower, but this is super slow and this computer is just a few months old. Usually the live cds have a database of drivers for common media but it just isn't accelerating the graphics or even recognizing my wireless. I know its not the CDs because they work fine on other (much older) computers.

i've also tried to install my pci wireless driver, the readme that came with it is very confusing, i tried to run the autorun.sh file, which doesnt seem to-do anything. i think i got somewhere by putting in code to the terminal which i got from the readme, but no luck.
Also is their a chipset driver i have to install? as with windows, when my comp starts all the fans come on at 100% then software throttles them once in windows, wheras with ubuntu their just 100% all the time.
i've tried looking for other threads to cure my problem with no luck. But did notice alot of people ask to see lspci results, here it is..

I think I should warn you about this: I am a total n00b, just came here from. well, win7, at the end.I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx), updating from 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) pretty much straight away.
What seems to be the problem now, after I've installed all the programs that interest me and, well, doing an 'aptitude update' and then an 'aptitude upgrade' that I was told to do, is that I don't seem to have my printer drivers and my sound card drivers installed. For one, it won't print when I tell it to from wherever I write something that I want to print, and the sound seems to work whenever it wants to, and will only work if I reboot whenever it decides not to. My printer is a Canon PIXMA iP1800 - which seems to be the only Canon one not in the list when I was asked what drivers to install.
My sound card is a Sound Blaster Audigy. The thing is, if I download the drivers from the relevant makers' websites, I have absolutely no idea what to do with them if I do. They just sit there, smile at me, and I smile back at them - and then delete them, as they don't seem to do anything of their own volition. You know, like in Windows, which my mom still runs.
I was trying to reinstall vista on my laptop and 7 in my desktop a few days ago, and I kid you not, both failed on installation. Being already annoyed as I just reinstalled at the start of this college semester, I popped in my roommates disc and here I am! Though I'm having a bit of trouble =) I have no sound!
