I have two disks from a old computer (now it doesn't exist anymore). They were in raid 1 with this configuration:

There is probably an error in one of the two disks, however raid 1 should allow we to restore data. So now I can physically mount this disks on a machine with ubuntu (ubuntu is on another disk). My question is: how can I restore data from disks? I think that using mdadm is not enough.
I would like to move a samba fileserver from ClearOS5 to Ubuntu. It has raid1 (software) and I would like to save one partition from it, md3. The other partitions could be used for Ubuntu. How would I go about this so that I don't erase data from md3 and is it even possible?
I have a ubuntu sever with a raid1 data drive formated in native linux ext3. I have searched for answers to my question but most likely I'm not asking it correctly. I want to use the data drive to store backups of files from various ubuntu and windows machines. Do I need to reformat the drive as ntfs to enable windows use or can it remain as ext3? For that matter can I reformat as ext4 as a soultion? Again, I wish to use the data drive as a backup storage.
We have had a hardisk crash in our RAID1 webhosting server running CentOS5 and Plesk. We first realized something was wrong when our main site didn't load but showed MySQL errors. We then found out that the system was in read-only state. Something that also happened the day before yesterday, but we could fix with a FSCK. Then the system worked well til around 18 hours later when it crashed with the same sympoms. So, we rebooted the server and wanted to do a filesystem check again. But the HDD wouldnt even load. It was gone. Unfortunatelly it was not realized that the second disk in the system was also not working any more for some time now. Fortunatelly we had our main site backed up externally though. So we could re-install a fresh box and mounted the two drives to the system. We checked the harddisk. One is practically empty (the older one), the other has almost only files in 'lost + found' but these are all "numbered", no real filenames or so.
Ive installed ubuntu for the first time today, i have a hdd of 500gb, that had 65gb occupied with music, movies and games.
What i did during installation:
it asked me where to install it, so i created a new partition of 100gb ext4 type, to install it there, and i was going to leave the rest for the data, but it wont let me do it, so i went back and selected the "exchange type swap linux 0x82 type" for the 400gb partition.
Then installed it, and now i cant find my data, and i have only 100gb of space in the hd, if i use the "disc utility" i can see the other 400gb, and change partition type, but i dont want to lose my data..
I've occasionally changed HDD filesystem type in Disk Utility from NTFS to Linux Extended . It created an extended partition containing some other partitions instead of NTFS.
I regularly take pgdumpall from production database and restore staging database. Production database size is 4.5 GB. After restoring the staging database size is incremented.
The following command is used to restore pgdumpall file.
psql -U postgres -f dbdumpall

I have just foolishly used live media to install F14. Pre-upgrade of F13 to 14 repeatedly failed. Sadly I used the use all available space option rather than the free space. As a result I have a working FC14 system but no data from my F13 installation. Is there any way to restore my f13 system and/or data?
I have three hard drives that were previously in a Debian server setup to use LVM that I now need to access data on. The first hard drive had a boot partition along with an LVM partition, the other two hard drives were also LVM.From what I remember I have to mount all three at once for LVM to function correctly but I don't have available hardware (particularly a motherboard that can mount all old IDE).Can I use a USB<->IDE converter to image the disks, and then mount them?What Linux distro should I set up to recover the data?ow do I know what version of LVM is needed?

I had i a dual boot win. 7 and ubuntu 9.10,recently i had some problem in my windows os so i restored the c drive to factory settings since both operating systems where in c drive so when i tried to boot grub was showing problem.the information displayed was loading grub, the file does not exist rescue grub> so what should i do to restore grub so that i can boot again into windows 7 and ubuntu without loosing my data.
This is to request assistance or information as to why the evolution application will not accept the evolution-backup-tar.gz file from a previous version.
Situation: I upgraded by way of a fresh install from openSuSE 11.2 to 11.3 (GNOME desktop). Before upgrading, I produced the above mentioned backup file so that I could import all the mail, addresses etc. into the new application.
Result: it does not work. The process starts up seemingly normal but then simply sits there forever with the message "evolution shuts down" - but it does'nt. I have to kill it to stop it.
I am looking forward to a resolution since it would be a real pity if I lost the mail history.
I was putting the cover back on my Antec p180b, and I guess it got stuck and gave it a hard bump (pretty much broke the cover). As a result, one of my hard drives, a Seagate Barracuda ST3750640AS, got messed up or something. All the other hard drives are fine. It's in an LVM with another hard drive, so now I can't boot up into my computer. So I booted into the installation CD:

This led me to believe the partition was messed up. So I ran cfdisk, and it said something about a missing partition table or something. Additionally, instead of showing the single partition on it, it displays, from my recollection, Pri*Log. To my knowledge, this is the only problem with the hard drive. So now I need to either somehow create or restore the partition table without overwriting the data. Or get a new hard drive, and some how recover the data (LVM, partitions, and all).
i'm wondering if it's possible to restore the original image file that you have hidden data in with steghide. The basic Idea is you have a photo using gpg sign it and then embed the signature. then remove the signature at a later time and check it with the signature. I hope another "inverse" algorithm doesn't need to be written to undo the first (if a "inverse algorithm is possible). This assume you already have the pass phrase or that there is no pass phrase. I already know how to retrieve the original file just want to remove the hidden data from the Image and restore it's attributes.

