Debian Installation :: All Packages Downloaded Gone - Use Package Downloaded?
Mar 1, 2010after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

Dec 14, 2010I am trying to install a brand new installation of Opensuse 11.3 on a PC. I am using the Gnome desktop. When installing I get SO many errors saying "YAST2: package "xxx" could not be downloaded" or "installation of package "xxx.rpm failed." Ignore, Abort Retry.
I ran a checksum on the iso I downloaded from this site and it checks out. What is going on?

May 19, 2010I had been having problems with Thunderbird 3, so decided to install 2.0.0.24. I carefully cleaned out all the 3.0 files. So I downloaded it. Opened it with tar and can see that there is now a Thunderbird folder with all inside of it. But how do I make it run?
If I use "whereis" to locate the file to make it run, it says it is in /etc but i sure can't see it. There is a thunderbird file that seems to be the one in the thunderbird folder, but double clicking and mark "run" does nothing.

Jan 23, 2011I am a newbie to Ubuntu. I have installed Ubuntu STudio 10.04 Lucid, and to install Open Office, I have chosen the below method:
1. Went to System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package manager.
2. Here, I chose Open Office Package and marked something, which I now dont remember.
3. Download of the associated packages have been completed, but it is not installed. Around 99 mb is downloaded, but I am not sure where it is saved.
The problem is that, it is not yet installed. After the download, it behaved like it was installing, I waited, but of no use. How to install the same and where the downloaded packages sit in the system?

I've looked through them all and no sign of Varkon. I've also tried to see if Varkon was installed so I looked via Ubuntu Software Center under installed software. No sign. Did a file search for Varkon.

Aug 27, 2010I have dowmloaded the latest version of Gnome Nanny, but have run into an instal problem at the first hurdle:
I have extracte the folder to Documents: Cd/ to the folder and run the ./configure command and get this message: No package 'pygtk-2.0' found
I have checked the install files and edited the lines which contain the above to now read pygtk -2.0 >=2.8 as 2.8 is the version of python I have installed. In package manager it only goes back to v2.2.
How I can get around this error?

Aug 2, 2011Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on an older Dell D610 laptop. Everything was running a little slow but all in all running fine except one thing - I downloaded the Chrome deb file and also the deb file from Moneydance. When I double-click on either of these deb files, it opens up the Ubuntu Software Center and shows an 'Install' button for the app. I click Install and then enter my root password, then nothing happens. A short while later the Install button turns from grayed out to clickable again. So I click it again, and it says that the deb file is not packaged correctly.
I've tried it with multiple deb files now and get the same thing. Installing directly through the Ubuntu Software Center works fine, but unortunately Chrome and Moneydance aren't in there (I prefer Chrome to Chromium). What could be causing this?
Also - due to the slowness of the Ubuntu install I did a clean install to Xubuntu and I like that much better and it is running perfectly except for this issue of not being able to install any 3rd-party downloaded apps.

Jul 10, 2010I am in the process of moving all my data from Windows to Ubuntu. So far everything has gone well and I am very impressed with Ubuntu and regret not doing this years ago.
One program is giving problems. It is a program called Sharescope and I pay a subscription for it and it runs in my Windows partition. I downloaded Wine and then downloaded Sharescope three times but when I click to install it comes up with the following message;

I contacted Sharescope and they said it was a permission issue in Ubuntu. Is there any way to install this program or will I have to work with it in Windows?

Aug 26, 2010Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?
I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..
