Debian Installation :: All Packages Downloaded Gone - Use Package Downloaded?

Mar 1, 2010

after the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:

1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?

2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?

3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound In A Downloaded Game?

Nov 29, 2010

i have downloaded a game called YSFlight but there is no sound on it. I previously played this game on Windows so i know it does have sound. i HAVE installed "YSFlight for Linux" so i know that isn't the problem, and i have also checked all of the sound settings. Every other 'sound' that is with Ubuntu Linux works fine (music, video, error/notifications).

I am using Ubuntu Linux 10.10 with a Dell Inspiron 1525 which previously had Windows Vista Basic 32 bit. I have never had a sound problem with this laptop. Does anyone have any ideas of what is wrong? I am currently running Ubuntu Linux via a disk (the "Try It" option), to test programs that i like, and this is where i found the problem *

Feb 15, 2011

So I downloaded a bunch of movies on Ubuntu, which work fine. They are on a shared drive, so when I look at them using Windows 7 they are displayed as a 'file' rather than an .avi

They can still be opened and played in VLC and play fine

I'm trying to convert downloaded Flash videos to mp4. I first tried WinFF (a front-end to ffmpeg) and got an error message, so then I tried using ffmpeg directly in the terminal, only to get the same message. I remember doing this same thing in the past with no problems, so something must be wrong. I'm on Karmic 64 bit. The message I get is the following:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Downloaded Videos/movies (non-copyright)

Feb 22, 2010

I have been away from Linux in general and Ubuntu since 2006, but now wish to make Linux, and probably the Ubuntu distribution, my main operating system, especially for the Internet. I have been using Open Office since version 1.0, so no training or migration is necessary there. However, I have one challenge with my Ubuntu 9.1 ... movies which play under Windows will not play in Ubuntu. Under Windows Firefox needs Adobe Flash Player 10 to play these videos ... is there some open source software that will give Ubuntu Firefox the same capability?

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Downloaded DEB Files?

Aug 2, 2011

Just installed Ubuntu 11.04 32-bit on an older Dell D610 laptop. Everything was running a little slow but all in all running fine except one thing - I downloaded the Chrome deb file and also the deb file from Moneydance. When I double-click on either of these deb files, it opens up the Ubuntu Software Center and shows an 'Install' button for the app. I click Install and then enter my root password, then nothing happens. A short while later the Install button turns from grayed out to clickable again. So I click it again, and it says that the deb file is not packaged correctly.

I've tried it with multiple deb files now and get the same thing. Installing directly through the Ubuntu Software Center works fine, but unortunately Chrome and Moneydance aren't in there (I prefer Chrome to Chromium). What could be causing this?

Also - due to the slowness of the Ubuntu install I did a clean install to Xubuntu and I like that much better and it is running perfectly except for this issue of not being able to install any 3rd-party downloaded apps.

I am currently trying to install Personal Brain on my Ubuntu 11.04 and I came to realise I am Linux retarded. I got used to it for about a year, but for the most part I used the Ubuntu Software Center and Synaptic Package Manager to install software and learned to manage okay. Thing is, I have used the terminal, but I don't know any of the coding or commands to generally install software being straight up downloaded form the net.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install Downloaded Program

Jul 10, 2010

I am in the process of moving all my data from Windows to Ubuntu. So far everything has gone well and I am very impressed with Ubuntu and regret not doing this years ago.

One program is giving problems. It is a program called Sharescope and I pay a subscription for it and it runs in my Windows partition. I downloaded Wine and then downloaded Sharescope three times but when I click to install it comes up with the following message;

Archive: /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE
[/home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE]

End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE or /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE.zip, and cannot find /home/johnlaptop/Downloads/SSGoldFull(3).EXE.ZIP, period.

I contacted Sharescope and they said it was a permission issue in Ubuntu. Is there any way to install this program or will I have to work with it in Windows?

Fedora :: How To Install Downloaded Applications

Jun 16, 2011

It's a newbie question that has probably already been answered hundreds of times, but Google didn't help me.
How can I install an application I've downloaded from the internet?I know I can easily install software with the terminal (apt-get, yum etc.) and that there is also a package manager. But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?

I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..