I currently have 3 500GB drives, 1 is my OS drive with Ubuntu 10.04, and the other two have been setup in a software RAID1 (mirror). I would like to resize my Ubuntu partition and install FreeBSD to try it out. How can I make sure that my software RAID1 is recognized and make sure no data is lost?
I am now preparing myself to upgrade lenny to squeeze and decided to do a backup on my system. I used backup-manager to do the job and it worked fine. how do you restore said backup data?

I'm building a NAS with xubuntu and I've put 2x1,5TB disks in RAID1 with mdadm. My question is really straightforward: do you have any advice for some special tuning/configuration for the RAID setup? Somewhere I read that I should disable disk caching, but I would like to have some more opinions.
I tried setting up my own partition table which apparently didn't go well.I have 1 compactflash-disk for linux and 2 hard drives for data which are set up for RAID1. But the RAID-drives doesn't get mounted.This is my first RAID-setup

intending to set up an all-in-one server, i threw in the ubuntu server 10.04 (amd64) cd. during the text-install, i set up the device-topology below, and it worked.

then i tested my raid by hot-pulling off the sda wire (ouch). worked fine, system still worked, and it also managed rebooting from the left sdb (which of course showed up being sda, lacking the first drive). now i am trying to recover this pre-crash state. adding the first disk (showing up as sdb), i can add it to md0 and let it start syncronizing for 2 hours. but... i can?t boot anymore with the recovered first disk being sda...
at first, booting got stuck in an initrd-prompt after complaining it couldn?t find my sys-logical volume. after a lot of trial and error i don?t even get any complaints, just a black screen which would let me wait for a boot for weeks... so, my system does not boot from my first disk, whether i plug in the second or not. my second disk still boots. my last attempt to get booting fine again has been: zero sda?s first and last gigabyte to kill any ids duplicate sdb?s first cylinder to sda to make it bootable reinitialize sdb?s part.table using command o in fdisk for a new disk-id recreate sda1 partition add sda1 to md0
I did a search and couldn't find anything pertaining to this - if I've missed something please direct me in the right direction We have an Ubuntu box set up as a headless office server (latest desktop install of Ubuntu) and we recently set up two 1TB HDDs in a RAID1 array using mdadm - as far as I can tell it worked successfully and created /dev/md0 with an ext3 file system. After sharing the drive I can see it from the other office computers and could transfer data to and from the RAID array just fine.
I didn't figure out how to get it to automatically mount on boot so I restarted it to see if it would do so by default - however, when I restarted I couldn't see the RAID array any longer on the desktop and it came up as a 0.0kb RAID array in Disk Utility, saying it was broken. It wouldn't let me check it until I stopped and restarted the array.
After restarting I hit "check array" and it appears to be repairing the drives. What have I missed? What happened here? How can I fix it? What other info can I provide to assist:
I recently set up an old desktop computer on my home network for use as a file server. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server on it and I'm slowly learning how to make it do what I want (I'm used to the GUI, so this is a bit of a jump for me).My plans are to put two 1.5TB hard drives in the computer (there's already a 160GB with the OS installed) and put them in a RAID1 configuration. This, as I understand it, will write all data to both drives, creating two identical drives. I'll only have 1.5TB total space for backup, but if one of the hard drives die, I can replace it without losing any data.
Hopefully I understand all that correctly. Now, my questions are how to actually set a RAID configuration up. I don't have a controller or anything, assuming I could do it off the two SATA ports in the motherboard (the 160GB is IDE) in software RAID.Once I have the two hard drives set up in RAID1, how do I allow the house to access the file storage?We're all on Windows 7 computers.If one of the hard drives fail, how will I know? Can I set it up so I receive some sort of notification? Also, how does the replacement process work; can I just pop the broken drive out and put a similar one in? I just installed Ubuntu server edition to my computer (brand new, no OS) and finished installation. In the terminal I used apt-get ubuntu-desktop to install a desktop interface.In my rig, I have two 500GB HDDs. I set them up through my computer BIOS as RAID1 drives, yet as I understand I still need to configure the Ubuntu software raid for it to work correctly. Unfortunately, I already partitioned my drives! I used the easy way (guided with LVM or whatever) and let it do it for me. Now, RAID1 is very important to me! Is there anyway to repartition the disks to use RAID1, or do I need to wipe my computer and reinstall Ubuntu?
