Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on an older Dell D610 laptop. Everything was running a little slow but all in all running fine except one thing - I downloaded the Chrome deb file and also the deb file from Moneydance. When I double-click on either of these deb files, it opens up the Ubuntu Software Center and shows an 'Install' button for the app. I click Install and then enter my root password, then nothing happens. A short while later the Install button turns from grayed out to clickable again. So I click it again, and it says that the deb file is not packaged correctly.
I've tried it with multiple deb files now and get the same thing. Installing directly through the Ubuntu Software Center works fine, but unortunately Chrome and Moneydance aren't in there (I prefer Chrome to Chromium). What could be causing this?
Also - due to the slowness of the Ubuntu install I did a clean install to Xubuntu and I like that much better and it is running perfectly except for this issue of not being able to install any 3rd-party downloaded apps.
I just switched to a faster isp with monthly usage limits. When I install a program using Synaptic, where are the install files stored? I'd like to save them for future use. Also, I'm downloading Conky right now to monitor usage.
"You'll probably want to operate from inside your home directory. If your user is (for example) username, your home directory will be /home/username/. For the rest of this section we will assume you have downloaded your zip file to /home/username/src. If you do not have a src directory, you can create it with the following "mkdir" (make directory) command:"
Where do the commands go? I cant make it work in terminal. How do I get back to "home" from where i am now? example /home/mydesktop/. I am working in mydesktop. I have downloaded some packages that pkcon search will not find, but when I try to install them using "synaptic" it cant find the packages i dl. So I found this tutorial.
"So, we have our source package in /home/username/src/. Change to the /home/username/src/ directory with the "cd" (change directory) command like so: cd /home/username/src/ but I dont know where to write the commands.
A game I found recently through an web repository. Downloaded the all neded dependencies and .rpm files, but cant install them.. terminal output below:'
I downloaded, through the torrent, the Pink Floyd's Live in Gdansk concert. It first downloaded as an ISO and when I unzipped I now have 5 CD folders with bin files in them. I've searched and followed many different instructions to open the bin files but nothing is working. How to be able to listen to the music?
I switched from 9.10 to 10.10. In 9.10 there was a folder where the temporary flv ..... video files were downloaded, so I could capture them before being deleted. Now with 10.10, which is the folder? /tmp isn't, I'm watching videos but no flashxxxxx files there.
Whenever I download a file using Firefox or Google Chrome and it has a ' character on it's filename, the file is renamed and a is added before the '. It's really annoying and I'd like to know how can I solve this issue.
So I downloaded a bunch of movies on Ubuntu, which work fine. They are on a shared drive, so when I look at them using Windows 7 they are displayed as a 'file' rather than an .avi
They can still be opened and played in VLC and play fine
I've downloaded 4 versions of Ubuntu and Kubuntu but I've had no success in making a CD. Downloading them at the same time should not have been the problem as I've done it before. This was done after a fresh install of 9.04 Jaunty I had a problem with previous installs I have of an upgraded lucid 10.04 Could several partitions cause a file corruption, I know I had a file problem with Ubuntu one across several partitions.
Does anyone know where the files downloaded from the Ubuntu One Music Store are stored? They are not in the Music folder or anywhere else in my home folder that I can determine, yet Rhythmbox sees them. I noticed that in the Rhythmbox preferences I can no longer specify one specific folder as a watch folder (it defaults back to "Multiple Locations Set"). I'd like to transfer the files I bought to a flash drive, but cannot find them.
Is there is any application to join files downloaded from rapidshare??Generally i use hjsplit to join these files in windows.. what application i have to use to join those files in ubuntu. They have an extension like 001,002,etc.
I'm looking for a script or a bittorrent client which is able to move a file after downloading and placing it in a specific folder depending on the file type. E.g. moving a newly downloaded movie to "Videos" and an ISO-file to "Files".
I feel as if i have used a client with this functionality before but can't remember the name.
Since I at the moment use Transmission as my bittorrent client a script would also work since Transmission can run it after finishing the download.
Is there a stand-alone SWF viewer I can use to view downloaded SWF files on Fedora please? I know there's a browser plugin, but it does not have any controls to pause or rewind the file - it just plays the SWF file from start to end. I've tried using Mplayer, but it does not appear to support playing SWF files.
file permissions and also about an error I'm getting in Virtualbox. I think the two issues are related. Recently, I replaced the hard drive in my computer and when I did, I decided to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and I'm loving the new version. However, I have one minor problem. Whenever I download files via firefox (or chrome, etc.), they're not initially executable. I have to chmod them before I can run them. This isn't a problem for most things and is, in fact, more secure, I suppose. However, it causes problems for some programs that automatically download files and then need to run them.
Namely, I tried installing Virtualbox guest additions on my XP guest and Virtualbox couldn't mount the iso after it had downloaded it. To clarify, I can use wget, download a file, and execute it just fine. If I download the same file via firefox, I have to chmod the file before I can execute it. Virtualbox also can't mount the guest additions iso after it downloads it, and I assume that it's again running into a permissions problem.
I'm thinking on trying Debian, I searched through their website and I went to the download site and I see there are 5 dvds torrent files? Which one should I download? I mean is debian that heavy that i need 5 dvds to get everything installed? By the way is there a kde version? I want kde.
I have a download cap therefore when I install Debian, I like to have a backup of all downloaded .deb files that I can install from rather than download all over again. From what I've read, it should be a simple case of copying the .deb files to /var/cache/apt/archives and then install using apt-get. But apt-get seems to 'ignore' them. Am I supposed to do something to get apt to use them? Bearing in mind, I need to do this from a console as there will be no DE.
I have ran into a permissions problem. It seems that any file I have created with Fedora I can browse to in Firefox. I cannot browse to files that I have downloaded from the internet or copied locally across our network. I changed file permissions to 755 and 777 for these files. I even thought that maybe it was the php file content that was causing the issue. So, I copied the file content from file 2 into file 1. File 1 was the file I could always browse to since I created it in Fedora. I could still browse to file 1 after it had file 2's content.
I look at the permissions and they appear the same for both files. I am not sure why I cannot open the other files. I downloaded phpMyAdmin. I cannot hit any of these files in a browser. I also copied some files from a a backup location we have internally. I cannot browse to any of these files either. I used chmod 777 filename. Even after doing that I could not hit any of the files. I moved the files into my document root directory ( /var/www/html ) and I still cannot browse to these files.
I download a file to my laptop desktop, it saves above and behind the panel menubar (Applications / Places / System). As such, the files aren't easily accessible. How might I ensure that downloaded files are visible on the screen and not 100px above & behind it? Perhaps related, I've got a second monitor attached to the laptop (primary). It seems this second monitor's resolution is affecting where downloaded files are put...out of sight.
I've tried all the settings in Monitor Preferences to no avail. Searched Google without luck. Currently on Ubuntu 10.10 and the system is (according to Update Manager) up-to-date.
I've a problem with some downloaded files with Transmission. I use Transmission for downloading torrent files since I have installed Hardy Heron. Everything was ok. Last week I downloaded 25 GiB of files (dance videos, music and so on....) in my external hd. On sunday I try to move some of them in a dvd. As always I open Brasero and I search for them in my external hd: nothing. They don't exist in the destination folder, the same in 2 years with ubuntu, that I called "incoming Transmission".
So, I made some checks: First: - in Transmission -> right click on one of the downloaded, bright green and "invisible" file -> details -> informations -> position -> /media/hdext/incoming Transmission Second: - in pc Resources -> search file -> name of the same file inside /media/hdext/incoming Transmission...... Here it is!!! Third: - in the folder tree I mark "view hidden files": nothing! they're invisible!!!
If I open directly the destination folder I can't see them! In these days I continue to download other files, and everything goes on right.
I started my computer and i goto home/downloads. i found all downloaded are deleted. and every folder and file in home folder are displayed in desktop.
I just upgraded from F12 to F13 and the result is a mess. From F11 to F12, I*used preupgrade and it worked flawlessly. This time, the process ended on a blank screen. So, I downloaded the DVD and I suppose the files downloaded by preupgarde were used as there were almost no connections to the net during the upgrade process. The problem now is that apparently almost all the FC12 files are still on my system:
Of course, as I said, the previous upgrade went flawlessly and I didn't check what happened on the system with the rpm and locate commands but I doubt is looked that bad. Seeing what kind of mess my system was turned into, I now worry about the next upgrade.
after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?
I downloaded Catalyst 9.3 and tried to install, but it doesn't want to install, sorry, but i can't paste you error message, because my laptop is far away from me now. I can do it tomorrow. May be it is just impossible to install ATI Catalyst 9,3 on lenny and i should try a lower version of Debian? Could u suggest me what to do? I searched over the net for a long period of time, but found nothing relevant to my problem.
I recently downloaded xubuntu 11.04. I run it live from USB it runs fine. Now i want to install it.
